I recently got some very interesting results. I built another computer, mostly used parts, but I did buy a new video card for it. ATI 5770. On low, i scored 1738 but on high, I scored a 1788. My monitor can only do 1440x900 so I loaded up my computer and took it to my brother's house, hooked it up to his Sony TV so I could do the High test.

At home, I use 2 monitors, so i was able to watch my temp's and loads on the other screen while I ran the benchmark. On low, Vid card load never got higher than 32%.

It is because due to the limitations of your motherboard's full speed bus, it's bottle necked so it's only utilizing like 33% of your card. You will never get it to go higher, however game will likely still be playable. All depends on how much GPU power you need at a moment in time of playing the game. If it needs more than that 33% that you're able to get you will definitely see weird things happen.

Definitely recommend an upgrade whenever your wallet allows it

Lower than I expected, but I've got lots of overclocking room on both of these components.
That's a bit disappointing. Though I'll wait until what your overclocking numbers say before making a final judgement on a GTX 460 purchase.

Do you still use the 260 sruon? Is it OC'd? I'm interested because I have the same card and wondering if a CPU upgrade on my part will have enough impact on the game's performance. Is the i7 950 is what you use? (Celeras' list says i5, but it's probably a typo).

Guess I'll see when you post the screenshot.

    Those XP/Win7x64 scores are... interesting.

I'm getting 4320 on Low, and 2590 on High with a ATI 4890
What kind of of score would I be getting if I upgraded to a GTX 460?

Just want something that'll keep me from getting hammered in XIV until December so I can build a new computer then.

    ***EDIT***
    CPU is Q6600 @ 3.4

I assume the 1GB version would also show a moderate increase from these numbers as well.

I'm guessing a GTX460 would score somewhere in the range of 3200-3600 everything else being the same since the GTX470 is scoring roughly 4200 points with more CPU power (based off the rankings on the 1st page). The nice thing would be that you could add another 460 when you are ready and at that point you could be over the 5000 range, I'm assuming there will be crossfire/sli support

i5 750, and it's a GTX295 but in single GPU mode so it's /basically/ a GTX260 (they give me really similar score in single GPU)

As for the XP/Win... that was expected... I'm still benching to see if my drivers crash or not but if they don't, doubt I'm going back.

Running the bench right now for SS.

    Edit: even better, 6920

Old one for comparaison sake, the GTX260 on that one was actually clocked higher than what my 295 is at right now.

The 1GB version shows a mild increase over the 768MB version and can do things the 768MB version cannot such as running Crysis Warhead at 2560x1600... which isn't really a big deal because if you're gaming at 2560x1600, you're not looking at the 460 anyway.

I'm exchanging mine since I read on oc.net that a guy got 965 on air with the stock voltage cap of 1.087(I can barely get 910).

Maybe old but this is a nice bench:

So the only thing that changed here was the OS? Driver revisions were kept the same between both operating systems? Both results are for the 720p version of the benchmark?

I didn't really want to go through the effort as I thought the days of XP being grossly faster were over but I guess I will benchmark Windows XP 32-bit, Windows XP x64, and Windows 7 64-bit on my build tonight with all settings on stock and the same driver revisions across all 3 operating systems.

32-bit result is going to be gimped because my video card has 2GB of RAM in it which immediately reduces the 4GB of usable memory in 32-bit XP to 2GB, plus whatever else is going to get shaved off for hardware memory mapping. XP x64 should shine, though. I've always had good luck with XP x64 despite the masses complaining about it. WOW64 mode was always nearly identical to native 32-bit performance.

But it doesn't really make sense. If you can get 6920 (2nd highest score on Celeras' list) with close to the equivalent of a single GTX260, then GPU doesn't matter shit in XIV at least on 720p. I mean, you just beat the scores of people that have 5850/5870's.

With the 6920 score screenshot, is that i5 at stock Ghz? Or does it just not show up right? I noticed in that other SS you had it at 3.5Ghz.

More importantly, how does beta play for you and at what resolution?

Thanks, I appreciate it. XP score should be even higher then.

The driver revisions are the same and yes the GPU hardly matters for 720p

The CPU is at the exact same speed, 3.5 Ghz

As for the beta experience, it's pretty much capped FPS everywhere on Windows 7 so the difference is going to be abyssmal when I try on XP. Until they (if they do) raise FPS cap. (Edit: I play in 1024x768, FFXIV isn't a deciding factor for me as far as hardware go but I play FPS games @ 800x600 or 1024x768 @ 100 hz and can't really get rid of my CRT.)

As for the difference between both, as I said, I really expected it because ever since Vista was released I've had shittier experience with anything that wasn't XP.

    I could pop my GTX260 if people really wanted but I use it in my FFXI build and would rather not take it out ;-;

That's negligible and in line with what I would expect. I was referencing sruon's post:

He makes it sound like he got a score of 4800 on Windows 7 64-bit while getting 6600 on Windows XP with the same build. If so, that's a 37.5% improvement just by using XP which should not be the case.

Just did it in high: 2884, 2500ish on 7. Bout the same as what you've got.

That's exactly what I'm saying, really I could try with the GTX260 for perfect accuracy but benchmark with GTX295 on 7 gave me around same score as 260.

No, that's alright, not needed. Thanks for the info. The funny thing here is, SE recommends a GTX460 or higher for 720p:

    http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/recom/na/pc.html

And from what we can see from the benchmark, it doesn't make much difference if you have a GTX260 or GTX460 or HD5870. It's only the raw CPU speed and several cores that make a difference (at that resolution).

So, either the benchmark is not representative for the in-game performance. Or SE's recommended specs are a bit misleading.

is that score on 7 with or without aero enabled?

that's a huge jump but aero is also known to cause a moderate score dip depending on videocard model.

I assume your nvidia driver revision has changed as well between tests?
