    CF - 26 FPS (same place)

    Performce increase is similar to the increase I saw in Benchmark when I used CF hack.
    Is there an hack to let my HD5970 work with both GPU during the playtime on beta?

    I'm having the most god-awful time trying to get the Benchmark to run. I get the d3dx9_41.dll is missing error, so I go and download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer but that also gives me an error (An internal system error occurred). Any ideas? ('-' *)

    Also updated my graphics card driver.

    I have CF working without any mods since start of beta (used both CCC 10.4 and 10.7). CCC AI is on (doesn't seem to matter which setting). 10.4 or 10.7 profiles work as well (can you use higher profiles version with lower a CCC?)

    So when I get the error from downloading the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer it directs me to the logs.

    This is it if it helps. ;x

    Here are some performance results from the beta for the following system:

    i7 860 2.8GHz (stock)
    8GB DDR3-1600
    Sapphire TOXIC 2GB 5870 (925 core / 1225 memory, stock settings for this card)
    Dell U2711 2560x1440 Display
    Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
    Catalyst 10.7 drivers

    The above scores approximately 4950 in the official FFXIV benchmark without any tweaking.

    These results were obtained by running the same 6-minute path through Limsa Lominsa for each test. Yeah, it's not perfect but it's the best I can at the moment. MSI Afterburner and the Windows native performance monitoring tools were used to generate CSV files which I then munged into usable data via perl.

    Each tweakable option was tested separately with all other settings on default except for the final benchmark where multiple options were tweaked simultaneously.

    #================================================= =
    Window Size ---- 2560x1440
    Multisampling -- 1Sample
    Buffer Size --- Window Size
    Shadow Detail -- Standard
    AO ------------- Off
    DoF ------------ Off

    avg cpu: 15.8%
    avg gpu temp = 63.8
    avg gpu usage = 34.3
    avg fan_speed = 43.0
    avg framerate = 29.3

    Observations: With everything at default, the game is very zippy.

    #================================================= =
    Window Size ---- 2560x1440
    Multisampling -- 2Sample
    Buffer Size --- Window Size
    Shadow Detail -- Standard

    avg cpu: 15.9%
    avg gpu temp = 64.4
    avg gpu usage = 35.6
    avg fan_speed = 44.1
    avg framerate = 29.4

    Observations: No appreciable change from default to Multi-sample 2x.

    #================================================= =
    Window Size ---- 2560x1440
    Multisampling -- 8Sample
    Buffer Size --- Window Size
    Shadow Detail -- Standard
    AO ------------- Off
    DoF ------------ Off

    avg cpu: 15.6%
    avg gpu temp = 63.6
    avg gpu usage = 37.9
    avg fan_speed = 42.6
    avg framerate = 29.6

    Observations: No appreciable change (~3.5% increase in GPU use from defaults)

    #================================================= =
    Window Size ---- 2560x1440
    Multisampling -- 1Sample
    Buffer Size --- Double
    Shadow Detail -- Standard
    AO ------------- Off
    DoF ------------ Off

    avg cpu: 14.7%
    avg gpu temp = 75.8
    avg gpu usage = 93.7
    avg fan_speed = 60.5
    avg framerate = 28.0

    Observations: Despite the framerate, the game definitely feels more sluggish. GPU usage is way up and CPU usage is down marginally - the beginnings of a GPU bottleneck.

    #================================================= =
    Window Size ---- 2560x1440
    Multisampling -- 1Sample
    Buffer Size ---- Window
    Shadow Detail -- Highest
    AO ------------- Off
    DoF ------------ Off

    avg cpu = 15.2%
    avg gpu temp = 63.8
    avg gpu usage = 37.9
    avg fan_speed = 42.9
    avg framerate = 29.5

    Observations: No appreciable change (~3.6% increase in GPU use from defaults)

    #================================================= =
    Window Size ---- 2560x1440
    Multisampling -- 1Sample
    Buffer Size ---- Window
    Shadow Detail -- Standard
    AO ------------- On
    DoF ------------ Off

    avg cpu = 11.0%
    avg gpu temp = 69.6
    avg gpu usage = 98.5
    avg fan_speed = 48.6
    avg framerate = 17.8

    Observations: Ouch. CPU usage down, framerate down, GPU usage maxxed. Hello GPU bottleneck. The game feels extremely sluggish. I'd consider it unplayable at this setting. My personal opinion of AO is that it's worthless - it just makes things look "darker". Whether you think it looks good or not, it's a massive performance hit.

    #================================================= =
    Window Size ---- 2560x1440
    Multisampling -- 1Sample
    Buffer Size ---- Window
    Shadow Detail -- Standard
    AO ------------- Off
    DoF ------------ On

    avg cpu = 18.0%
    avg gpu temp = 67.8
    avg gpu usage = 56.5
    avg fan_speed = 46.9
    avg framerate = 29.2

    Observations: CPU usage up less than 3%, GPU usage up ~22%, framerate still good. No difference in responsiveness.

    #================================================= =
    Based on the above, my personal preferences for running FFXIV are:

    Multisampling -- 8Sample
    Buffer Size ---- Window
    Shadow Detail -- Highest
    AO ------------- Off
    DoF ------------ On

    avg cpu = 18.6%
    avg gpu temp = 70.1
    avg gpu usage = 63.8
    avg fan_speed = 51.0
    avg framerate = 29.1

    34.3% (default settings) + 22.2% (FoV) + 3.5% (8x multi-sampling) + 3.6% (highest shadows) = 63.5% GPU usage. That matches very closely to the observed 63.8% in the final benchmark.

    Make of this info what you will.

    Well disregard my last couple posts... I'm going to assume that it's working because I registered Windupe 7 Ultimate (just built a new system), and not because I was actively persistent.

    i7 930
    GTX 470
    6GB Memory

    Haven't done any overclocking yet, but here is the benchmark:

    Thanks for the awesome testing Alecrast, this would help me and a lot of people in determining systems and also which settings. When you OC your system, could you do the test again?

    I can, but with the 30fps cap, it would be of limited usefulness. I think that the GPU hogging features (buffer size double and AO on) are not something that can be overcome with an overclock.

    I'm trying hard to fight the urge to buy another 5870 as I'd rather switch back to NVIDIA once they do a GPU refresh but it's tempting to see how it would affect performance. If there wasn't a FPS cap, I'd probably do it.

    Can you explain why there is the 30FPS cap SE puts on their games? Is there a chance they'll remove it?

    Were you planning on CF'ing the 2 5870's? You know you can probably return the card within 2 weeks or something at your local store

    Maybe I can get 2 5850's CF instead of 1 for my system. Still expensive

    Were you planning on CF'ing the 2 5870's? You know you can probably return the card within 2 weeks or something at your local store

    Maybe I can get 2 5850's CF instead of 1 for my system. Still expensive
    I was considering it. Unfortunately, everyone is out of stock on the Sapphire 5870 that I have. I could by the non-TOXIC edition which is still 2GB and have the Vapor-X cooler but I don't want to drop another $500 with refreshes just a few months out. I'm holding my breath that NVIDIA will give us something compelling.

    The only reason I can see for a 30fps cap is if the game's FPS is unstable and they want to prevent "rubber banding" performance. Other than that, I can't really explain it.

    Hey do you know what program can monitor cpu usage other than task manager, the rivatuner can't monitor that and my current card doesn't have GPU load.

    So I just want to monitor CPU usage.

    I upgraded my system last week, stepped up to an i7 930 from a Q6600. system right now is:

    Core i7-930 @3.4ghz
    EVGA X58 Tri-SLI mobo
    6GB OCZ DDR3 1600
    GTX 260 Core 216

    The graphics card is a carry over, but I have a second 260 coming for SLI, so hopefully SLI is supported in retail. Here are my scores.

    Well it was tied to character movement in ff11 which is why that had it, if you could somehow increase your fps in 11 you were flee hacking. I have no clue why it's like that in 14 though. You would think they wouldn't make the same mistake.

    Would be nice if afterburner had the ability to put core usage in the osd... and temps while I'm being greedy. :D

    Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Performance Monitor

    There's tons of stuff you can find in there though the interface is kind of non-intuitive.

    Tying movement to framerate is just an awful idea, though. What if the person's framerate dips below 30fps? Do they run slower? (rhetorical question is rhetorical) It's just an awful way to go about things, trying to tie in-game behavior to an external variable like framerate.

    Rivatuner, which afterburner is written off of, does both. Afterburner will never be capable of this without plugin support, which it'll probably never have implemented.

    it was also an artifact of NTSC encoding for the (original) ps2 version of the game - why they had that as part of the hardcoded graphics logic I have no idea though.

    which is why the fps cap was actually something like 29.95 or so. (which is why even with pegged frames you still got massive vertical tearing.)

    for FFXIV it was probably to mask how heavily unoptimized the engine is - no clue if they'll uncap it.
