SLI/Crossfires users
to run FFXIV benchmark at full screen, which will enable Crossfire/SLI, you will need a modified .dll, download the .dll from this website, http://bygzam.seesaa.net/article/153685727.html and put it in your "/ffxibenchmark/data" folder and rename you ffxibenchmark.exe "3DMark06", this will run the benchmark at fullscreen. to change to 1080P open the config.ini and change the resolution to 0, to change to 720P change it to 1.
i would like to see some benchmark's from someone running some 5970's in Crossfire, or some 480 fermi's in SLI.

It actually slowed the bench to a crawl on High for me, low worked but it was alot slower than running a single card.

Buying a new computer for school. Gonna play 14 on it as well, what do you guys think it would hit on the benchmark? Don't have the computer yet going to buy soon though. i7 930 2.8ghz processor, ATI Radeon HD 1GB 5770, 8GB RAM DDR3 1333.....thoughts?

Stick to 6GB (3 Dimms) to utilize triple channel, and I'd go for a 5850 instead of 5770 if you have the budget.

Agreed the gpu will be ur bottle neck on that system, if u have to change to and for a better video card it would be worth it to get a 1055t AMD and get a better card 5870/gtx470

Yeah, after talking it over with many other forums, I've decided to go this way. With the money saved off the 8GB down to 6GB I was able to jump up to a 5870 card from 5850 originally. The rig am looking at is totalling about $1,386.90 atm.

I thought it was just because of my 9800GX2 and its micro-stuttering....strange that it's happening to you as well. I'm also getting some massive screen tearing when I turn off SLI, and it's on full screen.

Just reminding folks that using a hack to force full screen on something that was not designed to run that way should not be used as a true measure of application performance or behavior. Dropping in custom .dlls is tenuous, at best. Yeah, it's fun to make things run in new ways, just don't read too much into it. If you get great performance, that's a bonus. If you get bad performance, well, it's not really a problem until it's with a finished product.

Cooler is your choice but Corsair H50/Noctua NH-D14 are hogging all the fun lately.
X58 mobo of your choice. Asus/EVGA/Gigabyte are what I'd go for.
6GB ram, G.skill/Corsair/Mushkin 1333~1600
PSU 750w+ is what I'd go for. Corsair exclusively for me.
HDD Western Digital Black/Seagate 10,000rpm/an SSD for boot. a WD Green 1TB storage to store your p0rnz and animus!
GPU 5850/5870/GTX470/GTX480. your call but I wouldn't go under 5850.
Any modern DVD drive will do regardless of company and they're cheap as dirt, though LG seems to be doing well lately.
Case I'd go full tower, or a very good mid tower with added fans. HAF series/Antec 902/1200/CM690 II. are mainstream and range 69-200$.

This kind of stuff with your own touch and tweaks should be 1200-1500$ and won't disappoint.

I'd get at least the Corsair HX850. If you can, get the TX950 or bigger in the event you're looking at GTX480 SLI as the 950 is the minimum requirement for 480 SLI. You might not use it but it's nice to keep the option open.

Shit is huge (need a medium sized case minimum) and it block's one of my RAM slots (nothing you can do about that), but its great for a fan system. OC'd my i7 965X (3.2) to 3.875 easily w/it.

Going to salvage a DVD drive off of my old desktop, only got about a month out of it before my old desktop died on me. I'ts a 24X Sony DVD/CD-R/RW.

Any tips? Have very little building knowledge so just wondering if all those parts will work well together? I would like to look into a wireless network card or usb adapter. Also, would that rig require an additional cooling fan?

Yeah you'll want a CPU fan+thermal grease at least, didn't go into specifics but the build is good.

Oh, and download (or find a student $30) Windows 7.

every CPU requires a fan/coolant system. Unless you want to burn it out while it idles in the bio's lol. What the above person posted for cooling units is good, just depends if u want fan or water cooling.

edit: get a better PSU, 600W will be a huge bottleneck. If you only ever plan to get 1 GPU, then go 850W... if you think u will ever want to SLI/Crossfire 2 cards then go min 1200W

Id get a better fan, even if you don't plan to OC. You may change your mind later though, and if you get a shitty fan now ur just gonna be spending more money in the long run. But if you want any old fan for 100% no OC'ing, id look around $50, will last you longer then that $30 one that has bad reviews
