EDIT: In general, it tests a team in some manner because of the composure it takes under pressure after a long game.

PK match is more about psychology in term of skills and reaction. The result just only shows the Japan GK is not too familiar with the PK match.

Yeah I think Kamano was a bad choice, if you are going to use a D fine, but you know maybe one who has actually scored and proven themselves under pressure. Personally, Tulio, because he has been BA the whole tournament, and he was born in Brazil (slightly jk).

I don't mind them. They definitely are exciting. The ball is kinda close yes, but good keeps have a pretty good chance of predicting the shot.

Honda was so damn calm and clutch in that situation, I really like this guy after watching him these last few games. Japan definitely represented well in this tournament.

Nothing wrong with the overtime format for the world cup, 90 + 30 additional minutes is a fair amount of time, if the shit is still tied you just gotta say enough. Field is too big and scoring is too difficult to keep on playing like in hockey, basketball, etc. Plus with limited subs it makes it really impossible to keep on going and have any kind of decent competition on the field. Now if they increased the number of subs if there is OT or something...maybe, but meh. No complaints with PKs.

PKs are a necessary evil. Game could last forever if it was any harder to score on net.

Honda is impressive because he is high profile for Japan and actually plays at the tournament. Versus let's say Ronaldo who just stares around blankly unless he gets the ball with a scoring chance at which point he screws up unless its against possibly the most backwards country in the world.

I just don't see why they don't just move the ball back a little bit - gives the goalie a chance to react and save crappy strikes, while good ones still go in. Something seems wrong to me when it's a viable strategy to wait until the goalie moves one way and then kick it.

And before another person says "the game will go on forever without PKs" - I agree, my point is PKs are too close and it takes a lot of skill out of the equation.

More than one PK has been re-taken because players try to "fake" the goalie by running up and then stopping before taking the kick. It's considered unsportsmanlike conduct. Mind you it's at the ref's discretion.

Not that long ago goalies didn't even get the lateral movement on the line.

I just hate how random PK results can be, but they're a necessary evil.

The pressure is really high, else there won't be why Baggio miss PK in 94WC final vs Brazil, Beckham miss the free kick and send england home during 98 and etc.

Usually the coach arrange the kickers by regarding their performance during the penalty kick practice. The main issue during the PK is not how fast the GK can react to your shot, but is how do you able to trick the GK to jump to the opposite direction that you want to shot. And this apply from the GK perspective too.

Why is it not considered to add another official or 2 to the crew to help alleviate some of these terribly bad calls? I would imagine that would ease some of the stress associated with refs needing to be in the proper position to issue calls.
