There was a post a while back that Google was given preference to students who wanted it. Not sure if its still going on. But I <3<3<3 that I can txt via my GV number on my Android phone as well as use it to make calls when I'm on Wifi. Also, its linked to my Skype account so using it when I was abroad was a money saver as well.

I'm going to wait 2 more days for my invite, after which point I may ask for an invite. Not going to ask for one now and take someones chance if I do indeed get one.

You can link all your phone numbers to your google number, so that if anyone calls the google number, it will ring all your phones. And if people start using your google number, you can do call screening, call monitoring and call recording. Best part is if anything asks you for your phone number that you think will be used by telemarketers, you can block certain numbers from calling you. And I think (not 100% sure on this) if enough people using Google Voice report a certain number as being spam and block it, it will automatically block it for you, like an email spam filter.

You can also set certain phones to only ring at certain times and you can sort your contacts in to groups.

For example, I can set my home phone to only ring from 9am to 9pm, any calls before 9am or after 9pm will go straight to google voicemail. But then, I can also set it that any contacts in my "Family" group that try to call me will ring at all times, ignoring the 9am to 9pm thing. Can also use it for your work phone, and set it to ring your work phone only at your working times (like say, 9am to 5pm).

So yeah, it is pretty fucking handy. At least you used to be able to do all the above shit, I haven't checked settings for a long time and they might have changed it now.

Also, other shit that i'm not taking the time to describe. Google it please.
Also, learn how to fucking quote before you start being an unprovoked dick for no fucking reason, Rich was merely asking a question. You're acting like GVoice is something fucking sacred or some shit lol.

@ Rich, besides the texting bullshit you can choose an alternate phone number (either in your area or from anywhere in the US) and not only link it to your phone, but you can GIVE people that alternate telno and if they dial it it can either come to your home phone or to your cell phone. I know you like going out and have a stable of Florida's finest dimes and what not, so this could potentially be something useful if you dont want to give out your direct direct number.

You can also set it so that it accepts calls during certain hours, set away messages or completely block or allow numbers to be passed through depending on whom you want to talk to. It does much more than the texting bullshit that was mentioned, its really cool and customizable. If you want or need one Rich, let me know You know how to get at me.

I use Google Voice for my personal business needs. Instead of using my cell phone number, Ill give people my GVoice number, and all calls, voice mails, and texts that go through that number, go straight to my phone. I can then reply from my phone with the GVoice number still being shown to them.

    All for free.

This sounds awesome, if anyone has an invite I'd love one. PM me for my email :D

Edit- I'm curious, what's to stop people from canceling their phone service and just using Google Voice? Do you need anything besides a phone for Google Voice to work? I'm assuming you need to have a service plan with one of the carriers like AT&t/Sprint etc.

Google isn't a phone service provider (at least not yet) all it is is a service that ties your phone number with their service. If the people know your ACTUAL phone number, they can still call it to get directly to the phone without going through the google number, but you won't get all the google services with it.

One really handy thing that I have at least, is that I use the cheapest phone option (only local calls are free, long distance costs per minute) its like $10 a month. With google voice I can make as many long distance calls as I want, going through googles service.

Google Voice is free (but like I said it isn't a phone provider so you can't make calls without some sort of phone service) BUT, you can send free SMS with google voice as much as you want and can receive them through google voice also and read the texts/listen to voicemail from their website.

EDIT: I'm just using verizons basic phone service, it's like $10 and only local calls are free. When you sign up for google voice you get to choose/make your own number, if you only have local calls free, make sure you choose a number within your local area so you don't get charged to access your google voice number.
