Maybe its just me, but I have much more issue with a goal being called off on a bad offsides call versus a goal being allowed on an offsides no-call (like the US's goal being taken away in the Slovenia & Algeria games to me is worse than the above situation of a guy getting away with being ever so slightly offsides).

If the person was offsides, the defense more than likely did exactly what they meant to do, not a fuckup in the least.

If it had been a beautifully executed trap, defenders would have raised their hand just as the last guy made the pass, and would have been all over the referees if they didnt call it. Iirc, none of that happened, so it looks like it wasnt an example of an absolutely perfect and beautifully executed trap but rather a defensive fuck up as Zoolander said.

Then again, I was too busy screaming and spitting beer while running around my house, so I might have missed those raised hands and complains, if there were any.

EDIT: Upon watching the replay, some of the defenders are actually raising their hands. They dont look convinced, and its not the ones that should be watching Villa but rather the ones that cant help avoid the goal but by trying to make it null. Still, doesnt mean a lot considering all teams do this no matter if the player was clearly offside or onside... and to be honest, it was a fairly close call.

They defended Villa there by trapping him, the entire point of a trap is literally to get him behind the defense, of course he's past them...

Of course he is past them. The thing I said is the ones to the back, the ones that should be watching where they are standing, dont raise their hands so it seems aparent it was a fuck up. The ones that raise their hands are actually forward of the last defensive line and half of them are not even watching where the last guy of theirs is standing. If you know what I am saying.

All I can say is watch more closely, at least 2 people with their hands raised are directly involved in the trap, one stepping up early and one literally being the guy that executed the trap from closest to Villa.

I just dont see them convinced at all, and the fact the guy in the last line seems lost doesnt help their case. I am biased though so you are probably right, just dont see the complains you would usually see if they were convinced they made the trap right.

Can we at least agree it was fairly close, and furthermore, well deserved goal?

Sure, it was a fantastic goal by a scorer that's giving a new meaning to "scary good" in this world cup.

But it was also a perfect trap executed by one of the best defensive teams in the history of soccer, no less immaculately than the goal scored.


It's also great evidence against replay... even some Portuguese fans would probably rather have that goal counted than the game stopped for the 10 minutes it would have taken to judge that replay with absolute certainty.

Even from a neutral standpoint, it would take maybe 30 seconds for that call to be made, by which point the game wouldn't have even kicked off again. The replays on the BBC have the animations like the one in the picture above up in maybe 20 seconds, then 10 seconds to see if any part of matey boy being offside. 3 people review, needs at least 2 people to agree with whatever decision is made. I JUST FIXED FOOTBALL.
