Going to salvage a DVD drive off of my old desktop, only got about a month out of it before my old desktop died on me. I'ts a 24X Sony DVD/CD-R/RW.

Any tips? Have very little building knowledge so just wondering if all those parts will work well together? I would like to look into a wireless network card or usb adapter. Also, would that rig require an additional cooling fan?

I think you should get a better case, I suggest an Antec 900 II or a Cooler master HAF922 or C690 II. all have great cooling.

If you're not going to overclock, you don't need a CPU cooler other than the stock one.

PSU is a little effy, I'd go 750+ or even 850+ for CFX later.

Other than that they'll all compatible and will work.

Well, was looking at the CPU and it says it comes with a fan/heatsink so would it really be worth the cost to buy a fan to replace it?

Its a "just in case" scenario, if you're confidant that you wont overclock then you shouldn't need a new fan.

Only thing that would overclock my cpu, if this counts, is running 11/14 or CS5 for multiple hours at a time. Possibly running 11/cs5 or 14/cs5 at same time lol

That's not overclocking a CPU..... thats just putting a bigger load on the CPU and requires more RAM
Overclocking a CPU is taking ur 2.8ghz CPU and making it run 100% of the time at 2.9+

Man, get the better compound. Either way you're spending like 5 dollars max.

Shin Etsu would be the way to go, better than arctic silver and cures much faster.

    Low: 2466
    High: 1928

Specs of my system are E6400 Core 2 Duo @2.13Ghz, 4GB DDR2 1033, 4870. I've been looking at some of the specs vs scores on the first page and it looks like even if I upgrade the CPU my score wouldn't change all that much. Guess I'll be saving my money for a new system next summer.

    Plan for saturday:

-1280x1024, Shadows Lowest, Multisampling 1, Ambient Occlusion Disabled
-1920x1200, Shadows Standard, Multisampling 1, Ambient Occlusion Disabled
-1920x1200, Shadows Highest, Multisampling 8, Ambient Occlusion Enabled

Clear minimum/maximum, with what I would consider the 'standard' setting in the middle. I'm going to designate a loop at the following settings, run fraps FPS benchmarking and log MinMaxAvg, execute loop. Location will be low traffic to keep discrepancy to a minimum. Hell, will probably start off initial tests on the introduction boat and worry about the open world later.

Depth of Field isn't being touched yet until I can verify its effect. In Mass Effect 2 there wasn't much performance impact with it for me whether it was on/off, and it blurred the distance/hurt lightning when enabled(ie made things look worse imo). So until I'm sure of what it does, or what its supposed to do.. I won't be touching it yet. Would hate to 'enable' something on a max-settings test when its actually designed to increase performance or vice versa.

Results will be posted in the OP, adding placeholders now.

I'm trying to find a cause for these huge split-second framerate drops in my benchmark attempts.

They're happening on low settings, usually when the camera angle changes or a Lalafell appears on screen... but my machine shouldn't be having any problems with these things D: Framerate drops from a very steady 80 down to 20 or so for a split second of horrifying twitch-reflex panic.

final benchmark scores are still around 5k but these little glitches are driving me nuts. Any advice?

    system specs:

    Core i7 920 @ 2.67 ghz
    nVidia GTX 470
    9GB Triple Channel 1067Mhz DDR3 RAM
    SATA-II 3Gb/s 7200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD

That happens on all 4 systems I've tested, don't worry about it Kaia. It doesn't effect the score much if at all, my FPS monitors don't even detect the drops.

    no sound

I am excited to say that I am getting great (IMO) numbers from the FFXIV benchmark, anywhere from 4500-5000 typically (have run multiple times tweaking overclock settings. This is particularly good since I have an ATI card and have heard bad things about them with this benchmark.

The only problem is I have no sound. I have tried reinstalling and rolling back audio drivers and that doesnt work. I have an ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard and use the onboard sound from it. I have searched all over the internet and it points me to the benchmark thread on this website, but I dont have the time to pour through 40 pages to try to find an answer.

Anyone who can possibly help me out I would really appreciate it.

lol yes... and to preempt the next question the speakers are plugged in too. 8)

I have also played several movies and music files to verify the sound works on other programs.

    I am running windows 7 64 bit.

When I first unpacked the files I got tons of errors saying ddl files were mising. Following that I reinstalled DX9.0c and that was fixed allowing the benchmark to run and giving me video....but no sound.

The Lollafel is looking directly at you...it knows...but yea i get random drops on all tests i have done in places that shouldnt be that taxing on my PC.

But as Celeras said, it is just a split second, doubt its going to cause any issues. Although i know how you feel...just want to see a perfect line all the way across, feel the pride of your computer!
