I dunno about you nigga but last I checked we're still spilling oil in the Gulf like a rapper making it rain in the club. We're not running out of resources as fast as you think we are.

Hopefully we mine it all ourselves, since we've spent so many millions fixing their country for them.

I'm convinced at this point that this news is just the DoD fishing for support (and distracting from the abundant failures) for the Afghan war. These mineral deposits in Afghanistan have been known for decades, and as it already has been mentioned, the Chinese have been all over this since 2004-2006:

The " discovery" of Afghanistan's minerals will sound pretty silly to old timers. When I was living in Kabul in the early 1970's the USG, the Russians, the World Bank, the UN and others were all highly focused on the wide range of Afghan mineral deposts. The Russian geological service was all over the North in the 60's and 70's.

I can understand greed as a motivator and all that, but how exactly do we mine someone else's land? Did we actually conquer Afghanistan and annex it or something? Or would we just mine it and not care that it's not ours? Or would we just manipulate our way into a good deal to get the mining rights?

I guess I'm just not as politicosavvy to understand the mechanics of how this all goes down.

How it usually work is: you invade a country, help establish or install a American friendly government, through whatever means necessary, and this government in turn gives favourable contracts for American companies, in say, oil extraction or other minerals. But this only really works well if you can get the government you're helping to build to remain responsive to the US government and no other political force. For example, it's easier to get an autocratic government that relies on a foreign power to stay in power to do what a foreign power wants, but this doesn't work as well with a democratic government.

It's really hard to get away with outright stealing the resources of a foreign land these days. You either try and get a government that supports you into power or you invade and do everything as you can so the international community doesn't give a shit.

    This just in:

There's a shitload of oil in Iraq!

When that country, which actually has some infrastructure to access its vast natural resources wealth, achieves some measure of stability and prosperity by selling oil, then I'll believe it's possible for Afghanistan to do the same (after 20+ years of development).

Awesome, hope this works out for them. Nothing brings about moderation and stability more then a strong economy. I hope the US stays in there to help them build that infrastructure up, and a few decades down the line they could get paid back for their efforts (who knows how that will go down though, they really need to get something in writing).

I always figured they'd pull out soon right as they overtook the soviet high score

Just ask the government of your country why they are in Africa, South America, etc etc. mining native lands, drilling for oil, deforesting all those lovely jungles that's not even their land. And not only that, the people which live there have no power to tell those countries to take their operations and go fuck themselves. Shit is happening right now. How can you be so blind and uninformed. People that read the news and believe it word for word are stupid. Do the legwork yourself. God damn sheep. But than again us wolves need to eat something.

On a more serious note. I wish there were a World Army that was pacifist and would help countries like stated above that couldn't defend themselves. Oh wait, that's something the United Nations.... oh wait. Haha. Got me there. Fucking failure. People let these countries rape their land thinking they'll get a majority of the money themselves to build their own infrastructure in time and kick the foreign companies out. Doesn't happen that way. Shit makes me so mad. Fuck capitalism. When this US vs Iran shit hits the fan I am asking for asylum in another country. True story.

If Bush showed any signs of foresight, or concern for the future of humanity, then maybe your comparison here wouldn't be so amazingly stupid.

Focus on space because otherwise we're just going to keep squabbling like ignorant little kids fighting over a blanket in their crib, and we're old enough to just go find another fucking blanket.

Right now we're stupid ass children with NUCLEAR FUCKING WEAPONS, so yeah, I think it should be a priority to anyone who places any value in anything humanity has ever done, or could ever do, for us to get the fuck out of the crib, and "diversify our portfolio" of places to live.

Unless an asteroid or comet is on an imminent collision course with this planet, it'll be hundreds of years before we have a solid foothold on another planet.

We'll sooner see mining of near-earth asteroids or that moon base.
