2010 NHL Offseason Thread

I feel like the list is half by stickhandling skills and half by how great the players were, because Kovalev isn't (and really wasn't) ever that great. He's had a few really good years, but I feel like a couple ridiculous highlights really put him on that list.

To be fair though, Kovalev DID go off on some team and put up like 5 goals in one game last season or the season before. I know because my fantasy opponent that week had him on his roster... ._.

List should be:
[1+2] Gretzky and Lemieux (debate)
[3-10] 8 of Crosby, Ovechkin, Jagr, Bure, Richard, Lidstrom/Orr/Coffey, Howe, Foresberg, Hull Family

And goalies aren't players? No Roy love?

But seriously, any list that doesn't have Gretzky+Lemieux as a 1-2 pairing automatically loses all credibility.

Also the new BG thing is the fucking greatest thing ever hahahaha

Give me a week to mull it over. Potential for a truce exists because you're not Detroit or Philadelphia and I don't percieve the Rangers to be a threat ever since I watched Stephen Valiquette's positive outlook on life escape with the breath in his lungs as he sighed after the 7th goal against him last Fall went in and the crowd erupted as Sid celebrated his hat trick.

Yessss that was me with Kovalev, the only redeeming thing he did all year long. It was 4 goals, but still a lot and ended up being 22% of his goal production on the season (he scored 18 goals).

Man imagine how bad the Rangers would be if they hadn't gotten Lunqvist with a throwaway draft pick.

Hey man, no one cares about baseball. Plus whenever that trade happened, was no where near the media coverage of today, and even the 80's so I'm sure at the time there wasn't a big deal made on it except from pissed off Sox fans. People view it back as a historical trade as omg wow, but when it happened it probably got a corner newspaper article mention.

Honest question here, was Babe Ruth a superstar and the face of the MLB when he was traded, or was he someone with a promising future, and then blossomed into a hall of famer? Gretzky was the face of the NHL and a superstar already at the time of his trade, I'd say that was bigger news.

Los Angelans and Edmontonians ever brawl in the streets and put each other in the hospital? Do they now have a one hundred year rivalry? No, didn't think so. Did Gretzky go on to win titles for Los Angeles? Nope. You just forgot and now you're trying to act like you considered Babe Ruth but then logically came to conclusions that led you to believe Gretzky was the most important person ever. You forgot, youre embarassed, its okay.

The impact the Gretzky trade made on the NHL was much bigger than any impact the Ruth trade had.

Oilers/Kings were a big rivalry from 1979 till the mid 90s though.

Actually no, I don't view Babe Ruth being traded as bigger than Gretzky, regardless of how it panned out for both players post trade and I didn't forget about it. New York and Boston would hate each for some reason or another even if the trade never had happened. Certain rivalries are just meant to be, based on geography, fan base, trades, whatever. Hawks/Wings, Pens/Flyers, Yanks/Sox, Dodgers/Yanks, Vikings/Packers, Cubs/White Sox, Giants/Jets.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that left wing Riley Cote has retired as a player to become assistant coach of the Flyers American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Cote will join head coach Greg Gilbert and associate coach Kjell Samuelsson on the Adirondack coaching staff.
