I guess there is some conflict in whether the Alpha client could use the IME or not...

Would one of the lucky s who got into beta try and confirm, with screenie would be a plus, but I'd take your word for it. This is a make or break deal for me-- I need to know which version of the game to buy so I don't end up like I did on FFXI (the main reason I am not playing it now >.<

Also, side note, belts & zippers can suck a dick.
Nomura is a great artist, just not a good character designer.

IME was available in the alpha. It had a few bugs but I submitted bug reports on it. (mainly couldn't press the enter key after typing hirigana then switching back to alphanumeric) Hopefully they will keep it for beta and so-on. But IME def was available, and could input kanji and everything.

Ok, I'll grant you that, if only because of Brave Fencer Musahi (which he illustrated, but didn't design).

He can still suck a dick though.

Amano does good backgrounds and imagery, but not only are all his human faces exactly the same, they're this unreasonably pale, androgynous, constantly morose, staring thing that hits the vary nadir of the uncanny valley.

Akihiko Yoshida is consistent in terms of art style while having a range of tones he can dips his toes into (contrast FFXII with VS). Frankly, I prefer his character, monster, level, and vehicle designs over every other artist SE has ever had on staff with the exception of Akira Toriyama.

Haha, I've always admired Nomura for his art, despite his characters being lolbelts and zippers, they are memorable. Some of his art on KH and Parasite Eve still sounds out to me. Hell, the art on Dissidia is amazing even if the designs are... well to put it bluntly really fucking weird (replace belts with BEADS).

I like Amano, his drawings are memorable, but I couldn't tell the difference between some of the characters as well. I think there's one FFIX pic with Garnet and Zidane where you could switch the faces and no one would be the wiser. He's unique and stylish for better or worse, and it's always good if people can instantly recognize your style.

Yoshida is amazing though, even looking at that picture for 2 seconds you get that impact. Staring any longer and you see nice details and lines. I knew about this guys art before, but it really is amazing.

After the one character per account announcement, something occurred to me. They are essentially only giving us one character to play, yet the rumor is that they plan on designing the game so that character progression is more linear (as in, we can choose to specialize in one thing or be passable at a few things, but we can't just do whatever we want). In ffxi, we only got one character because our one character could perform whatever task we wanted and independently level any job. So why is it that we only get one character in ffxiv? Does this mean that our options for switching between "jobs" won't be as limited as they initially suggested (thereby not necessitating additional alts)? Or did the design team forget to explain this stuff to the guys who were in charge of the number of character slots we get?

I think what you're talking about is the Character Level/Class level situation. Classes don't set base stats, as your char level goes up, you get points to allocate into whichever of the 6 stats you want. So you can be specced for a melee or tank class, switch to a mage and you'd still have the physical lean.

Personally, I see it as very freeing, you can be a more defensive clothie or specialize 100%.

At any rate, SE mentioned something about being able to save a stat set, maybe tie it to a certain class. I'm certain they confirmed being able to reset your char stat allocation, but I'm not sure if there was a cost or not. You won't be stuck with your stats if you don't want to, I'm sure of that.

Your options for switching between jobs won't be limited at all in XIV. There will be stat point resets so you'll never be "stuck" with certain stat arrangements. Racial differences are minimized in XIV so you have no reason to level multiple characters other than wanting to look at a different character model.

If our combined inventory/retainer space isn't enough to house all the stuff we need, then we can all curse S-E together later.

I guess we did need a thread on this...

It'll never be enough, and it never is in an MMO. You collect too much throughout normal playtime (much less gathering time you purposely set out for) for there to ever be enough inventory. The bigger gobbiebags/satchel/locker/safe or the bigger bags/banks are never enough. The only number I've seen thrown around (and have seen in screenshots) is an 80 slot inventory in FFXIV, and that sounds nice, but it *really* isn't that big of an inventory in the grander scheme of things.

The situation's even worse if you're a packrat that horded *everything* in FFXI worth selling until you managed to get a stack to put on the AH.

So, about that PS3 beta application..

Well after alpha 2 invites went out to PS3 FF13 code people, I changed my PC beta application to use the FF13 code and say PS3. And now PS3 release is after retail. So I wonder if the PS3 beta is going to be way after retail release. I just want to play the beta as soon as I can. Wonder if I should change my application back to PC?

I was in the same situation, and I did. I bet it ate my FFXIII code in the process, but oh well.

Tineey posted this in another thread:

    http://news.mmosite.com/content/2010...system,1.shtml

There is some good info in this though:

    Classes added to the beta:

Gardener is added to the Disciples of the Land, Carpenter, Tailor and Tanner are added to the Disciples of the Hand.
Pic of a Lala Glad and a Lancer in robes?

A NPC named Retainer bearing the function of warehousing and selling can be hired

The new Retainer system enables players to hire an NPC named Retainer to help them sell items in a designated market, but players should choose their goods and set prices in advance. Even though players are offline, that NPC will still work for them.

There are business zones in each town, like Limsa Lominsa and players can place that NPC there to sell items. The business zones must be very busy as soon as the beta test is officially launched. To prevent the business zones from being too crowded, developers are currently considering expanding the business zone in the form of instance.

If you want to hire Retainer, you only have to talk with the Adventurer Association Management NPC. The NPC Retainer in each race, class, faction has the same storage space.

Will Retainer be able to change equipment like characters? Square Enix is still thinking it over and will make further consideration based on players’ feedback after the beta test begins.

Something terrifying in seeing the combination of how cute lalafell are in this game and the sheer imposing nature of that sword. Next-gen graphics really do make all the difference.

I'm just posting here to let everyone know how officially pathetic I am. I'm 99% sure I had a dream last night. And it may or may not have been about getting into beta. I need to find something more productive to do.
