I was able to overclock my Q6600 in my Dell to 3.0 from 2.4 by getting the processor out and doing the pin mod trick. (couldn't overclock past 2.65 conventionally because of stupid Dell)

Was able to boost my score from a 3400 on low to a 4111. I have a new HD 5850 on the way also, so hopefully that will give me a big boost. (have 5770 now).

I'm moderate at best with computers, that's why I'm asking about windows and ram. I have a couple friends in my MMO guilds that help me with parts, along with my uncle.

I had a duo 2.4 or something and a geforce8800 gts with 4 gb of ram, and I just intended to replace the processor. Bought a duo core 3.2 for 99 bucks that I thought could just slip into place. Didn't work that way so I just said F it and went with the amd black and everything else needed because my motherboard runs intel. It started with me just making a high end video card purchase though and then realizing my processor was holding me back. I just wanted to plug the technology hole for a couple of years but it turned into me buying parts. I hadn't really bought parts for years. But with my video card if this game continues to push the limit and 6 cores are desired over faster 4 cores I hopefully have a motherboard and videocard+ram that can support it. That way in 2-3 years I can just give the processor away and just buy one part.

I don't think windows 7 will really do better than XP or vice versa. Personally I tried Win7 x86 vs x64 and there was no difference despite having less ram in the 32 bit version.

I know I get a slight score boost when I go into the system properties in Windows 7 and click the ' for best performance' box instead of the 'for best appearance' box. Turns off Aero and some other stuff.

figured as much it was mainly for day to day things though if you do a system wipe because of it that could help.

Anyone notice a difference then between 4 gb of ddr3 ram vs 8 ? might pick up 4 for 97 bucks just because it's going to be the standard and the new intel chips use it.

I know It's not the same ram. But my system is Dual boot w/ Vista 32bit and Windows 7 64bit.
My 32bit Vista will benchmark on High at 3060 (Only reads 4 gig of DDR2 1066)
My 64bit Win 7 benchmarks on High at 3222 (Reading all 8 gig of DDR2 1066)

I know 2 different OS's but but you can see the gain between 32bit and 64bit. Its not much of a gain, but it is there.

Crossing my fingers for a 4000+ score.
If you don't overclock you're not gonna get more than 3500 (on high) with that. My PC is similiar except I have an i7 cpu overclocked to 3.8Ghz and I can't get 4000, I got 3900 once, other times I have gotten only 3700, seems to vary every time, but it's always between 3700-3900

Other than my cpu everything is the same as yours (different brands, but same specs)

I have a Phenom IIx4 965 and a 5850 and get 3800-3900 on high with stock settings. I have a screen shot somewhere in the thread.

I'm planning on getting the following and I'm wondering if it's compatible and if its worth it.

    Intel Core i5 760
    MSI P55-GD55
Zotac GeForce GTX 470 AMP (What's the difference between AMP or not AMP? Does the brand matter? Like Zotac, EVGA, ASUS)
    Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 7-8-7-20 Core i5 Dual Channel Memory Kit
(Not sure what the 4 number after CL means, higher the better? or lower?)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W ATX 20/24PIN

    Total: $800

    Are they compatible?

AMP is just Zotacs overclocked card using a Zalman VF3000F cooler instead of stock.

The four numbers after CL are the RAM timing. Lower is generally better, but it also depends on the frequency.

Mine will be similar to yours, GTX460 and a Phenom IIx4 955 but im planning to OC it to 3.6~ ghz on stock since that's easily doable.

I've heard some pretty negative things about the OCZ ModXStream PSU brand, might be nothing though. However if you plan on overclocking and depending on how many optical drives you have as well as added HDDs etc that PSU may not be enough to do what you want. I'd suggest 700-800W to give you some breathing room and to help future-proof a bit for when you want to upgrade other parts.

ModXStream is decent, it's the StealthXStream line that is sub par.

I have the OCZ Fatal1ty 550w which is very similar to the ModXStream 600w (same 12v amps) and it doesn't even warm up with a GTX 470 at full load.

New fan + heatsink came in the mail yesterday. Had a go installing it, and those stupid push pins are such a bitch to install. Had to pull the motherboard out to get them in just right. After that, I ended up running the benchmark again just to give the CPU some stress. Under load it kept cool, 50C~, and now idle it's between 38-41C(no more 100C x.x). Benchmark score also went up 200 points with the new heatsink, so it looks like a good investment.

I'm content with my 3506 low with an asus g73jh, but my load time is irritating me. I just installed an intel 80gb ssd and load times are still ~25000. Anyone have any clue why this might be? (superfetch/indexing/defraging disabled, windows score of 7.7, trim enabled)

Should I go with the 5850 or the 5870? Is the 5870 really worth it over the 5850? I won't be overclocking mind you, atleast not for awhile until I figure out what i'm doing. I'm also running dual monitors. Will the 5850 be able to run them np?

Just go by the chart on the first page to compare. Multiple processors have 5850 and 5870 graphics card users and generally the user with the 5870 is roughly 600+ points higher. But the 5850s are still around 3900 on high with the 750/930 cpus
