(Contra) Hard Corps: Uprising (PSN, XBLA)

Sequel(Prequel) to Contra: Hard Corps, naturally a run n' gun. Hard Corps from what I hear is the best Contra(US version, anyway), though I still haven't played it yet. The game does not feature the Contra name. Only two playable characters, down from four. Will no doubt be better than Contra 4.

It is being developed by Arc System Works, famous for their Guilty Gear series and other fighters(HnK, BB, etc). Also note the anime-style graphics.

There are "arcade" and "rising" modes. Arcade has you die with one bullet, while Rising is the noob-friendly mode which gives you 3 hits. I hope they balance the game around the arcade mode.

    No wikipedia page up yet.

Personally the game I am most excited about.

EDIT: And for no particular reason, here is Ark System Work's official site. It is cute. http://www.arcsystemworks.com/

Nice to see they kept some original fx's from the 1st Contra. Also the 1st level main boss remake was a nice touch.

    Bullet reflecting and air dashing?!?!

I haven't play Contra since Super C, is 4 really that bad? >.<

This one looks cool, but I'll probably wait for a price drop since I won't have anyone to play it with.

Contra 4 was fine. Really all Contra games that stuck to side scrolling have been good. Whenever they branched out and tried to diversify the series (meaning any Contra on a PlayStation outside of Shattered Soldier) is when shit went downhill. Contra Force doesn't count though.

I love the Contra series even though sadly it peaked with Contra III & Hard Corps and has never hit that mark again. Still makes for excellent nostalgia though.

As much of a fan of Contra I am, I seriously cannot take it serious animated like that. When I think of badass and Contra, Japanime is the furthest thing from my mind.

Luckily, Contra is all about the gameplay, and that boss battle got me hyped, so I might be able to look past it.

Yeah it looks visually incredible. It doesn't look like a Contra game from what's been presented to us thus far.

This is especially true of the anime intro, shit looks nothing like Contra but eh, it still looks interesting enough.

At least it is a spin-off game which doesn't have the Contra name in its title.

Going to wait a bit until I buy it. Too much on my plate right now. But I am hyped for it. I might get it for 360.

    http://www.ztgd.com/reviews/6089/hard-corps-uprising/

“Punishing” is the word I would use to best describe my experience with Hard Corps: Uprising. For most of my time spent with the game, I was constantly led back to a distant checkpoint to be ridiculed about my inadequacies. This game is tough, and not always in the sense of memorization or determination. You will die over and over and over again, which is fine for those that prefer a challenge but, at times, Uprising feels almost like it is trying too hard to appeal to the super hardcore Contra fans.
    lol

    Beware little girls?

Always incredible given that at one time people were expected to beat these games without game-overing at some point, but now checkpoints can be too frustrating.

    They ragequit LOL

EDIT: That super long load time at the beginning is very peculiar.

EDIT: Anyone who is playing the game, how common are the death-trap QTEs? Also can they be mashed out? Do they change every run? I wouldn't mind being prepared for those lol.

A pointless aside: It seems like people know how stupid they sound when they say "It is too hard". That's why they will call the game "too punishing". It is much easier to dismiss games they can't play that way. Among other things, it shifts the blame for the poor reporting/criticism(making things altogether unclear). I also think people are much more prone to jump on "it is too hard", because that's an old school bullshit excuse. I don't think I've ever heard anyone call someone out, face to face, on punishing game excuse, but not so for the other excuse. (Also "unfair" only sometimes works, but that's even more hilarious because that kind of fairness doesn't even exist.)

This also applies when people are not talking about themselves or only themselves, mainly when the modern gamers' expectations comes up or the casual market. "This game might be too punishing for iphone blah console blah." I think if you say something is too hard for a large group of people to do, you imply they are stupid/weak/inexperienced/etc. Which is true, but then you will be a "punishing" individual lol.

One last thing they can do is add "for me" to the end of it. Perhaps reworded into something like "It is not for me"(though I'll still play it and bash it). Subjectivity, the safest escape plan of them all. This is the most honest answer though(duh).

(Do understand I am only talking people's reactions to this phenomenon. It is not like a game can't be bad by having unbalanced level design. Demanding more than what you likely can do(on 1 life, anyway). Becoming too hard. However being able to tell the difference between a classic and a quarter-muncher is too punishing.)

Seriously the game is only hard when you play Arcade mode, Rising-mode is way too easy with a powerfull character so I really dont see the problem with the difficulty in this game ¬.¬

And it gets pritty fast boreing with a powerfull char, because you can make so many mistakes! (But it can also be fun if you want to blast through)
