Final Fantasy XIV at E3 2010

Eorzeapedia posted their interview with SE.. not a lot of interesting stuff (New York Times was there too asking stupid questions) but this I found interesting:

Eorzeapedia: Will surnames be optional? If not, how will you make it easier to send /tells to other players?

Tanaka: It’s going to be mandatory. You have to have a surname. The surname and the name will be unique. There will only be one person on the server who has that name. However, you will have a sort of short version – a nickname of the full name. So for example, Saori Hill will be my full name, but if you make it remember “Saori”, then you only have to use “Saori” to /tell someone.

Eorzeapedia: Is that nickname chosen by the player during the character creation?

Tanaka: When you make a /tell for the first time, if you type in “Saori”, you will have every Saori in every world appearing in the results. So you select which one is going to be Saori for yourself. The user will decide what the nickname is going to be for the other person.

FFXIV is one of the few MMOs recently where there aren't 2 "sides" that are competing or fighting.... that's a pretty big difference.

It would have been much better if it was Rifts like the old Palladium RPG. Yes, I know that no one else on the planet is going to know what I am talking about.

EDIT: Wow, interesting. This company is getting sued by Palladium because they are using the Rifts name. It looks like they have a really good case.

Other than that, the game is looking amazing. Really like the new combat system.

Most likely you'll see better vids when this is near retail. They seem to be relying on fanboy/girl-ism to generate hype for this game.

SE really should release videos of pcs fighting big "epic" monters or parties taking on said monsters if they really want to hype the game. I'm sure not very many people will be entranced by some pcs attacking oversized fauna.

My guild was chatting about FFXI and FFIV ysterday (they all played ffxi on release and quit around level 40). What came up is "how similar to FFXI it was" and how boring the gameplay look.

If it's any indication of the excitment it cause for people who havent played FFXI a lot, it's going to be interesting to see how they plan to get people to play their game...outside the franchise name.
