Fucking lol'd at the Destructoid video. Pretty embarrassing there isn't any safety guard to prevent the disc leaving the spindle (Not bragging other consoles feature this, besides the legacy consoles which used lock spindles). But we're in 2010 ffs, its a matter of pennies & dimes to have a locking mechanism for the media.

It's not a slot loading drive. What the fuck do you guys expect? Is common sense a fucking superpower now? Even slot loading drives do this from time to time, and if there's a jam or a failure to eject the disc you have to send your PS3/Macbook back to the factory to get the disk pulled out, or void your warranty. I get to take a push pin and pop the tray open. Its preference and there's a backup way to get stuff out.

I remember my ps1 falling from a idk ~3-4ft cabinet, landed turned upside down and still played the disc. I had time to save and get off my lazy ass to pick it up.

Years later, at my friend's house his nephew comes into his room jumping like a maniac and ruins my Tekken:Tag copy in his ps2. I always move my ps3 while playing near the AC vent to avoid "heating" problems. Glad this isn't an issue anymore.

my PS1 fell about the same height, and well the console suffered damages but, I ended up having to play all my games with the console upside down, just so the top lid would stay closed and the console would proceed to load the game.

Other then that it was still good no big issues with anything.

My XBox got the RROD. My friend had an aftermarket Fan that you plug into the back. Plugged it in, XBox turn on fine. Took it off still fine 2+ years later. Same thing happed with one of our other friends Xbox.

Got this xbox today, and I must say...... it still is very sexy in person.

I actually forgot it was on, because it is so quiet.

Power brick is extremely light, but its still a brick about the same size......

Havent played any games on it yet, mainly transferring data.

Yeah, I got a chance to mess around with one a few weeks ago at work, they are fantastic. I just avoided mentioning it because of the inevitable shit storm, they are really light and are quiet as hell. Got one for my daughter 2 weeks ago, I need to swap mine out for the new model here soon.

I cant wait to hear abut the first red dot of death. Though it would be nice if they came close to fixing that issue.

New 360 from what I read sports a single larger fan rather than dual-fans in prior models.

Funny thing is, new model can't RRoD, it's got no red LEDs for the rings, but rather it has a red dot that lights up in the center of it all, so I guess if these things are failure prone also the RRoD term will be changed to RDot.....lol.

A bit disappointed that it has an external power brick though. Those thing are annoying as shit, especially if the cord isn't long enough to reach the floor and instead you get this nice weighted brick needing to be secured to something...

I take it they replaced the typical DVD-ROM drives they used on older models? I've read reports that it no longer makes that loud 'chunking' sound as the laser seeks across the disc that I get on my bro's 360 elite all the time.

Anyone have a link to the spec sheet for the redesigned unit? I'm wondering if they did a die shrink on the CPU..

CPU/GPU are 45nm compared to 65nm on the older 360s. I'd hate to know the yield rate if they tried to go smaller than that.

They not only did a die shrink to 45nm, but consolidated the CPU and GPU to a single die as well.

Anyone can take a hammer and rib-spreader to a new piece of hardware. But it takes someone like Anand Shimpi, the man behind Anandtech who has personally suffered through four out-of-warranty Xbox 360 failures, to bring sage analysis to a teardown of the new Xbox 360. His reluctant sixth Xbox 360 is the new slimster (codename Valhalla) which, for the first time, combines the CPU, GPU, and eDRAM onto a single chip -- previous Xbox 360 motherboards featured two discrete packages that split the CPU from the ATI designed Xenos GPU and eDRAM. The design allows for a single heatsink to be cooled by a single, larger fan making the new Xbox "noticeably quieter," measured at 45dB when idle or 51dB with the 1.5Gbps SATA Hitachi HTS545025B9SA00 with 8MB buffer spinning at 5400RPM -- that's down from 50dB and 54dB, respectively, as measured on late 2008 through 2010 Jasper-class 360s. Regarding power consumption, Anand measured a 50% reduction from the original 2005 Xbox 360 (25% less than Jasper-class rigs at idle, or 20% to 17% less under load) and pulled just 0.6W when "totally off" compared to the 2W of vampire power pulled by older 360s. Anand speculates that Microsoft might finally be using cheaper 40nm components. However, we shouldn't expect to see a price cut anytime soon as it will take Microsoft awhile to ramp up the material and manfucaturing cost savings. Regardless, with Kinect and several new game titles on the horizon, Anand concludes that there's still pleny of life left in the old Xbox 360 platform for those looking to make the jump.
