I love how much stuff they just took directly from FFXI using the exact same models and everything. Awesome.
Also my Qiqirn is back, yay! Definitely one of my favorite creatures from XI.
It's a fucking test client people. What don't people get it? Also not to mention having unlimited FPS itself doesn't matter to the majority of people playing. Most MMORPG players don't care about FPS because in RPGs it's not that big of a deal compared to an Action game or FPS.
It's capped for the purpose of testing. It would mean nothing to be uncapped if the game itself isn't fully optimized. It's very obvious why it's capped.
There's no option for V-sync in the config, or I would have turned it on. I was getting minor screen tears in the very first cutscene that reveals your char, and it happened 3 of the 5 times I tested the Char Creation (as well as shadow settings. A.occ was on for all of the passes). My buffer size was set to "Window size" (other options are double, half and quarter); I have no idea what the setting values mean, and thus left it to its default.
That said, the config options have only expanded since the start, and there are actually sliders (well they look like sliders, but they are really more just on-off switches atm) in-game that allow you to adjust Character Shadows, Dust Effects, Extended Drawing, and "Physics". It's, hopefully, just a matter of time. I don't remember who said it, but it's of course more important that the game has functionality before full optimization. So much effort would be wasted optimizing some aspect that ended up getting cut or revised.
And of course there is the fact that char creation is, perplexing but hope-inspiringly set to 60fps.
Duno what you are getting to uppity about it, you don't know any of what you say is the truth, makes no sense to have capped frame rates whilst we can change ever other graphical setting and resolution.
I woudln't be surprised to see them keep capped at 30 for release, and although it may not bug you it bugs enough people to make it an issue.
Um yeah no need to get worked up over it right now.. Just be sure to always mention it when giving feedback, and encourage others to do the same.
Serious question: what is the difference between 30fps and 60fps and why does it matter? I know about as much to identify what fps means and the game will be running smoother at 60 vs. 30, but is there some other benefit that's getting everyone in such an uproar?
I is stupid hurr.
What time zone is the beta start times listed in the sticky? I want to know if I've missed EU start or not/
Yeah, what are the times in EST?
Fuckin figure it out. You have the largest collection of knowledge of all time at your fingertips.
Figuring out how to convert PDT into EST is NOT FUCKING HARD.
30 is smooth, 60 is seamless. The weird thing is anything inbetween looks more choppy than it does at 30, and I suspect this has to do with screen refresh rates. Someone else more capable can probably respond with more specifics or tell me I am wrong, but my own observation in games is that it's either 30 or 60+ for best results.
It's unheard of for PC games to be capped these days anyway, it goes to show SE's lack of understanding of PC development (obviously assuming it doesn't change).
30 FPS = first console limitation![]()
I think/hope the capped fps thing is for beta only. Because in any case the ps3 version has limitations already that pc hasn't (res and textures).
As others have already said, yeah it's smoother gameplay to the point that for some people it's a glaring difference. On the PC in particular, a 30fps cap is especially annoying since visuals have remained rather stagnant for a few years now with the majority of titles still being DX9 and tied to consoles, while the hardware has continued to improve. The two main benefits (outside of functionality differences) have boiled down to higher res + textures / higher frame rate. A cap as low as 30fps removes one of those benefits.
However, I do realize that a minority of users place a focus on these things and a lot of people still don't see differences in things like 720p vs 1080p and up / V-sync tearing / etc., and since it's a subjective argument it usually never goes anywhere.
For FFXIV in particular, it's more of a concern that they created the entire system similar to FFXI, in that the 30fps cap isn't due to optimization targets, but that it's directly related to things like movement speed.
