    Little 10.1inch Screen Laptops

I'm looking to buy a new laptop. My old laptop is a massive HP monster that's survived four years and three continents but sadly, a corner of the screen has burnt out and it's really heavy to lug around. I was thinking of going for one of those cute little 10.1 inch screen laptops that are all over the place. I basically want it for email, web browsing, random stuff, and maybe silly games (I do my proper gaming on a desktop these days).

I looked at the iPad but I need keys to click and I thought it looked like a Star Trek toy more than a computer. Plus, it's a bit out of my budget.

What I really need is something that has really good battery power (my current leviathan dies after about 20 minutes) and something that won't fall to bits if it's carted about in my purse (and also fits in said purse).

What are some good brands for those cute little laptops that are durable and well-made?

Can you put new software on those things without the CD/DVD drives?

Should I just go for a regular laptop for any particular reason?

Something to keep in mind is that netbooks, in general, are not particularly robust machines. Expect maybe later Pentium 4 type performance. They do fine if you keep them on-task and don't expect too much, but they're best as a second+ computer (though you do say you have a desktop).

If you want a netbook, I'd say to look at ASUS. If you want an Atom based one, the 1001p is a good model. Costs around $300-320 US. I'd recommend one of the "textured" finishes.

Generally speaking, most netbooks of a given generation are nearly identical hardware-wise. What they can include and still be a "netbook" for OS licensing is pretty restrictive. For example, companies can't include more than 1 GB of RAM - though it's something you'd want to upgrade to the supported 2GB.

Software...you can get around the lack of a CD/DVD drive pretty easily. Put install files on a USB key, or network share, or just download them. USB DVD drives are also available, figure around $50 or so, as an option as well.

What many people don't tend to realize is that you have a middle ground as well. Depending on budget and needs, you could also consider a CULV based laptop. Little more expensive, not usually quite as small, or quite as good battery life...but typically cheaper, smaller, and longer-lasting than a "normal" laptop (example)

Isiolia pretty much summed up everything, but I wanted to add something in and stress the last point. I've personally seen a lot of students in the CS&E Dept. purchase netbooks with the understand that they're not as powerful as a 'normal' laptop and think that it won't bother them, only to get irritated with them 3 months down the road. I would suggest thinking very hard about what you'll be using it for and thinking about a 12'' or 13'' laptop instead.

Thanks for all of the advice. I am not going out to buy immediately, so I'm actually going to do a lot of research on this one!

Sorry for the quasi-bump, latest thread I saw in search and less than a month old.

But I, too, have been sitting tentatively on the netbook fence for a couple of weeks.

The situation is this. My laptop, I've had a Dell XPS (yes I know) for about 2 years and a few months, less than half that time it has had a working battery. Of course the batter died right after warranty and I just refused, too stubborn maybe, to get another battery that would just do the same thing. Nonetheless the laptop is still useful, I take it a lot of places with me, it is just a bit big and bound to an outlet.

In August I am going back to Japan, and may be in Asia for a couple years then go back to school. So I want something with a good battery life, that will travel well with me and do basic netbook type things: read, research, write, check e-mail, be around if my laptop blows up. I figure if I need a little more oomph for something at work or home there is always my laptop. Should I go for it or just say fuck it, netbooks are a big fad, I'm going to use my money to buy another iPod since I lost my nano again?

The one I have been looking at is the ASUS Eee PC 1001-P, white, matte screen (important to me). The only other question I have is how do I go about upgrading to the 2GB memory.

    Thanks.

Here's the Order page for the 2 GB ram you need.

On the backside of the netbook there is one screw near the top middle that you need to take out. Just unclip the old ram and put the new one in.

Netbooks are ideal for college students, right? I just need something to type reports on and look up stuff on the internet. I've mostly been a HewlettPackard user but looked up Asus products based on the advice of others from this thread.

I found this on newegg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220504. Is this what I want?

At the time of the article was written, no pricing has been listed for it. Do you expect it to be over $300? I would prefer something cheap in case it breaks/gets stolen.

Actual performance figures are unknown at this stage, as are battery estimates, but the ASUS Eee PC 1215N is predicted to go on sale come July 2010. Pricing is expected to be between $550 and $600, making it expensive for a netbook but – if the dual-core Atom and Ion GPU can live up to expectations – comparatively cheap for an ultraportable.

Why the hell does a laptop with an ION chip have Optimus, that's basically Asus trying to make the laptop worse since Optimus is still very buggy.

If you can stomach the extra price, Alienware's M11x R1 (version with a Core2Duo instead of newer models with i processors) is the way to go for portable powerusers imo. Full netbook benefits (i.e. battery life) when you switch off the GPU, and when you're plugged in (hell even on battery, but only about 2 hours under heavy 3d gaming) you can enjoy new games on the go.

I guess the ION 2 ship is more power hungry and thus requires the Optimus to manage its drain.

Nvidia still has a looooong ways to go to make Optimus a decent tech, I wouldn't recommend any laptop running it at this point tbh.

IMO, I would had never used a netbook in college. I can't see myself writting a 10-40 page report on that tiny keyboard and screen.

U could get a cheap usb keyboard but the resolution on the screen is killer when you have to use 3 - 5 programs to do a project.

But I do have a netbook and I love it for what it can do, other things I go back to my laptop.

I have an Aspire D250 1694 and like it pretty well. Mainly use it as a MP3 player and for browsing the web in hotel rooms. Gotta say though, Windows 7 Starter is fucking annoying, I wish there was a XP option with the 6 cell battery (thing lasts like 8 hours, fucking awesome).

Edit: To OP, I just carry around a USB disk drive in my bag.

Target has a similar net book thats not refurbished for $199 this week.

Would have to see if they have them in store though. Also have a 320GB external HD for 47+tax (cost around 50 after tax). These are small drives too, not normal size I think. It was alot shorter than the WD passports I'm accustomed to.

That is actually the same damn Netbook, lol. AO532H. I bought one from Woot.com because it was a great deal, but damn I wish I had seen the Target one. Only bad thing is that the nearest Target is about an hour away, and they don't seem to ship.
