Nope! I did forget that we had some big news with the retirement of superstar Riley Cote and his new job as assistant coach of the Phantoms. His coaching strategy will be wonderful. The Phantoms will be down by 1 with a period to go and he'll be telling his players to just go out there and knock that guys head off. Don't worry about scoring. Learn by example, his one career NHL goal.

Possibly the most important offseason in club history has been little more than re-signing several young components (Eric Fehr, Tomas Fleischmann and Jeff Schultz, etc.) and sweeping out the trash on the blueline to create real opportunities for John Carlson and Karl Alzner. But honestly, what else did George McPhee need to do? The Caps are loaded up and down the roster. Rather than make some regrettably overpriced free agent acquisition, he can fine tune the engine down the stretch. All things considered, it's the right approach.

Coulda fooled me from Game 6, June 2009 onwards. Fuck even Osgood was looking [more] terrible [than usual] around January that season.

I don't see how Pens aren't in the talk for the SCF this year. We should be in it EVERY year as long as Sid/Geno/Staal/Fleury are all on the roster. If Shero says we can win with Michalek/Martin and Gonchar can walk, then we can win with Michalek/Martin. Lets not forget, 15 players from the Pens 2007-2008 SCF loss season were unsigned going into that summer. Shero signed the right pieces, left out other pieces, had the coach fired midseason, got new pieces at the trade deadline in the Kunitz/Tangredi-for-Whitney, and won the Cup with a roster that was 50% different and a whole different coach from the SCF the previous year. If that doesn't say something about how smart our GM is & how talented the remaining core (Orpik/Staal/Crosby/Dupius/Fleury/Malkin/Talbot/Letang/Kennedy) is, nothing ever could.

Pens do look scary this year with the reamped D. I think moving Malkin to the Wing will do good things too, if they opt to do that.

SI's rankings are retarded btw. Most predictions are really. They just take who won last year and jumble it up a bit depending on the big offseason moves. Every year someone surprises. This will be no different.

Out of that list, the only people that would've benefited the Penguins last season's playoffs are Malone and Scuderi. Here's to hoping that Staal plays more like Malone this season, I'd love to see him post in front of the net more often.

Actually I kinda agree with you there, tough to imagine the Pens being under the radar but that's how I feel right now. I don't get the Flyers hype, their goalie situation was dicey last year and that was when Ray Emery was supposedly healthy. New Jersey, assuming Kovy gets a legit contract done, made the biggest splash but Brodeur has another year of wear and tear on him. Boston is very susceptible to a sophomore slump from Rask and finding consistent (and non-injured) scoring. Buffalo is, well, Buffalo, great tending and D but little else. Will Carey Price finally act like a #1 for the Montreal Mini-Mites? Even my Caps could use a full season of Varlamov and Carlson to make me feel comfortable. Unless Niemi lands in Philly, I'd say Pittsburgh is still the prohibitive favorite out of the East until further notice. It's been mentioned here by others but the most improved team that could make a huge jump is probably Tampa.

It's one of the constants of hockey, just like the Sharks blowing it hard in the postseason and Sidney Crosby diving at least 70 times during the season.
