That's probably what I will do, find a used quad to replace my c2d. Sadly my mobo doesn't support 45nm versions Q_Q

was hoping to hold off. the card absolutely crushes games that are remotely optimized and/or support more than compatibility AFR2 multi-gpu mode.

if you drill the charts on tom's* you'll see it consistently outperforms the entire 2xx GTX line (single gpu cards) and occasionally outperforms the 470 at 1920x1200 (my monitor res), so to see a real performance boost on any actual -games- I play currently, I'd need to move up to something in the area of a 400$ solution*

so I'm hoping that FFXIV the actual game actually gives real support to multi-card solutions, so I can just keep the card I have another cycle. I'd hate to buy 200$ (or more) in graphics, just to wind up improving only the artificial benchmark score (. .')


anyway, haven't seen real performance boosts out of the bench going to 4.0 instead of the more reserved 3.6 (it net something like 5 points on high and about 30 on low), so the Q6600s are perfectly competent, wouldn't need a 45nm quad (Q9xxx). as for your 4k guess, there's a pair of LGA775 quads with 5870s on the post one summary which hit 4100~ so you're absolutely right.

which chipset is your mobo? - even if you can't support the 45nm a Q6600 will still be good for you if the mobo can overclock pretty well. most of them seem to be able to hit 3.6ghz within temps on air with about 1.55v.. I wouldn't plan on that chip still being alive 3 years from now, but you'll want to upgrade to a new platform by then I'm sure ^^

*yeah, the heirarchy chart has the 9800GX2 down a tier, because it has frame buffer issues at 2560x1600 sooner than the 280 and 285 do - not an issue for my setup.

**480GTX, 2x 460, 2x 5830, 5970, etc. and any SLI or CF will just give the same headaches with FFXIV I'm getting with the 9800GX2 now.

Are you sure about that? Needing 4k to run at 1080p. I thought that would be 1080p with near max settings whereas 2500 would run 1080p in low settings. Either way the 1080p benchmark runs smoothly on my setup and I average about 2570 on it. Still, I may go upgrade my C2D to a compatible 775 quad as well if need be after release.

For quick reference I'm running a C2D 2.66ghz, 3gb RAM, Radeon 5830.

I don't think you'll need 4k to run it, it's just a number I'm comfortable at.

Though how well it "runs" is subjective, maybe a 5k and 3k guy will have the same experience out in an open field, but in a crowded city with hundreds of players and npcs running around? Or in raids with many people, think of all the special effects going on during fights, and having to render that for 20+ people.

It would be nice to get opinions from someone with multiple builds who's actually in the beta though... to compare how stuff runs down the tiers 5k/4k/3k/etc...

And I do hope they fix the SLI/CF issues, though I heard it's only the benchmark that doesn't take advantage of SLI, the actual game should.

nforce 650i. My mobo can oc well and I have a nice cooler, but I also have enough $ to upgrade to an i7 so I am hesitant to drop money on a Q6600. Especially if it turns out my current setup+gtx460 can run ff14 good enough for me, which I'm not sure what that threshold is just yet. Picking up a used quad for <$100 is pretty tempting though, then I could maybe stall on upgrading to an i7 until a round of price-drops comes through.
My most probable path is to hold off on any other upgrades until September. I am hoping the actual game isn't going to be as cpu intensive as the benchmark. But of course with it being developed for PS3 as well, that increases the % that it will be a game that needs a good multicore cpu to work well.

We won't really know until the games been in retail for a few months IMO. Both Nvidia and ATI users in beta have had issues. Not to mention SE is still keeping the FPS capped at 30.

Been searching the forums for 2hr's now and read basically every post I could find on using a 3rd party torrent for the beta client.

I went in to mydocuments>mygames>ff14beta>yada yada and used uTorrent to DL the 7.15.2010 file and the 7.05.2010 file, that went off w/o a hitch, but when I restart the downloader it is still saying it is on boot version 2010.07.05, and it keeps trying to install 7.15.2010.

I seem to be drawing a blank as to what else I need to do in order to get the updater to recognize that I have already downloaded the blasted file.

Help please?

They are in the mydocuments>mygames>ff14beta>ect folder. Right where I torrented them from. d9643 3.5g and bca2a 5mb

The torrents were in a different folder, the metainfo folder.

Brand new computer and got a score of 4561 on low settings. Only have had this computer for 24 hours or so, but im really liking it for the price. For those who need a somewhat quick, relativly cheap, effective way to run FFxiv, this like like a decent way to do it.

I would never pay $1099 for that computer.
Also I would assume having 8GB of RAM means you're not running triple channel memory.

edit: I stand corrected, I guess looking at retail computers that's not a bad deal, relatively speaking.

Seems nice, I'm still trying to decide what to go with myself for a new box. If you are running something like that, you should post screens of high res, it should still be good. $1099 is high for it though. I'm looking at comparable for $800.

Indeed, building your own computer will always be cheaper, however, i did not wish to go that route due to my lack of experience, and my desire for a warranty. To each his own i suppose.

With buying a prebuilt computer at least you don't have to troubleshoot stuff... something goes wrong during the warranty you just send the whole thing in. And if you get the 2 year best buy replacement plan you just bring it up to the store.

I kind of doubt that the next round of price cuts on the i7 920 or 930 will drop ~100$, so you might end up spending more if you update again within the next year after buying a used quad.

I'm pretty sure you'll be ok with just the GTX460, guessing you have an E6600 or so, I'm sure you'll hit 3k in high. what's your monitor res? hell, if they leave it 30fps capped anyone over 2k is probably playable at high res. waiting until september/october to see how the actual retail title plays is probably smart either way^^
