Yeah it's definitely not just a CPU issue. I mean yeah I'm only running my I7 at 3.6but even people with oc's of 4.0 have very similar issues. Oh well it's only in towns and crystals. No action happenin there anyways! Thanks for the reply's.

It is cpu, get some phase change cooling and crank your cpu up to 5ghz if you want better performance. The graphics workload for cpu is done primarily on two threads. Cpu usage % doesn't have to be 90% for it to be a cpu bottleneck.

And yes I did do all the common tweaks out there to enable SLI with it, and I can see it using both GPUs, but there is very little performance difference, and the small difference I notice may just be in my head/placebo.
You must be blind, I have two SLI 480 and there is a huge difference between max settings +AO for 60fps vs 20.

Is anyone with an AMD CPU getting at least tolerable performance in cities/camps? Sadly I'm stuck with my AM3 mobo for now, so I suppose a Phenom II x4 is the very best I can get. I currently have an Athlon II x3 @3.3 Ghz, and debating wheter I should just endure with that until I can afford an Intel system, or AMD pulls out some magic for AM3.

Athlon II x3 -> Phenom II isn't a very hot upgrade path normally, but maybe the L2 and L3 caches make a big difference in this game?

you will get a performance increase from the extra cores. Even 5 and 6 cores helps some with this game.

I dont think the diff in AO is worth it though, its so minimal and requires so much more gpu power

It may be partly to do with a CPU bottleneck but that is due to the poor coding to use the CPU to its fullest extent on SE's end. I do not believe that one should have to OC the CPU to crazy speeds and purchase a $1000 vapor cooler to achieve better performance in areas that clearly do not use the GPU properly. But oh well. I am loving this game aside from the 35-45 FPS I get in towns and crystals. But as I said the action is out in the field and that is at a constant 60 FPS for me.

Yeah I'm blind because two fraps in-game benchmarks return the exact same results (within margin of error) despite SLI being on or not. Do you have a fraps benchmark showing the difference? I want to see cold hard numbers, nobody has been able to provide them. Just glancing at an fps counter while you're playing is NOT proper testing.

I agree, they did a shitty job deciding to put so much gfx workload on the cpu

Yeah hopefully future optimizations patches fix this issue up a bit

    Get fraps http://www.fraps.com/download.php

The free trial should let you benchmark without having to buy it. When it's installed go to the "FPS" tab and set up a "benchmarking hotkey" put a check only on "minmaxavg". Then in FF14 press that hotkey to get the test started, run around for 5-10 minutes, press hotkey again to end the benchmark. Then turn off sli restart FF14 and run around in the exact same area another 5 minutes, post the results of both benchmarks here (they are saved in a .csv file in C:\Fraps\Benchmark)

It will look something like this:

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
    1936, 32317, 55, 63, 59.907
Do it in an area that is populated enough to cause frame rates to go below 60 (no point in doing it in an open field, anyone can get 60fps there) even taking into account the possibility of running into more people in one benchmark over the other, the SLI one should still be considerably higher.

I want to see screen shots with fraps running showing anyone getting any where near 60 fps in populated towns and crystals. Unless you have a foolishly oc'd CPU I don't think anyone is going to get more than 45 fps in highly populated areas. I think it's poor coding on se's end

45 is pretty amazing in highly populated area such as leve counter or aetherite's that have massive ppl. I hover around 30-35 in those areas

I agree. I get about the same as you. I just find it funny when ppl say they get a constant 60 fps everywhere. VERY hard to believe.

I have been following this thread closely. No one claims 60 everywhere. Closest you get are people like me who have $5000 computers. And yes we get FPS that put lesser PCs to shame (It is why I have to put AO on to prevent screen tearing). when I get in from work I'll run fraps as requested.

I dont think even that sort of computer would give better results then what I am.

    gtx480x2
    965 @ 3.9.

Yeah, I could build a water system for my comp to push my GPU's & CPU higher, but I don't even think GPU OC'ing matters since what throttles everyone is the CPU load. Putting on AO pushes my GPU's to 80-99% most of the time, but w/it off they very rarely even hit 60-70% load. And w/e I'm not getting 60fps they are about 30-45% because its not on their end. I'm sure a 985X gives better performance then a 965 at same mhz, but I'm not gonna drop 1k on a new CPU when mine is alrdy up there.

One thing I don't understand is this. I like DoF, but i turn it off because, while I get 60fps in the field np on low loads, around crystals and very high populated areas it cuts out a few fps. And DoF should be a pure GPU issue and not affect the CPU, but it seems like every extra feature you add on cuts down overall fps in highly populated areas.

Guess I stand semi corrected. 980x @4.6, 480 hydro coppers equally oc. Results are same Perhaps you should try this on lesser hardware? because 480's arent even dented. Max settings AO on.

    Min, Max, Avg
    38, 61, 53.708

    Min, Max, Avg
    39, 61, 56.056

Tests performed at Tranquil camp aetheryte.

When I get my 295 back in ill rerun the tests and see how it holds up.
