As you probably could tell from the picard.jpg, USB graphics card do not exist (at least I dont think so).

For laptops you are generally stuck with what you get since most cannot be upgraded unless you really know what you are doing.

There is another solution however though you may not like it and I don't know its viability since I have not tried it myself. Look into Vidock2 (requires an express slot or something iirc). If i recall correctly you can then use desktop graphics cards for your laptop, but you will need to run it on another screen. I gave up at this point since I needed my laptop to be mobile and I could bear taking a small box around, another monitor is where I drew the line.

Your best alternative might be to get a new rig. Desktops will give you more bang for your buck but if you're like me and need the mobility, there are decent rigs out there but expect to spend at least $1000 to get a decent frame rate going.

Thanks you for the advice, Darte. I will probably just wait for the PS3 beta then rather than spend a ton of money. My laptop can run the benchmark but not very well. I will see if I can maybe get the card upgraded (it's a NVidia card, not an intergrated chip).

Yeah they do, but they overclock like beasts. Reminds of the old duo/quad core conversations back in 2005 or whatever. Quads hit the market, were slower clocked and outperformed by duos.. but OC'd better and were more futureproof. I bought one back then, the same q6600 I'm unloading now, and it lasted me this long. And fast forward a few years, and nobody in their right mind would recommend a duo over a quad. I think history is going to end up repeating itself with these hexas vs. comparable quads.

And the deal is for $160~ Mulling it over.

10.6 Drivers for ATIs have been released. Trying to re-overclock my card now, temps seem insane now though, a good 10~15 degrees hotter at idle for my saphire (master card) and i hit 92 on the bench, reduced clocks to 875/1250 but i thought i had them similar to that before ;;

OC'ed my 5870 found some decent settings to go by from overclockers club. Busted into the 5000s very pleased. But way more than whats needed. lol

Its not that I don't have the tools to resize it. Its just quicker to hit Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S, then Enter, then name, then Enter, than to spend time resizing it. And I'm lazy.

Tanaka: You do need a bit more processing power to use ambient occlusion or see the shadings on the backgrounds, so we’ve made them optional. However, a lot of things now require less processing power than they did in the alpha version. We also used projection shadowing for the alpha build but have now switched to something called depth buffer shadows which creates a much more distinct shadowing effect.

Tanaka: That’s correct. There are settings you will be able to access and adjust from the main menu. For people on the PC version, there will also be a way to adjust your settings before you load the game. Players will be able to judge how their computer will be able to handle FFXIV by using the benchmark software that we recently released.

So beta is a bit more optimized, but it'll have new features that require more processing power. Hmmm.

GPU Overclocks. This isn't going to show as much improvement as others have been able to achieve with GPU overclocks due to the nature of the VRAMs on the Sapphire VaporX cards. Since the only way to change that is to do BIOS editing of your card, I will not include results from that seeing as the average user will not be going to such lengths to get performance. Therefore, these OCs are from using CCC and ATT only.

Looking at a deal for a 1055T. Dunno if Ill end up pulling the trigger or not, either that or an i7. Kinda want the hexacore.

Cel did my research your better off getting an i7 930 or 920, performance wise.

When i get back from Australia (on vacation wooot, missing out on all this ffxiv madness) i am going GTX480 +6gigs more RAM and to 4.0ghz on a Noctua DH-14 should put up some nice numbers for sure!

Pretty easy to figure out which is the bottle neck, if the GPU is running at 99% (use afterburner) then its the GPU thats holding you back.

Overclocked my CPU and got an extra 130 points fwiw.

Dual thread processors will make a big difference aswell.

Done with a mild overclock of my i7 860 from 2.8GHz to 3.7GHz (at stock voltages ). Again, the same Sapphire 5870 2GB Toxic edition card was used for this benchmark. Background resolution is 2560x1600.
