Will most likely have an impact on recast timers for certain spells/abilities as well. Not sure though. They have to be real careful with this cause it could potentially break the game.

Remember that the dats are based on a combat system that doesn't exist, I wouldn't place too much faith in them at this point.
That's not true. The only thing that has changed is the action bar turned into the stamina bar and the effect bar was taken out. The same gear can apply to that.

I can't speak on the haste part, I imagine there will be haste on SOME equipment. I can't find the photos, but someone posted photos of weapon types from alpha and some of them had attack speed+ on them.

The Stamina Bar is nothing like the alphas action bar. In alpha, you waited for it to recharge, then you attacked. In the beta, you can attack repeatedly until the bar reaches near empty, or you can attack at a more measured pace and never run out of stamina. Completely different mechanic.

AFAIK, I'm the only one who posted pics of weapons, (unless its another forum), and none had + attack speed.

I edited my last post to clarify the difference between FFXI style haste and stamina regen which you probably missed, since this was posted while I was editing.

    EDIT: From Tanaka:

–Next, can you tell us more about the brand new battle system?

Tanaka: The tempo has changed the most. With the prior system, your action gauge would fill up, and then after that, you would wait for your effect gauge to fill up in order to increase the strength or accuracy of your attack. However, that time spent filling up would translate into just empty waiting time for the players. So the first thing we decided to do was get rid of the effect gauge. Then we made the action gauge longer and made it fill naturally over time. Players could carry out any of the various actions available to them by using up a portion of that gauge. If you fill the gauge completely before attacking, you can pull off around 3 or 4 actions in a row. Even as you carry out those actions, your gauge will start filling again. In the end, we have a battle system that makes for a much quicker battle tempo.

Thats a slight change from the alpha then, but you would expect that.

I wonder if that means it increase the speed of your stamina regen for a set amount of time, or gives it a one off boost?

EDIT: Regardless, it isn't really haste as per my original post because having your stamina build faster doesn't increase the speed of your attacks, it just lets you get more attacks in over time. There is a subtle difference there, but its an important one. As Kaylia mentioned, its much easier to balance a mechanic that lets you attack consistently for longer periods of time than one that lets you hit the mob faster.

    Its a good change imo.
Agreed, and Speed Surge appears to place a buff on you so I assume it would last the duration of the buff, as the hp drain is an enfeebling effect on landing an attack and the effect is longer than its cooldown to which could be nice.

Kinda unrelated but has anyone played with a PS3 controller, and if so are we going to be repeating the gimpedS2 vs PC trend.

Speed Surge does place a buff on you, you can attack another mob and you will still absorb HP, and the effect is longer then recast atleast in alpha

Yeh, hope stamina regeneration lasts just as long too.

People were telling me that its easier to play with a controler, and from the UI design atm I can see how that can be. I still prefer keyboard/mouse though

One thing I will say that I've enjoyed is the more liberal use of AOE attacks (WSes) - I'm looking forward to, especially as a gladiator, tanking multiple mobs.

I'm curious if they gonna place some kind of prevention that wont let you go into passive mode while in a instance/HNM fight. If not, it means you could bring 1- however many weapons you want and if ones durability wares, you could go into passive mode and change it.

I don't see the problem with that. You shouldn't be taken out of a massive end-game fight if you were prepared enough to bring extra weapons along with you.

Heck, I'd like to see fights like that - mobs so resistant to types of damage (slashing, piercing, ect.) that the players have to react to them through use of different weapons or entire classes.

The increased freedom that being able to change things around on the go brings can also extend to more exotic and tactical boss fights. We need to get far far away from the standard "if you can't burn it down, kite it around" style of dropping bosses. Surely they can think of more ways, or shit, just flat out give the mobs the AI to look past that type of stupidity.

I know that they're already messing with different AI types. Those damned monkeys in the alpha constantly tried to break off of the fight and move to range to use that reaching scratch move that packs a pretty decent punch. Simply utilizing more basic AI like that will go a long way towards keeping fights from becoming boring tank and spank or kite-fests.

That would make fighting more than just simply hitting or nuking the mobs. Imagine the possibilities. HNM fight where you got your tanks/melee/mages, blacksmith in the back waiting to fix peoples gear. Miners using minerals to weakened mob elementally, and Botanist using plants to enfeeble the mob maybe?

Cichy is pretty correct imo. I used a ps3 controller Saturday night, and it was quite a bit easier than the last time I used a keyboard. Buttons were mapped almost verbatim to XI. Menu navigation was pretty easy. Targeting works similar, as in when you press left dpad it only cycles through mobs to the left of the player rather than coming around to the other side as when you tab cycle. Pressing the left stick (which locked target in XI) takes you in/out of active mode. I felt the camera controls and moving in battle, since mobs move a lot more now, was considerably easier with the controller. Obviously you have to put it down to chat, but with them talking about the macro chat thing and how battle will move to much to chat that may be less of an issue this time around.

Eh? I've been playing with a PS3 controller and its great so far. Definitely not as fast as hitting 0-9 on your keyboard for abilities but it gets the job done. I played with PS2 controller back in FFXI so I could just be used to it.

The game is designed around it, and it works well.

So, blacksmith would just be a pitstop like brd in FFXI? I'm not sure that's how most players define "fun fight", but certain people have strange taste around here.

If they want to make fight more than just "tank and spank", they need to add adds to fight, monsters with miscelleaneous effect (charm come to mind), different gimmick... Adding more class for 1 or 2 buff/debuff doesnt really change the fight..

Well, they'd do what they're supposed to do and get to participate. Fix lots of high-end gear in a short time to make it more 'exciting'. Blacksmiths 'endgame'.

I think it should be optional though and not that someone would be forced to come on blacksmith because it's required. How that's supposed to work out, idk, but would be cool nonetheless.

There are ppl on FFXI that play this game 8 hours a day and have 1-2 job at 75 after all this time because they enjoy those jobs so I wouldnt be suprised to run into ppl who will be just fulltime land disciples on 14.

Sound as exciting as midget porn. I'm sure some people enjoy doing mundane task, but it's not a majority. They will ask for more.

    NA & JP versions

    2 questions:

    1. Has anyone tried to use the NA version with a JP account or JP version with a NA account yet?

In FFXI, it is possible to play setup both NA and JP versions by simply installing both playonlines with a single installation of FFXI.

    2. Can you use Windows IME in the NA version?

In FFXI, you can't type any JP characters unless you're using JP playonline or Windower.

Can we get another thread for the non speculation? Kaylia can rage about whatever crap he likes all day long then and everyone else can ignore it.
