Commentary here in Portugal is turning crazy pessimistic. We're playing too safe, not risking enough, plays aren't coming to fruition, if the first pass doesn't fail, the second always does, basically that sort of thing.

I think Portugal's playing alright. Coentrao is cutting balls fantastic and Ronaldo's still Ronaldo, despite that stupid yellow card. The centre's not all there though, Deco in particular isn't generating opportunities as he should.

2006 World Cup qualifying stage controversy

In March 2005, Korea DPR entered a match with Iran with limited chances of qualifying for the World Cup finals due to poor performance in early fixtures. During the match hosted in Pyongyang, North Korean fans became enraged when the referee failed to award Korea DPR with a penalty kick after a controversial play near the end of the match. Demanding a penalty, they rushed Syrian referee Mohamed Kousa, who instead gave a North Korean player a red card. Bottles, stones and chairs were thrown on to the field following the play.

After the match was over, North Korean fans refused to let the Iranian team leave the stadium on their team bus. The violence was so severe that riot police were forced to step in to force back the crowd. Following this incident, Korea DPR lost its right to host the subsequent home match with Japan and the game was instead played behind closed doors to an empty stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Fuck yeh there better be drama tonight lol! Although much of that drama above was possible because it took place in their own country but still...

In hindsight, they may do better than anticipated, since they reached the quarter finals in 1966, but lolhistory, I sound like English media now... (an occuring thing during each world cup where they talk about stuff that's happened so long ago).

With the exception of the German vs Australia game, all the matches have been a disappointment in terms of goals since most teams are too readily to play defense as soon as they score no matter how slim of their lead. Yesterday Japan was a hair away from losing its one goal lead in the final 5 mins because it went all defense after an early goal. While I don't generally gauge the excitement of a game based on the number of goals, but it would be hard pressed to say that a scoreless game would any more interesting.

This game was worth watching... CIV slightly dominated Portugal, but too many shitty cross or pass with no players (that Drogba action in the last minutes is the perfect exemple.)

Now to see who will beat or tie Brazil.

Brazil is gonna totally own this group. Portugal/Ivory Coast, while decent, are seriously overhyped, and North Korea is North Korea. While down here we preach the whole "respect your opponent" deal, down inside everyone knows what's up. They have one ok player who wouldn't even have space on the Brazil bench, and their main source of motivation is something that happened 44 years ago. Not happening.

Ivory Coast looked sharp the last few minutes or so, bad luck to Drogba mis-judging that chance and putting it across the box for no one when he could've had a shot. Still have no idea on who is gonna get 2nd place in that group.
