    Questions to PS3 users

Heya guys, i tried to get all the relevant information without creating a new topic but theres still a few things im unsure about.

I'm looking to buy a PS3 as soon as possible. I don't often buy games, but when i do i fully abuse it. I much prefer to get totally immersed rather than jumping round several titles. Im not bothered about space and only really bothered about how loud it runs when it would ruin my gaming experience. I won't put films or music onto the console, it will be for gaming.

    So here's whats im wondering;

    1. Is it worth getting a slim PS3 or stick to the original?

    2. Will 60GB be enough for me, going by what i said above?

    3. Is warranty worth it. For example would it be feasible to try and find a deal on ebay?

Thanks all for the help, haven't been a console gamer for over 6 years now so well out of the loop.

    1. Slim is very nice in my opinion. It's really quiet. Can't say too much about the old one when it comes to noise. Slim has had less problems when it comes to firmware updates too.

    2. 60GB will be enough. You can always upgrade the harddrive for really cheap later on if you want.

The HDD that comes in a PS3 is largely a moot point since Sony lets you put in a standard 2.5" SATA drive. As mentioned, easy to swap out for a large drive later if you find you need to.

Unless you're dead set on a backwards compatible PS3, I would just opt for a Slim. They do have revised hardware that runs cooler/quieter.

I have both (one of them belongs to my brother) and they're about the same honestly. Like stated, slim is quieter, but the fatboy doesn't really make much noise either.

personally i'd recommend the slim as it is quieter, uses less power and is less likely to be prone to overheating problems

I can't compare to the slim, but my fat ps3 is quiet. The fans run on 2 speeds (from what I can tell) and it only gets louder if my room gets hot, but even then it is difficult to hear over the game itself so it's really a non-issue.

Not sure why you wouldn't use it to watch movies. Do you already have a blu ray player?

As for the warranty, it is expensive to get fixed (nearly the price of a new system) so you may want to consider it depending on how expensive the coverage is. That said, ps3's don't exactly have the high failure rate of other consoles.

Didn't Sony announce a console bundle with the Move controller at E3? Might want to wait for that to become available before you buy.

Like someone else said, unless you really want a backwards compatible system, theres no real reason to not just get a slim. Its quieter, takes less power, overheats less.

Fat PS3 has about four fan speeds I believe.

Mine hits speed 2 shortly after playing a game (not sure if that's common or not). If the game makes full use of the cell processor (Uncharted 2, God of War 3, etc) or if I'm playing a game online, fan speed kicks it up a notch into "as loud as 360" territory.

Granted I play with my PS3 standing which isn't as good for temperature dispersing apparently.

    Not even close.

If Xbox 360 didn't have the option to install games to the hard drive, I would have stopped playing Forza 3 a long time ago. The new Xbox should be really quiet though, they went from 2 smaller fans to one big one, like the PS3.

EDIT: This is from my experience with a 60gb launch ps3 and a 120gb jasper 360 elite model.

I probably will use it as a blu ray player and dvd player but i just meant that gaming will come before so if space is an issue then the other features would take a back seat.

And seems alot of people opt for the slim, the only real reason i would think about the original would be because i may save money, and only if i saved a decent amount at that.

Last I checked, both Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft charge 50% of the current retail cost of the system for repair services past when the warranty expires.

Get a slim. While it can't play PS2 games, I'm pretty grateful for the availibility of PS1 game use. I <333 my slim~!

If your sitting right next to your system, you will notice the noise. I Play my ps3 from my pc chair, my ps3 sits on my pc desk. But i play with headphones on so that shit never bothers me. But after 2-3hr sessions and i take my headphones off. My ps3 sounds pissed off sometimes. Only rly happens if im playing Uncharted2 & MW2.

But if your across the room on the couch. Wont notice it.

I have a fat body PS3. MGS4 bundle (backwards compat). It stands upright cause of space issues

    1. More than likely a slim is your best option unless you want BC. My launch PS3 works great but it is basically a mini-heater.

    2. Probably, and as said before it is very easy/cheap to upgrade space.

    3. Eh.

speaking as someone who got a 60 GB with the Backwards Compatibility before they got rid of them, I would buy a slim and upgrade the HDD later if you want to. I put a 500 GB HDD in mine and it has more than enough space for anything you'll ever need. As far as a warranty goes, i've never bought a warranty for a video game console aside from my 360 (for obvious reasons) and my launch 360 RROD'd just outside of the window lol, so it's up to you. I still have my original PS2, and SONY makes hardware like nintendo does (IE: it'll last through the apocalypse).

I have a question for all the PS3 slim owners, when moving a console from flat on its bottom, to vertical does it scratch disks? or make a sound that can only be described as absolute terror within your disk drive? or can you freely move the system while its running without having this issue, I ask because I do flip my fat PS3 a lot and I never hear anything bad inside.

Non tray loading machines dont usually have the issue.

I plan on purchasing a new PS3 soon myself. Now while I love the PS in general from PS1 to now I've had so damn many issues with my PS having disk read errors for years and it's like a flat $150 to fix on the PS3. I ended up going through, at least count 6 PS2's. I bought them all new, I take very good care of my games and systems, hell I have some PS1 games that I bought years ago that are still in amazing condition. 4 of the 6 PS2's and my PS3 all broke down around the 13-16 month mark. I missed my warranty on my PS3 by like 4 days to get it fixed for free so I was pissed. This time around I will be getting an extended warranty without a doubt.
