But don't get me wrong, I'd be thrilled to see him go elsewhere. If the Devils had a brief Kovalchuck rental, a first round exit... And lost prospects, picks, players... AND possible fines from the league, well... I'd be very happy =0
It would certainly lessen the sting of the Rangers missing the playoffs again, I would imagine.

Also the Pronger, Luongo, and Savard contracts technically could be looked at, since none of those players have actually played a game on those, whereas Hossa, Zetterberg, Franzen et al. all played on the contracts last season so it would be difficult to invalidate those. I can only imagine if the Flyers got a second chance to NOT fuck up Pronger's contract, that one should probably stay since it isn't breaking cap rules no matter what.

The sting of the Rangers wasn't that bad. I wanted them to get in, but at best they were a mediocre team that was maddingy inconsistent all season. Take away the 7-1 start and their amazing finish and they were a below .500 team. I expect the same thing this season. Marginal improvements made, little more scoring, youth developing more. Might make a run for a 6-8 seed but I'm not expecting a whole lot.

Edit -- psh.. Again? First time we missed the playoffs since the lockout.

And watching the Devils suffer is great independently of my teams fuck-ups

The vancouver newspapers are reporting that the league has requested documents in regards to the Luongo contract. What it doesn't say is whether those requests were made before or after the ruling.

Did anyone expect differently? Is anyone really surprised by this? Its clearly an abuse of salary cap rules.

What does it matter? The arbitrator's decision did not give the NHL permission to start investigating the contracts. The arbitrator's decision merely acknowledged that going after all the contracts, not just Kovalchuk's, is within their rights.

And he's actually wrong in that regard. No where in the CBA does it allow for the NHL to withdraw contracts that have already been registered.

It’s specifically mentioned in 26.10 there is no limit on when the contract can be investigated. And it also states that the league’s authority to investigate is not hindered by the SPC already being approved and registered under Article 11. They can de-register the SPC and impose penalties at any point they are able to determine a circumvention has occurred under Article 26.

And Pronger's contract is an over-35 SPC, so I doubt his will require reworking/penalties, because his whole contract applies to the cap whether he plays, retires or is waived.

    Day late but it's Dodgers/Giants, not Dodgers/Yanks

As for the issue, I'd say the Gretzky trade was bigger for two reasons. A: Media coverage was much bigger during this time, and B: Baseball was in a huge decline. A lot of people credit Ruth's home run barrage for saving baseball, but at the time of the trade it was a passing thing. Hell the reason Ruth was traded was due to him wanting a raise and threatening to walk off the team. The Gretzky trade on the other hand was nation wide news.

    DAT CONTRACT

Via Puck Daddy, Bruins and 'Nucks appear to be cooperating with the NHL "looking at" their contracts (they don't want to use the term "investigation".) Flyers are stonewalling. Chicago has no comment. New Jersey still QQing.

Why should the Flyers be concerned about their contract? Sure their cap is lowered annually, but the hit applies for the entirety of the contract.

I'm sure Pronger can play it out, but who's to say he will. The guy skates with out spending much energy so he'll be playing barring something major (injury/sudden retirement).

Kovy on the otherhand doesn't seem like the kind of player to play past 40. That and the fact that the contract goes from a NMC to a NTC, making it easier to dump that salary.

Eric Belanger seems to have signed a one year contract, but the team he signed with, blocked him from telling with who he signed.

NHL is also investigating Marc Savard's contract with the Bruins. Seems they're going to at least attempt to go after these deals.

Good, they should shoot down every one of these deals, they all stink. Play by the rules and ship your stars to Atlanta

At this point I just check the signings at the bottom of the main page on capgeek, they seem to get the inside track on everything before most other places break it.

The Pens play by the rules, what I wouldn't give to have Malkin and Crosby's cap numbers be 6.0.... thats an extra 5.2 mil to work with every year.

Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Orpik, Fleury - 5 players of 20 (1/4th) make up half the cap space.

    Edit:
Hmmmm. It seems Paul Martin is now our highest paid defenseman.

    Crosby/Malkin (8.7 apiece) Staal (4.0), Martin (5.0), Fleury (5.0) = 31.4m, leaving 28.0 for the other 15 players.
