Honestly the biggest loss in my eyes was Sopel as funny as that sounds, if there's any one thing I'd be worried about come playoff time it's the lack of a stay-at-home shotblocker to pair with Hjalmarsson.

I have an even greater respect for both Hjalmarsson and Sopel for doing what they do and blocking shots, WILLINGLY, after I took a puck to the eye lol. Like I've never really been a fan of sliding in front of shots, even more so now even though it was just a deflected shot. That's a big price to pay just to win.

I'm gonna miss Ladd the most from a contribution stand point, but I'm gonna miss Burish and Buff from a fan favorite viewpoint.

You're right. I forget about Hudler but either way, I auto default Detroit into being better just because I don't see them having to deal with as many injuries.

Mike Modano will join the Red Wings, the Free Press has learned.

The Wings have been in hot pursuit of Modano, flying him in from Dallas a month ago and wooing him over lunch and a Tigers game. He also has suitors in San Jose and Minnesota, but has made up his mind.

“Big announcement Thursday,” Modano sent in a text Monday.

Modano, 40, wouldn’t reveal his hand. But a source with knowledge of the decision, who did not want to upstage the announcement, confirmed that the Westland native was coming home after 20 seasons with the Dallas franchise, where he became the highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history.

General manager Ken Holland would only say that he was hopeful.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” he said. “When Mike was in Detroit a couple of weeks ago and spent time here, and in all the conversations I’ve had since with him and his agent, Mike Liut, I think they understand all the positives to coming to Detroit.”

Modano has been offered a one-year contract for $1.25 million to center the third line, instantly transforming the Wings into a team with three legitimate scoring lines.

Did he get offered less money/nothing by Dallas? I thought I remember that Modano left because he felt he still could be a second line center, and didn't want to be used on a third of forth line....yet is going to be a third liner now in Detroit??

To be fair Hudler and Clearly are slated to be his linemates on the 3rd, which is better than most other teams, plus the Wings have a track record of old guys having good years. Dallas flat out didn't offer him a contract iirc.

Edmonton, among many teams, just haven't gotten better.

Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Pajarvi-Svensson coming in to replace Nilsson, Patrick O'Sullivan (initials POS for a reason I swear) can't be a bad thing.

While they still have the atrocious contracts in Horcoff, Souray and Khabibulin, I can't see them repeating as last in the NHL again. I'm not gonna say they'll make a charge into the playoffs, but they won't be the West's basement team again this year.

God some of the people in Chicago need to hop off the Hawks bandwagon asap, they're annoying me to no end. So many idiots on Facebook making comments about how the Hawks are doomed and management should be ashamed at how they treated Niemi in particular, but all of the guys that left as well.

Like hello, do you not fucking know how the salary cap works and the situation we were in? Had Tallon not screwed things up with some of the RFA contracts and not overpaid on Huet/Campbell we'd be in a lot better position. It's the true hockey fans that understand we had to make moves, the rest of these people need to get educated how things work before they just jump on a team and start rooting for them.

Edit: Also, Pittsburgh held tryouts for their ice girls, just in case Craig Anderson and the Avs face them in the SCF. I don't think this girl will make it, though.

I went to HS with one of the 2009-2010 Pens girls and had a handful of classes with her... she was a cheerleader, a straight up bitch, and never once wore any Penguins stuff or even mentioned them. I guess for that position, being a true fan and/or having hockey knowledge are trumped by the girl's ability to get flirty with a sweaty 45 year old obese guy.

Just a bunch of 2-way deals for their AHL guys, the only ones with an outside shot of actually playing on the Hawks are Makorov and Brophey.

Since they got a pretty nice deal on Turco($1.3M it looks like) they have enough space to bring up Kyle Beach if he's ready, most fans have been dying to see how he can do. Word is they're also after Jay McKee to fill Sopel's #5/PK spot.

I was the one who organized and ran last year's fantasy league. We used Yahoo, but honestly I tried ESPN this past season for a university league and it was much better. Other than ESPN.com's main page freezing my laptop cause it can't handle all the video and live update scoring scripts, it was much, much nicer.
