My only concern is my power supply, it is a 585W, these are "low wattage" items so I think I'll be fine. This will be a huge upgrade to what I have now (quad 2.2GHz, slow ass MOBO). I have a Radeon 5670 1GB DDR5, 3 HDDs, 2 USB 2.0, 1 CD rom, and a few molex connected fans. I should be alright with this power supply?

I am completely perplexed on power supply specs and how much you need, i found a chart and added up all the points and only got a 360W that I supposedly "need" but really, i don't know.

Also I just saw that my motherboard specs on the memory is DDR3 1866(OC)/1333/1066 MHz, but the memory i'm thinking about purchasing is 1600, will it be compatible?
585W is plenty for that rig. The only thing I would suggest is a single rail power supply. I tend to favor single rail designs over multiple rail designs because you have access to all the power at any given moment - you don't wind up with power you can't use "trapped" on different 12V rails. I generally stick with PC Power & Cooling or Corsair single-rail models.

As for the DDR-1600, it will function as DDR-1333 or DDR-1066 just fine. You can always take faster RAM and run it at slower standard timings that follow the JEDEC specification. All of the above is assuming the RAM is on your QVL for your motherboard. If it's not on the list, then there is always the chance for an incompatibility but, in practical application, those are relatively few and far between these days. It does happen - it's just relatively rare on any non-tweaker board (I used to swear by eVGA boards but they've become a little too finicky over the last 2 years - had a P55 board that, with a recent BIOS update, would no longer boot with some Gskill memory, got stuck in a C1 - D0 loop or something like that thanks to some changes they made to "support" 1.35v memory).

If you don't have a UPS tha displays your system draw, then you will find a $20 Kill-a-watt extremely enlightening:

    Also, chart here:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...0,2585-15.html

Shows 116W idle consumption peaking at 450W.

YMMV, but it's just something to be aware of for potential buyers that beefy PSUs are needed to drive cutting edge gaming rigs. Also, if you go for some the higher end PSUs, some of them come with racing stripes, which we all know makes everything faster ;D
The videos will show you wattage used "at the wall", meaning the wall socket. Toms is measuring system load, not soley just the GPU. I thought all power consumption tests, whether its on Toms, Anands, bit-tech etc... were measured by the entire system, and not GPU alone.

The Hardocp video is also a bit misleading (they do it frequently, and it's why I never bother with them). Their test set up is on an open system, not in a well ventilated case. By doing that, they've raised the temperature and noise level of the GPU pretty significantly.

I'm still pretty sure that's numbers for the system draw, not just GPU. Unless I completely missed something. Though I have read comments that when used for folding, the GPU can reach near 300w.

I think these cards, at least in SLI, are *capable* of running at 300W or slightly over. Check out the loaded power consumption in Furmark:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/2977/n...h-the-wait-/19

A single GTX480 (and system) is running at 479W. In SLI, that number peaks at a whopping 851W. The difference between the two is 372W. Now what's interesting is that NVIDIA's specifications claim the GTX480 as having a "Maximum Graphics Card Power (W)" of 250 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/product...tx_480_us.html). So either that's TDP they're listing and the draw is actually higher than that (card cooking time) or NVIDIA's (or everyone else's) numbers are just plain wrong. Given that NVIDIA's own site (http://www.slizone.com) recommends a minimum of a 900W power supply for SLI
for the 480GTX, I have to think that NVIDIA's 250W claim is TDP but the card is capable of drawing a lot more. Now if you draw a lot more power than you can dissipate in heat...

In Crysis, the SLI wattage is much lower at 668 which is a lot closer to NVIDIA's 250W claim. I'm on the fence on Furmark since that's the rather nasty benchmark that was cooking cards because they utilized them in ways which ATI claimed were "unlikely" to be encountered in actual usage scenarios. So in "actual usage", these cards might draw 250W while, under theoretical benchmarks, that might be much higher (~120W higher if you take that 851W reading at face value).

You really should have been expecting this. That was my exact setup before upgrading CPU, and I said several times GPU usage was in the low 60's majority of the time.. guess you missed it ;/ Your score is pretty much what I was getting on the board as well.

@480 wattage, it won't break 300W. Maybe slightly at times but that would surprise me.. 392W is an exaggeration. Some of you confused system load with GPU load, others are not factoring in that the CPU will draw more power in an SLI configuration depending on overclock/settings.

Regardless, the mans question has been answered so there's really no need to derail any further and turn this into a tech thread outside the scope of peoples questions/concerns.

To be honest, I was kind of expecting it. What CPU did you upgrade to, and how much of an increase did you see?

1055T. It was between that or an i7, i7 is a little faster overall but i went with the amd processor because their socket(am3) still have new chips coming out. The i7 socket(1366) is at the end of its lifecycle with intels next chips coming for new sockets which would require a new motherboard. So 1055T now + upgrade on same mobo later > i7 now + need new mobo later... in my book anyway. The difference in peformance between the two is insignificant anyway.

Its not installed yet though, ill get to it this weekend and will be sure to share the numbers/biasedly upgrade the chart to reflect my changes (and anybody else with uncommon hardware, just got sick of updating i7/5800 systems by people posting 8 times to make their scores 20pts higher ;p)

    OS: Win XP Pro SP3

Outcome: score barely cracked 350 in Low Rez and even lower on hi rez, therefore SE sez: GTFO n00b... I'm gonna have to retire this machine and build a sexy gamer rig for XIV.

    Current Laptop:
    Gateway NX860X

Outcome: benchmark program crashes when pressing the Run button... if i want XIV mobile, I'm gonna need to save up for a proper gamer laptop.

I just ordered some more cooling power for my CPU, gonna try and work out an OC when it gets here. Been out of the loop for a while, and my benchmark seems quit low.

I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Most tests are at the wall for system power yes. But in the Hardocp test you can see that the system draw at the wall increases from ~175 to ~480. Their set up is quoted as 87% efficient and therefore to multiply by .87 for actual system wattage. (480*.87) - (175*.87) = 265; As you can see there is a difference of at least 265 watts from idle to full load. Again, it's safe to say that the GTX480 is pushing the limit. But meh, furmark is overkill compared to normal gameplay.

What are like... easy names to remember if I want to buy a new desktop that'll be close to top notch for this game? Without you know, spending 10,000$.
I mean in terms of computer parts, vid card, CPU and whatnot.

Assuming you're talking about building your own (you should be) and not buying a brand name...

    Intel i7 930.
A good after-market cooler. I use the Titan Fenrir and it's excellent but there are a handful of high-end coolers that all perform about the same.
Any decent X58 motherboard - which one really depends on what you want to do but a basic one might be a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R or UD5. I would stick to one of Gigabyte, ASUS, or MSI. You don't need the $400 version boards unless you've got very specific needs.
At this point in time, until we see a GTX485 refresh with all shader cores enabled, I'm sticking to recommending a Radeon 5850 or 5870.
6GB DDR3-1600. I tend to stick with Gskill these days but there are plenty of good brands out there.

Anything beyond that is just whatever you can afford... 12GB RAM. Maybe an Intel X25-M (I've got 4 different types of SSDs and the Intel X25-M's just plain work whereas you'll likely be upgrading Indilinx or SandForce firmware more frequently which may or may not entail losing your data). X-Fi audio card. Maybe an Antec 900-2 case which is cheap, quiet, and does a good job on venting heat but may not be aesthetically pleasing depending on your point of view. My only complaint on the 900-2 is the manner in which you access the filters that prevent dust from getting in your system. I have a Silverstone Fortress 02 case and they did it right - the filters are at the bottom of the case and easy to remove for cleaning. Only problem with the FT-02 is that it's expen$ive but it's a hell of a case with a great design for cooling.

With memory, CPU, motherboard, and video card out of the way, I would recommend the Intel X25-M the most. The one component you can put in your system which will change your experience from night to day is an SSD. You'll appreciate how fast Windows 7 boots and how incredibly fast those applications important enough to go on the SSD will load.

Only thing i would change is the Mobo EVGA x58 SLI or FTW3 is a great mobo i am on the x58 SLI LE and i love it, tons of support from the forums on EVGA website and very easy to SLI cards if you need it. But again personal pref i guess on that! everything else is exactly what i would recommend. Get a 750w+ PSU from Corsair or PC power and cooling and your set!

If you wanna save money go AMD 1055T CPU (six core) and an ASUS board talk to Cel (the OP on this thread) he'll help you out i am sure with info on O/Cing and such.

    cheers~Eye
