    I am super green to OCing / hardware in general. Spent a lot of time cruising Tomshardware.com and Newegg along with assorted other sites. For those looking to get a ground up guide to overclocking Intel chips, this was by far the best I found.

    http://www.overclockers.com/3-step-g...core-i3-i5-i7/

    Tutorial best suits an X58 MoBo, but can easily be transferred over to a P55 and others. The comments section is nice too. Hopefully this is helpful to some, it was exactly what I needed.

    Unsure if this has been posted here.

    For those of you with SLI/CrossFire setups, and also people who get lower scores in Win Vista/7 with Aero enabled, someone has created a hacked d3d9.dll which forces the FFXIV Official Benchmark 1 to run in full-screen mode!

    http://bygzam.seesaa.net/article/153685727.html

    Download it and toss the d3d9.dll into \FFXIVBenchmark\data and you're GOOD TO GO!

    hadn't been, does help significantly with some scores, can't apparently screenshot it though (I get a black pane when I do). just as well; I for one, would rather see people submitting benchmarks under similar conditions so we can get an idea of what various platforms are capable of.

    that said, I'm kicking the tires on mine and finding a couple hundred more points scattered around, so I'll be submitting new highs and lows later today, probably.

    It didn't help for me, roughly same score as before. However, I didn't notice as many spikes in the graph.

    nixing aero gave me the same speed up, actually. (optimization issue with the bench, I'm sure.) but tweaking the OC gave me some real boosts... for these benches, I left aero on since that's how most of us have been benching I think.

    briefly: reseated some shit after a spring cleaning (cats :< thank god I have filters on this tower), did a clean delete and reinstall of the 258 reference drivers, overclocked the GPU and toned down the cpu overclock, and came up with these:

    spoilered because they break tables; gpu-z and cpu-z in the 1080p screenshot.

    high: 3220

    low: 4799 - much more pleased with relative loading on the low, I'm still gpu bottlenecked (~80-95% load on gpu, 50-70% on cpu) but at least I'm not <50% on the cpu anymore.

    suddenly no longer concerned about needing to build a new pc :3 - for people with core2duo/quad era hardware (and comparable gpu), the bench really responds well to overclocking, esp. gpu, and the 258 driver line (if you clean install), disabling aero should get a couple extra points out of it for you if you're gpu bottlenecked too.

    I'm having trouble getting the GPU overclocked. I keep getting artifacting.

    What GPU do you have?

    My 5850 clocks to 800 core 1175 mem, I use AMD GPU Clock Tool which works fine, but theres no option to set a profile on startup so I have to keep setting it which is annoying.

    My 5850 is able to get 900/1200 with MSI afterburner. You should give it a try since there is a setting that allows the OC profile to be loaded upon startup.

    Do you have the HIS Turbo? That is an impressive clock! I have the standard one which isn't pre clocked like the Turbo though iirc.

    MSI Afterburner won't let me set the clock/mem above 775/1125, its like ATI Overdrive is stopping it as that is its max etc?

    Hmm... my processor usage doesn't really go above 25-40% on the benchmark, so I'm tempted to OC my 5850 a bit since that looks to be the weakest link in my system. Do you guys do anything fancy or just step up the specs in the Overdrive menu of the Control Center?

    Having not done this before, do you just slowly step up the numbers until you see instability in the system, then back it back down? And long-term, this will shorten the life of the card a bit but shouldn't have any other major drawbacks?

    Overdrive limits you to 775/1125 iirc, can try that first which won't be a problem for artifacts I'm sure, then try Afterburner or AMD GPU Clock Tool, Afterburner is limiting me to Overdrive for some reason, ayin a read around now.

    * AMD GPU Clock Tool: the AMD-approved overclocking utility which bypasses BIOS limitations.
    * MSI Afterburner: for controlling the card’s fan speed. MSI Afterburner is based on Rivatuner.
    * FurMark: Stress-testing application for your overclock.
    * Unigine Heaven: Direct3D 11 benchmarking tool.

    I find FurMark the best program to check for artifacts while increasing the core/mem clock in increments of 5-10, do 20 mins testing for each increase if you have patience.

    I have the Sapphire brand. What you have to do with MSI afterburner to overclock past 775/1125 is to go into program files > MSI Afterburner and open the cfg file with notepad an change the value below to 1.

    EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 1

    This enables user overclocking.

    it may just be me (running a saphire 4870) but in order to overclock over 750 i had to setup a profile with overdrive. i have my stable clock at 800/1000 however i had to edit the file to get it to go to 800 or higher. I can set the profile to just about anything and it will load it up (or try to anyway), do not have to use other tools just have to dig through the XML profiles.

    like i said i am not sure if the same works on the 5800 series.

    Appreciate the info on overclocking, unfortunately taking mine up to 775/1125, while not introducing any artifacting, did cause frequent stutters and drop of frame rate in the benchmark. It did increase the score by about 200 points, but it was far too annoying visually to be worthwhile. I'll play with this more when the actual game is out, but for now I think I'm going to keep it at stock speeds.

    For all of the random posts I see in other sections of the boards from GTX460 owners, I'm surprised none have come out here and gave a good run-down of what is probably the best midrange card right now. There's only one benchmark on the net I could even find, and it seems a little suspect. Anyone with a 460 care to post clocks/scores? Preferably with the just-updated drivers?
