As a long time player and fan, I will say that missed/bad calls have always been a part of the game. As can be seen from the comments about 1966 (England's Phantom Goal) and everyone's hatred of Maradona ('86 Hand of God) controversy about bad calls has been around a long time, and they are not easily forgotten. However, this WC has had many more messed up calls than I can ever recall.

Part of this I think is due to the speed of the game now. Players are getting better and better, and the pace of many games are much faster now. Granted, Refs are in great shape and have to pass incredibly tough physicals, but there is no way in hell they can keep up with the top athletes from around the world. Also, many of the refs are from countries where they just don't officiate games of this caliber. A ref who is use to calling games in La Liga, Serie A, Premier league, etc., will do a much better job than a lot of what we've seen this WC.

At least UEFA is testing some new ideas. In Europa league games this past year they added 2 more assistants, one behind each goal. This will be expanded to Champions league this year.

UEFA has also done well in the past decade on encouraging assistants to be more involved calling fouls, but I personally feel more emphasis needs to be put on the ref and assistants communicating on deciding dives vs. fouls, and just as important when no-calls are appropriate.

But as we've seen this WC, FIFA needs to join the 21st century and make some changes.

I don't quite understand at what point a player is offsides. I mean, I know what the rule states, but when exactly can an offensive player go beyond the last defensive player? Does the ball that's passed have to come equal with him upfield or is it okay to run beyond the defense so long as the ball is en route, that is, not currently possessed farther back downfield?

That long pass Argentina had a few minutes ago; the Argentina player leaked out beyond the defense while the ball was in the air but before it was even with him. Help me out, hardcore soccer fans.

It is determined by the position of the player at the moment the ball is kicked.
