Fuck Vsync in MMOs. It solves tearing by forcing a rule that says the back buffer can't copy to the frame buffer until right after the monitor refreshes. With a framerate higher than the refresh rate, this works fine. IE: 100 FPS on a 60Hz monitor, you'll be restricted to 60FPS but won't have any tearing. But when you get into a graphically intense area and say.. your FPS drops to the 40s(Hi Aetheryte), its going to hurt. Instead of getting FPS in the 40s, you'll end up significantly lower. It's less evident with triple-buffering Vsync, but the performance hit is still there.
Personally, I find the best way to reduce tearing is to just crank up your settings and make it so your FPS is around 60 naturally. And trust me, FFXIV has plenty of shit to tank your FPS if you're seeing tears.
Yeah, thats what I have learned to do recently, if I'm getting a little too much fps in a game I'll force everything I can on to get it closer to 60. For old ass or weak games I just turn vsync on. But I was curious if any of you actually had those $500 120hz monitors.
BTW can you enable triple buffer vsync within CCC for an ATI card? Within most games I rarely see a triple buffering option. Or does it have to be programmed within the game? I'm looking at CCC right now and it has a triple buffer checkbox but it says its for OpenGL, so I assume it doesn't work with Direct3D which most games are...
nVidia has an option for Triple Buffering and forcing vsync, I don't know about ATI. I've only ever used it for WoW pre-wotlk, because there was no way in hell I could force my FPS down and teared like a motherfucker.
Thanks Kylewhataru & Cooleko for the responses, you were both right. The sound issue was fixed with re-installing the drivers that came with the MB.
As far as the OC goes, lowering the FSB clock did fix the restart issue but now i'm perplexed about the whole thing xD.
I was so focused on hitting the max stable OC on prime that I didn't even pay attention to it not working correctly during resets. So here's the scenario: the max stable OC I found for my particular board/cpu was 415mhz w/ 8.0 multiplier Vcore: 1.30v (ran prime95 for ~30hrs and it had 0 errors/warnings). 416mhz+ would crash in P95 in less than a minute(even adjusting timmings on RAM and voltages for NB, FSB, RAM, Vcore). Temps are in a comfortable spot I think, 39C idle, 52C at load, Max temp was 64C during the P95 test.
Anyhow lowering the FSB to 413mhz fixed the Ctrl+Alt+Del reset but windows didn't work until I lowered it to 411mhz. Everything is working now perfectly running Prime atm to see if the FSB is fully stable.
In short you guys where right and thanks a lot. :D
don't think the chart is still being updated but anyways:

So yea, back to my original question. Anywhere I could shave off about 300-400$ from the hardware without losing too much computing capacity?
Most appreciated.
That will not play ff14 well at all.

If you have to have a laptop, try http://sagernotebook.com/ instead.
Any speculation or word to if dual gpu/dual cards are going to be fully implemented at retail? Wouldn't want others to made a bad decision on their investment of say 2 460's because of it's cost benefit if they will only get the performance of one.
Has anyone been able to get a green S/R connection ingame yet? All the beta photos have yellow connections. I hope SE is working on that, going to be funny if the servers explode on sept 23.
yea I get green all the time!
I don't mean constantly, just a lot. I even had green in LL earlier today. Almost always yellow around bearded rock.
Any other ATI users having intermittent fps drops in Limsa Lominsa? I thought someone said the issue was addressed so just checking to see if it's me since I didn't play phase2 after buying this card.
