I wouldn't hold off seeing the doctor either. Vacation is nice and all, but severe pain and likely infection is nothing to ignore.

I'd not assume that age as any bearing on pain though. I still have 3 of mine. The one that I did get removed had to be done as an emergency surgery, literally half of it had become a huge cavity. I've had kidney stones and a shattered knee-cap, but the pain I felt with that was amazing. That being said, 2 shots and a removed tooth later, I had no problems. I didn't eat that night, but was eating and smoking again by noon the next day. Saying that, I'd do what everyone else has recommended and go see someone. Infections suck, dry socket sucks, and tooth pain is the worst pain.

Me: Took 3 1/2 weeks for everything to go back to normal. I was given pain meds during it, didn't take anything after that cause ya know, I'm not a bitch. (5 wisdom teeth removed).

Sister: Can't feel the left side of her face now. Was heavily medicated for 3 weeks. Took her a month to "go back to normal." (4 wisdom teeth removed).

In conclusion: Ask your doctor, you paid for the service

    5 wisdom teeth?
also i guess when you're younger the pains a lot less, I got mine pulled like 2 years ago when I was 16 and it was much less shitty than i expected. first day was ass but i just took pain meds and benadryl and slept through it, then the next day i was eating pizza and never got a dry socket, pain also wasn't too bad after first day too, only took like 2 of my pain meds then was able to deal with it with just 2 pills of ibuprofen

On my lower left side I had 2 and it was pushing my bigger wisdom tooth out of position. The x rays looks like it was chipped off from the other one but it was another wisdom tooth there.

Edit: I was 20. I had braces when I was 11-15. No cavities. Suck it.

Have you been rinsing your mouth out with salt water? They told me like 1/3tsp per cup of water and that's what I did. After the pain went away I started eating and just rinsed with that to keep the food out.

I must have a higher tolerance for pain than I thought. Had all four of mine out last year and only got about 20 vicodin total... 10 to start which I took in about 4 days, and then waited like 3 days to ask for more; because by then I then had 2 dry sockets and got some clove paste.

6 months later everything started puffing up weird and I was very sore, went back and they had to open everything back up and scrape it out, and got bone fragments out of both... got Tylenol and Codeine then.

And I'm relatively "old" for wisdom teeth extraction, honestly expected more issues. I can't tell you anything about anything looking weird or yellow or anything, I really don't remember anything like that... i remember one of my stitches felt really weird and the spot would be really sore anytime it moved a little.

I would ask if they know any dentists in the area you're currently in to have a look see, 4 days to have that checked is honestly a long time to wait with something as sensitive as wisdom teeth and whatnot.

Also... re the meds... tough situation, but could just say you think you overmedded yourself early on when still on anesthesia, or were in too much pain, and will need a refill. I know when I get a massive migraine, I eventually realize that at some point I swallowed like 8 or 10 excedrin at once in a pain stupor.

How do you people get dry sockets? Please explain. I smoked and everything after mine and just made sure to rinse out with that shit they give you...

I do have the syringe and I've been using that to clean them after everything I eat (although I'm so careful chewing I've never had anything get stuck in either of them), brushing like I normally do, albeit carefully, and I've been rinsing with salty water as well. I think they're just infected or something :/

I didn't get anything to rinse with, was just told to rinse with salt water. It's basically just the scabbing or whatever coming off I think (isn't it?), so that the nerves/bone are exposed. I'd guess some people would be more predisposed to it... I didn't use straws, I don't smoke, etc. No idea how or why, just know I suddenly had radiating pain that never went away, but it took me like 3 days to even go in to do anything about it because it felt rather dull to me at first, and I was like, meh, I can handle this.

Dry socket is when the clot that filled up the hole of the now removed tooth gets pulled off somehow, and the bone is exposed to your saliva etc. It's apparently very painful and the dentist needs to pack the hole with stuff while your bone heals on top of itself.

They didn't pack it for me at all, was given clove paste to insert myself with another of the curved syringe things. Thick enough to stay in the hole and covers sufficiently, without too horrible a taste. When they put my first applications on for me when I finally went in, I was practically euphoric because the pain stopped almost immediately. Was crazy..

I actually just had my upper 2 wisdom teeth removed on that monday, the 7th. I just started to be able to eat solid foods (they still need to be very soft), but the swelling has gone down drastically. I only had one impacted tooth, and the stitches (also very irritating), seem to be falling out right now.

I know that the lower ones can be more irritating, but you should be back to normal in like 2 weeks.

Also, the swelling gets worse a few days into having them taken out, and then it goes down pretty quickly.

I didn't really read much of replies to this thread, but since I also just got mine out I thought I would share.

EDIT: My doctor also gave me very little pills... Only 16 Hydrocodine... I used like 10 or so more from left over. I think he hates me. He also said I would be ready to go back to whatever I do in 3 days, which I don't think he realized meant going back to 60 hours a week of work (40 of which is outside, and it's now 90 degrees in this part of CA).

    Speaking of wisdom teeth...

I can feel two in the upper part of my mouth coming in. One's partially in right now, and one's barely broken the surface. Now I've had one of my teeth removed when I was a kid because there wasn't any room in my mouth, so maybe that's why I haven't felt any pain yet.

Should I be worried about these two coming in yet?

Wow I guess I'm lucky based on others experiences. I had my top 2 wisdom teeth removed the Friday before Memorial Day weekend and I was fine enough to eat a sausage and pepper hero at a Memorial Day BBQ. I didn't really have much pain past the first 2 days at all.

Most of the discoloration from mine has dissipated, only slight yellow remains. My inflammation/hurting has also went down, although it hurts more when I wake up, and subsides as the day goes on. My bottom left stitches came out, but both top and the other bottom still are in my teeth and I dont want to cut or pull them, even though they are starting to dangle around more... I guess I'll just leave them till they fall out.

My gums aren't as sore anymore either. Seems like yesterday was the worst of it. My top holes are almost non existent. It's mostly the bottoms that are causing problems.

I want to wait a week or so at least if I can before I start chewing with my back teeth though. I'm not as worried about doing damage to the holes as I am getting shit stuck in there and it being a pain getting it out (I'm not really sure how deep the holes go, and I don't want to go poking around and ruin the healing process at all)

Also on a side note regarding the meds, my dad went out yesterday and filled his own prescription and gave me all my shit back, so I'm satisfied.

When I had mine taken out, I was at a party that night (it was New Year's Eve)

No pain at all. I musta had a super doctor, because I took one Vicodin and that was it.
