So, at this point, I believe the Devils face fines for an illegal contract and get a hit against their cap and to re-work this deal, would only raise the cap number which the Devils cant do.

They may or may not, and the fines can be up to $5m, which as you said count against their cap.

Rangers have been linked to Kovalchuk recently as well, although they would have to get rid of at least one of their many terrible contracts to sign him (which would be a great move by Sather, meaning... it won't happen).

Poni is only a one year deal so they are fine for this season to sign him.

Also, the Rangers arent going to be able to sign Kovalchuk, they still need to re-sign Staal. Granted they'll have 7Mish free when Redden gets a bus ticket to Hartford. But Kovalchuk is the typical greedy ass Russian.

lol glad to see they ruled for the NHL with this one, I think they probably should have shut these types of contracts down a bit sooner(yeah yeah, Hawks & Hossa, blahblah). If these continued several years down the road there'd be a lot of teams in deep shit and the overall state of the league would probably decline heavily, plus this maybe keeps the next CBA negotiations a bit more level.

Really, the major sticking point HAD to be the last 5 years making the current league minimum. When compared to the Franzen, Louongo, Zetterberg deals, they all make 1 mill for 2 years at the end and Hossa is making 750k the last 2 years of his.

I don't believe a player can make under the league minimum so if 12 years from now, the minimum goes up (which it should) the would have to raise to the current which actually raise his cap hit.

tl;dr: the arbitrator also said that with the decision and within the rules of the CBA they can also investigate and potentially withdraw the contracts of Hossa/Pronger/Luongo/Savard.

How does that work? They win championships with ineligible player contracts, do their records and championships (aka the Blackhawks SC win and the Flyers EC Championship) get vacated ala NCAA?

Would assume it's just the same as what happens with Kovy's nullifies the individual contract, player/team both get fined if they think it's intentional, player becomes a UFA...though maybe more like an RFA where the team gets a short window to submit a new contract before it's open season. It's incredibly unlikely they'll touch any of the previous contracts, the arbitrator was just pointing out that they technically could.

Or go circus style crazy and make everyone with a frontloaded contract sign a new one that has no "cap circumvention." By making Franzen and Zetterberg's cap hits both rise, The Wings are forced to part with Brad Stuart (OH NOOOOOO) and instead bring in Willie Mitchell. What a horrible series of events for the Wings!

From I understood, they were already going go be over the cap even if the deal stayed @ 6mil, so they must have had some idea of what parts to move?

But don't get me wrong, I'd be thrilled to see him go elsewhere. If the Devils had a brief Kovalchuck rental, a first round exit... And lost prospects, picks, players... AND possible fines from the league, well... I'd be very happy =0
