My old computer before upgrade scored a 1500, I upgraded my motherboard, processor and new ram and got a 3000. Worth it! Costed me 250$ for upgrade, not bad. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg if you wish to upgrade. Now I should figure out how to overclock and keep it overclocked... I had my AMD Athlon II x2 260 regor 3.2GHz clocked to 3.4 and scored 3100ish but it reset it's self (probably the program, the bios i can't type a number in it for some reason so used a tune up utility that came with my MOBO) I'm not really sure if i have everything optimized to run it's best or not. But either way, I'm happy for the upgrade because it sped up many other things for me too!
So on the tip of a friend I turned Aero off and it increased my low score by 100 points
Are there any other things like this you can change to increase your performance?
After doing some reading around today I've decided to order an HIS iCooler V ATI Radeon HD 5850.
This is the best bang for buck card imo, its £100 cheaper than the 5870 and all for £230.
Also this will overclock to a 5870 there abouts, here is a review by Guru3D
So for those that are wanting a future proof graphics card for XIV in HD resolutions and are looking to upgrade and can't afford to pay the premium for a 5900 series card etc I would personally recommend it for the price!
(Proberly will be cheaper over the pond as well.)

720p score
Would do a 1080p score but my monitor is only 1680x1050
GTX 470 OC
785/1570
Mem @ 1750
Could probably push it farther but need a better cooler and a case with more airflow.
Ok, let me start this off by saying that I know next to nothing about computers.

Ideally I'd like to improve my machine's performance but like I said I'm not especially knowledgeable in computers/parts. What could I upgrade to improve my performance?
From my very very basic understanding I assume a better graphics card but from browsing a few things it seem certain cards could have problems or not work properly. I am willing to invest money into my machine I just want to make sure that I'm not wasting it on something that will give me a headache down the road.
more specifically it's a 4870.
Eh... definitly not 'bad', did it look fluid? Either way keep an eye out in Tech section if you want to change your build, lots of threads popping every day. Definitly will help you out.
Low res seems fine. High gets alot of screen tearing.
I have a very similar score on an E8500, 8gb ram, 4870.
Probably just gonna go vista>7 and > 5870 just before release.

Overall not bad, it seemed to drop a lot in the graph but I never really noticed any visually. This was at low, can't run high.
Low: 3358
High (no SS): 2534

I"m happy either way just hoping that they get the SLI issue fixed so my other 470 gets put to use lol
ive hit higher on the high res setting i will post a SS later on it
question about gpu overclocking: do you need an external cooling unit... and if you go to high on settings, does it act like the cpu where it just wont boot up, or can u cause actual gpu damage? I see a lot of u w/ lower cards then me that run much faster, so considering OCing a little. Thanks.
this was the guide iw as looking at http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1836&pageID=8816
Nope, you'll just hit your stability wall sooner than you would on aftermarket coolers. You always run the risk of frying something if you go too high too fast, inch your way higher if you don't know what's safe.
