Im considering getting a new rig now, iv built a few machines in my time and went through the processes before of picking out parts and getting bang for buck etc but iv not done it in so long id rather pay a little more to get a machine that arrives at my door ready to go.

Looking at a machine with these specs / parts. Anyone up with current times and specs can advise if it would be a good buy for the forseable future?

    - Case: Antec 300 Case with Alien Green case fans.
    - Power Supply: OCZ Stealth Stream II 600W
    - CPU: Intel Core i3 530 2.93GHz Clarkdale overclocked to 4.20GHz
    - Motherboard: Gigabyte H55M-UDH2 Intel H55 (Socket 1156) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
    - Cooler: Akasa Venom CPU Cooler
    - RAM: Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
    - Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500BB SATA-II 16MB Cache
    - Graphics Card: XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 AVP Edition 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-E Grapics Card (option here to upgrade to 5870 HD same card above but its twice the price of the 5850)
    - Sound: Realtek 7.1 Channel Sound (On-Board)
    - Optical Drive: LG DVD+/-RW SATA Drive

Reading reviews (10) on this buy and not one has been bad, All saying it runs really cold and fast even with the o/c CPU.

    Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Not bad, however I'm Not sure on the processor but pretty sure it's fine. As far as 5850-5870 w/e you pick is good. (If your tech savy and want to save a few bucks overclock the 5850 if not just grab 5870 and run it stock).

P.S. Don't pay more than 800 for that rig imo.

Well yeah but when you think winXp.. its 32bit, like 95% of the worlds winXP is 32bit practically!

64 bit win 7 would probably be better just because it's newer but not new new. (There is about a 1yr beta test on all new Microsoft Operating systems, they call it retail)

I ran the benchmark and had some trouble. On hi-res it gave a 556 score but did not play any sound. On low-res it gave 1056.

    Spoiler: show

I am running Win7 x64, have an i7 proc, 8 GB RAM... So my problem MAY be, the weak ass video card. (It only has 512 dedicated RAM) Or it could be that, I am running all this on a Macbook pro.

    Any ideas?

edit: Forgot to ask; is there a minimum score to be able to run FFXIV?

Thanks for the reply, you mean $800 as in dollars? If only that would be a sweet world. This will probably cost me about €1000.00 (works out about $ 1,250)

We dont get the good deals and prices like newegg.com over here. As it is that would be from a well known UK website that probably offers the best prices.

    near the bottom

video card (biggest factor) and cpu (2nd biggest because cpu can limit what the video card does). Running an "emulator" for an OS will always degrade a score a bit.. and if not cause problems because its emulated and not the actual OS. (not too sure about the mac thing though since I don't touch macs) but the emulation thing holds true for performance degradation

    Patriot Viper 6GB DDR3

    Current spec is Core 2 Quad @ 3.8GHZ, 4GB DDR2, ABIT IP35 Pro, 8800 GTS 512.

Should I just get 2 5970's in crossfire and a new motherboard as the CPU and memory won't make a massive difference as 2 5970's would?
You know that is like $1200 in video cards? One of those is fine for now, and we haven't heard for sure that they got sli/xfire, though its pretty expected.

Thanks for the replies! After looking at my options I feel better now about needing two computers since I should afford it on time.

Also, I work at Best Buy, so I get a decent to good discount on some of that stuff. Other stuff I'm not sure if they have what I want there or if the price would be comparable to that on places like Newegg after my discount.

Read back to my previous posts about this Mac issues/fixes. However, if you MBP is somewhat old, you may want to check that it supports DirectX 9.0c or higher. There have been all sorts of problems with it on the Mac side.

@Gulkeeva: Windows isn't actually emulated on a Mac. It would be if you were using it inside of the Mac OSX, like Microsoft Virtual PC. There is an actual registered copy of Windows on your internal drive. The only reason you need the Bootcamp program is for a few Mac specific drivers and the ability to switch back and forth between the two OS. But, yes, emulating Windows inside of Mac OSX... that would be hard to fathom running FFXIV. So many compatibility issues with that, haha

@supercoco: According to benchmark scores, not even close, lol. And to anyone else, I wouldn't recommend running FFXIV on your laptop unless it is very upgraded past minimum specs. I can just imagine how hot a laptop would get after a couple of hours of play, if FFXIV will be that intensive. Also, they're comparably more expensive cause you're basically paying a premium for mobility.

windows is only emulated if you use parallels which is windows running on top of OSX. bootcamp is just a windows boot, allow somehow it will run slower than a typical nonmac even with the same hardware.

According to SE's interpretation of their benchmark, you get to wait for a ps3 (0-1500 = not going to happen).

All you guys with the "I have X score, what does it mean" questions really should go take a look at their site. It's been linked to two or three times in the last page or two here.

I don't know how much the scores in this benchmark actually means though. A friend of mine got a relatively low score, yet he runs alpha just fine. His sister's computer (which is beast) got some craaaazy low score and runs alpha perfectly. There could be some driver issues that need resolved here or something. I got a 3kish score on high res with a system I just built last year but the benchmark ran really smooth the entire time. I really don't know how much faith you guys should put on this benchmark.

My PC is still not giving me a visual display on the bm. I get sound but that's it... just a black screen otherwise. I know my rig is outdated but I should get a visual even if I get a horrible score, correct? Here's a quick run of my specs: Dell 8300 pent 4, nvidia 7950GT 512mb agp. I know, sounds horrible. However, I can run ff on high settings save full shadows in crowded areas. The only other pc game I own is oblivion and I run that on high settings w/o high shadows and get no hiccups.

Drivers are updated and dx9 etc. I'm getting a score of around 900-1000 if I wait through the black screen. So two questions: how can I adjust to see the bm and with that setup can I play ffxiv unpleasantly until march?

Is this benchmark seriously telling me that my pc is to shit to play XIV?

    C2Q @ 3.8GHZ
    8800GTS 512
    4GB DDR2

    Score 1664! I dooooooooooooooon't believe it........

My mate scores 2600+ with a 9600GT yet the 8800GTS 512 is more powerful than any of the 9 series apart from the 9800's iirc?

Are you talking about low or high?

If high, then I don't think that's a bad score for your specs actually...

But if low, then something is seriously wrong with your PC, be it drivers or whatever. Should be more.
