Big name players have been a huge disappointment this world cup so far.

Ronaldo, Rooney, Messi, Torres, etc.

In fact the overall quality of play has been low, sure they are only national teams but seriously, theres Sunday league teams with more flair than some of the last 16.

Deffinitely calling Argentina for the overall win, but its been a letdown of a world cup regardless so far.

The Technology debate is a no-brainer, at the very very least they need to give refs some sort of instant notification of when the ball has crossed the line, I'd personally prefer to see the same system as Rugby also to challenge contentious decisions a couple of times per team per game.

Probably because Ricardo Costa, Coentrao, Tiago and Danny didn't play like Ramos, Kaka, Benzema and Higuain. One man is one man, and you are playing against one of the worlds strongest teams.

I think the amount of expectation is just too paralyzing. Like others have mentioned, all the players that are expected to perform have been disappointing so far.

A World Class GK like Casillas, one of the best right backs of the world, rock solid defense like Pique/Puyol, a state-of-the-art midfield like Xavi, Alonso, Iniesta and Fabregas and two of the best forwards in the world, Villa and Torres.

They are also on fire, won the most recent competition, EURO 2008 (by defeating Germany who were able to reach there with a last minute goal after a terrible semi-final performance).

Do you hardcore soccer fans like PKs? As someone who only watches during the World Cup, and just watched the end of Paraguay/Japan, I think they are fundamentally retarded.

Why put the shit so close? Why have a match come down to either (A)The guy kicking fucking up and missing the goal or (B)The goalie getting lucky and diving to the exact area the ball is kicked. They should move it back so the guy kicking has to actually come up with a solid strike, and the goalie has a chance to actually use his reflexes and athleticism to react to the ball, rather than having to dive before the ball is even struck to have a chance at a save.

Watching that dumb finish to a game inspired me to rant and I'm curious what others think about PKs.

I'm not a fan, but there has to be a way.

I just don't see why they don't just move the ball back a little bit - gives the goalie a chance to react and save crappy strikes, while good ones still go in. Something seems wrong to me when it's a viable strategy to wait until the goalie moves one way and then kick it.

And before another person says "the game will go on forever without PKs" - I agree, my point is PKs are too close and it takes a lot of skill out of the equation.

The problem is that if it gets much farther at all, the advantage switches to the goalie, who doesn't have the concern of missing the net entirely like the kicker does.

The reason you see so many goals from the 18 or outside is that there's so much in the way the keepers don't see the ball until it's too late. If you take everything out from in between on 90% of the midrange goals in this world cup, the keeper is going to have no problem stopping them.

Basically there's not like a sweet spot, it goes rather suddenly from kicker's advantage to goalie's advantage, and since the kicker has to worry about missing completely, the rules keep the advantage on his side.

if I were to say Brazil > Spain > Argentina in terms of best teams left.. would I be right or wrong? I ask ye olde football/soccer fans who actually know something about this sport.

Fully? Nope, any part of head (players with big nose are unlucky here), feet and body. Arms don't count.

EDIT: Afaik, penis is also included here so if you've got a big wang you've got disadvantage.
