Have you tried the methods in this thread? http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/53...ing-guide.html

The BIOS they found successful for your board is F5/F7/F9.
Nah, I didn't try because I didn't know what the heck I'd be doing. I'm a complete newb to the overclocking/unlocking scene. I did an OC to 3.2GHz from 2.8GHz only because the 720 had the unlocked multiplier and it was pretty easy.

Also, my BIOS version (F4) isn't one of the ones that seemed to be successful, so there's that.

I think this CPU can get to around 60-63C from what I remember reading. I just wanted to play it safe. D:

Ao didn't seem to slow my game much.. what slowed it was the distance ... "blur" effect going on when running around, with it off got a constant 30fps (excluding the slight stutter as SE mentioned for ati cards)

AO is good in some games, I know in Borderlands it has almost no effect on FPS, but provides pretty good gains (on my laptop I have it enabled in the place of higher shadow settings, it provides better looks with minimal performance hit).

Most games though it will slaughter your fps if your hardware isn't top notch.

Yeah, I ran Borderlands pretty much everything on high or near high and never had an issue at all.

The BIOS can be updated. I'm not entirely sure how to do that tbh as I'm just now learning about this stuff. If you find a good guide to follow then it should be pretty straight forward I'd imagine. I understand not wanting to mess with things though.

It made a huge difference, no character/NPCs would show up heh. Will try it again next test to see if they fixed it.

Max temp for 720 is 73C. Keep it below 65C and you'll be fine.

My 720 BE won't run stable with the 4th core enabled. You mileage may vary as some 720s have flawed cores and others are just 820s with a core deliberately disabled.

Updating the BIOS on pretty much any modern Gigabyte board is very easy. Get a flash drive, format it FAT32, download the BIOS for your motherboard, run/extract it to your USB drive, reboot, and then press "END" at the POST screen (or whatever your board wants to start the Q-Flash utility), then just follow the prompts. Once the system reboots, go into BIOS and load the optimized defaults, then reset everything to what you want/need.

Ah, that doesn't seem so bad.

But yeah, my main reason for avoiding the whole unlocked core thing is who knows, maybe mine is flawed. I've got tons of other stuff to do (get a new video card, get a couple better fans, get an aftermarket HSF) so I'll worry about the unlocking thing at a later date, probably. Thanks for the advice though :D

    /evil grin

Is that the 470 at reference clock, factory overclock, or homebrew overclock?

I'm legitimately interested because your 470 score is coming very close to the reference clocked 5870 and SLI is significantly more efficient than Crossfire which makes 2 (relatively) cheap 470s more appealing than adding a second 5870 (mainly because I would have to buy another Sapphire TOXIC 2GB edition which is more expensive than a generic 5870).

My overclock, 825/1900. Theyre probably about equal, as I think id get an extra 100-200 if I were using an i7. Theres several spots where my GPU usage drops below 99% where the extra cpu muscle could help out a tad.

anything that can be done to help along the front page updates cel? it'd be nice to see some of the WHQL 258 nvidia scores up there along with some more of the LGA775 results (I'm particularly interested in LGA775 with modern graphics cards, most of us seem to still have 8, 9, 200 or 4000 series stuff)

and I think all of that is hiding in the pages since post 425 or so, so if there's something that could help you out in getting it updated, please share^^

Don't forget that the 4xx series currently suck bawls with XI. Similar to that 8800 fiasco back in 07-08 or whenever.

is that why so few 4xx's in this thread?

I had an 8800 in 07, never had a problem with it, I do remember having to adjust drivers frequently around that time though.. (the 7800 SLI it replaced couldn't do a damn thing with FFXI though..)

Wish I got a NVIDIA card now if the new drivers are giving that sort of boost!
