The only time I got any real slowdown was during the meteorite scene. That must be a beastly scene to run. However I still scored far under 4k - so I am pissed.
So from what I'm seeing, I should get a decent score if I'm going to buy a system soon with a i7 930 and a Nvidia 480 right? Also, are people with scores in the 5k range getting smooth framerates? Can we track framerates too?
I think its safe to assume that anyone who got over 5k was doing at least 60FPS.
Ya?
Ugh now I gotta go find Fraps.
Exactly. Hopefully when they add in the graphics options they'll allow us to uncap the FPS. That would be pretty nice.
Edit: Just ran it and was averaging about FPS stayed around 80ish for the most part. A few highs of 120ish and split second lows of 65ish.
5131 on the 1920x1080 high-res test:

Done with a Core i7 860 @ 2.8GHz on a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD7 motherboard, 8GB DDR3-1600 (7-8-7-24-2T), and Sapphire 5870 2GB Toxic edition card with 10.5 Catalysts. The only CPU tweak so far was to disable hyperthreading. My desktop resolution was 2560x1600 and Aero was turned on. I've seen some people claim that, with Aero off, they're getting plus 100 to 200 on their scores. Guess I will find out later. I'm done benching for the night.
My score went up by about 200 after I turned off aero. I ran fraps and was getting 50-70 FPS, with the occasional drop to 40 and the occasional increase to 80-90. 5000 points is definitely going to be higher than 60 FPS.

The scene isn't really relevant at all to the benchmark score, it's just something pretty to watch while you wait. Even people with crazy low scores will see the scene pretty much unaffected, after all the game isn't running connected to anything or with other players, or anything at all.
As for frame rate, I don't even like how things look past 30fps most of the time, I think I will cap my FPS if I play on PC, things start to look a little weird at high FPS imo, especially on the PC and with MMOs when the FPS is going all over the place. I'd much rather have it run at a solid 30fps without fluctuating.
Ahh I see.
What CPU did you get? And add me to the liiiiiiist!
As you probably could tell from the picard.jpg, USB graphics card do not exist (at least I dont think so).
For laptops you are generally stuck with what you get since most cannot be upgraded unless you really know what you are doing.
There is another solution however though you may not like it and I don't know its viability since I have not tried it myself. Look into Vidock2 (requires an express slot or something iirc). If i recall correctly you can then use desktop graphics cards for your laptop, but you will need to run it on another screen. I gave up at this point since I needed my laptop to be mobile and I could bear taking a small box around, another monitor is where I drew the line.
Your best alternative might be to get a new rig. Desktops will give you more bang for your buck but if you're like me and need the mobility, there are decent rigs out there but expect to spend at least $1000 to get a decent frame rate going.
Actually if you want to get technical... Someone recently made a mod to connect a PCI-e card to a laptop using a PCMCIA port. Dude had to jump through hoops of fire to accomplish it though and its not the prettiest site in the world. Was on Engadget a few weeks ago - I'm sure you can find it if you google "PCMCIA video card".
Hmm
Does the Alpha version support SLI?
'Cause I'm just wondering if SE needs to update the benchmark to allow for 2+ GPU's or is it a matter of drivers?

Benchmark on High.
CPU: Q6600 @ 3.42
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR2 4GB, 1:1 divider, 4-4-4-12 timings
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6
GPU: ATI Radeon 5870
HSF: Tuniq Tower 120 w/ Scythe S-Flex (rev. F)
I think I need to graft a fan onto my NB heatsink. I'm fairly sure that I'm being limited by motherboard stability and not the CPU. If I can improve cooling, I can probably bump NB voltage a tad, and hopefully either stabilize the Q6600 with less voltage, or push the FSB higher without too much more voltage. I don't want more than 1.45V before vDroop. The G0s are usually stonking great overclockers, there's no reason I should be dying at 3.42, especially since CPU temp is nowhere near safe ceiling.
Hmm I read the budget hexacores still get outperformed by the lower end i7s. Not by a whole lot though. The AMD build should be cheaper overall at least. I'm assuming that your Q6600's mobo wont let you jump up to an i7.
If you're getting the 1050T for 200ish I'd say just get the i7 930.
Yeah they do, but they overclock like beasts. Reminds of the old duo/quad core conversations back in 2005 or whatever. Quads hit the market, were slower clocked and outperformed by duos.. but OC'd better and were more futureproof. I bought one back then, the same q6600 I'm unloading now, and it lasted me this long. And fast forward a few years, and nobody in their right mind would recommend a duo over a quad. I think history is going to end up repeating itself with these hexas vs. comparable quads.
And the deal is for $160~ Mulling it over.
