PS3 Capture Card

Aight so I was wondering if anyone knew a cheap place to get a decent capture card to record videos for m PS3. SD is fine, and I assume it's cheaper. And while I'm here, is it possible to download software to have backwards compatibility with the PS3 or is that not possible/hardware related?

I'm unsure right now since I'm saving for a car, but definitely not more than $100. But I'm just looking at prices right now so post whatever you guys want. Won't have the money for it for a couple weeks anyways.

It's theoretically possible, but Sony would sooner monetize their back catalog in the form of digital downloads of older games rather than just give it to you for (sort of) free.

How are those compared to their pricier counterparts? Like would there be profound differences between a $30 composite CC and a $80 composite CC? And main differences between the cards and the USB devices? I really dunno much about this :<

I've never used an actual capture card but I use one of these and it's absolutely amazing. Pricey and probably overkill since you don't care for HD recording.

I see the USB Live 2. How is the quality on that? I'm really concerned about the quality of the recording of the product if I am buying them cheap, because I'm sure the $200 HD one would work nicely. The main reason I'm looking for composite is because atm I don't have an HDTV until I go back to college (August~), or if my parents decide to buy one.

Hauppage has been around forever, I bought my first tv tuner card back in 2002. Most tv tuner cards have video capture capabilities so dont limit yourself in searching, it's just a matter of software available. Pinnacle is the higher end brand name. Really, anything on Rockstaru's link should work fine for what you want. As for quality, your best bet is to read the customer comments of the items from newegg.

Hope your computer is decent enough to record though, it can get laggy if not.

Dell Studio, bought in December, so I hope it's capable. :< Yeah I read the happaud review on amazon but I didn't really understand most of what he said and got bored reading it halfway through (wall o text). I'll check through the newegg link more thoroughly though.

Everything below the $200 price-point is more or less different flavors of the same garbage, most use the same cheap encoding chips, etc.

From an actual quality difference it's negligible, companies with good drivers/software are much more important than the actual hardware.

My advice: Don't. Get something that can do at least 720p, or else your output to a TV or monitor is generally gonna look pretty shitty, compared to the normal hook up you use (unless you have a SD TV or something and are used to SD, then you won't notice shit different really)

That said if you're only worried about the qualit for streaming, A) make sure you have a decent upload B) SD is fine unless you wanna spend a good chunk of money for a HD card and have a really good upload. (i.e: http://www.justin.tv/shukuffxi/b/258400240 was streamed in SD, which imo, is way more than good enough for streaming, unless you're super hardcore about it)

Yeah that type quality is fine, and yeah I run on a regular SDTV atm until I go back to school in august. And even then I'm sure I'll be fine recording in SD, then playing in HD when I'm not recording. I don't want to drop 400$ on MW2 personally since I wouldn't be really making videos for anything else.

That's fine, my general advice then is don't get a USB card (some ppl like them, but generally i've had issues with 2 different ones, and the quality doesn't seem that hot).

Spend like 80-100$ on a Hauppauge internal card and you're good.

That should fit your needs, about same quality as a 100$ internal card. Just make sure it's in stock when you order, I ordered an HQ one a while back, out of stock + problems, took 2 months to get -_- That said, it streams quiet nicely and let's me play in HD :D

Most are PCI-E cards, so yes, you'll install them into your computer. You should be able to pick it up pretty easily, but make sure you have a slot free first.

Is it possible to use a splitter for composite cable and output to two sources?

I've been in the market for a capture card myself (preferably USB), but from what I've read they all seem to incur a bit of lag, so it wouldn't be in my best interest to game via it, and rather just have it receiving the video/audio feed while I play on my TV instead.
