I'm positive that it has to do with coding of some type on SE's end. A 5970 is essentially two 5850's in CF. Thats why when you have two 5970's its Quadfire. In every other game, if I have AI disabled, I can notice a big hit in FPS. But for some reason in FFXIV its the opposite. Oh well. I'm sure that either SE or ATI will fix this in the next couple of months.

Been following this thread specifically for awhile, but finally registered. I had crossfire in closed beta 3 working with my 2 4870's using the program radeonpro, linked to and discussed by a guy on the beta forums. Either open beta or the new ati drivers broke that fix for me. However, from FFXIVcore, I did this and it works

    CrossFireX with Beta

    1. Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
    2. Right Click "Command Prompt" then select "Run as administrator"
    3. cd "\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version"
    4. rename ffxivgame.exe 3DMark06.exe
    5. mklink ffxivgame.exe 3DMark06.exe

    Notes:
    - Windows 32-bit path will be: "\Program Files\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version"
    - NVIDIA users use Crysis.exe instead of 3DMark06.exe
    - Remove link then rename 3DMark06.exe back to ffxivgame.exe when you need to apply a update.
    - CrossFireX only works in full screen mode."

My average field framerate goes from 40 to capped 60 when both cards are correctly working. The two cards would "work" without a fix, but hit the usual 50% load ceiling and using 1 card was better. In town my framerate barely changes with CF enabled and my load drops to almost nothing, I'm not sure why the game works like that...I get that all the people probably hits the cpu more, but I average 20 around really large crowds in any town and my gpu load is barely existent. Hope this helps!

I understand everything up to mklink how is this done. Everytime I try this is gives me an error telling me cannot find file "ffxivgame.exe"

It's just making a shortcut that points to the renamed file instead. You're renaming it right? And then typing the mlink line in the correct order? It shouldn't be looking for ffxivgame.exe at all, it's making the shortcut and will name it that and it's looking to link it to the second phrase after the command, i.e. "3dmark06.exe".

There's not much to type, should work fine as long as you're in the right folder. I don't think any of those commands would be in certain versions of this... Did you change directories ok? You're in the folder with all the .exe's?

You can just rename the game.exe in your directory to 3DMark06.exe and maybe even make a completely regular shortcut for the that and just rename the shortcut to ffxivgame.exe. Try that, it makes sense, I just saw it listed this way and did it how it was explained until I thought about what I was really doing.

nope still not working for me my 5970 wont go above 55% on either card resulting in worse performance than using a single card. This is crappy. An $800 card that performs worse than a $300 one.

That happens if you buy a card with 2 GPUs :3 Better 1 5870 now and another when its necessary.

Obviously not utilizing CF correctly.
I just got another MSI 5870 Lightning and set up CF yesterday. Your observations are exactly the same as mine, previously when I was using a single 5870, i get slightly higher fps & the cpu usage rate goes up to 99% constantly.

Should I be concerned that my Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X card is hitting 77-78* celcius in FF14? These cards are touted as being way more energy efficient and that they have lower temps than Nvidia cards but it doesn't seem like it runs as cool as I was expecting. I have a thermaltake case with typical air cooling. Rear exhaust fan, intake fans, and a 200mm window case fan. Just making sure I'm not going to end up frying this bitch come release time.

If you are nvidia please do not hack it with the butcher job above, Nvidia already has a profile just correct the mistake (they named the exe in the profile ffxivwin.exe but it should be ffxivgame.exe).

also, ffxi will run your cards at 100% until it hits the 60fps cap, only then will your fans not need to be at 100% to compensate.

I have the same card and it doesn't go over 65º with highest settings at 1920x1200 8xQ MSAA minus AO. It's OC'd to 940/1290
