What lvl are you exactly? Most MMO's dont up and reward you with tons of cash for starting quests or low level-ish type events. Even WoW, which threw money at you, only gave you a few copper for your first lvls.

I would rather see an economy based off supply and demand moreso then "Who can do the most leve's and get the most bonuses"

A few copper was fine when it was 250 copper to pick up a piece of your starter set of armor. 60 gill is okay, I guess, when a single bronze sheet for crafting costs 3k, and there is NO armor available for purchase, AND the crafting leves are disabled.

Omegab: a blue or a turquoise can kill you as a lancer if you get on a whiff fest with skewer, which is part of the problem. Missing 4-5 hits in a row when out of stamina against a freakin blue mob is kind of strange, especially right at the beginning of the game. Trust me, there were plenty of lancer corpses strewn around, especially around those mole rats.

I'm a little confused if someone with beta can clear this up.

I noticed in a character creation video I saw, you can choose what disciple you want to be.

If I chose disciple of the hand, does that mean my main job is as a crafter? Could I choose to become lets say a Lancer after I chose disciple of the hand?

It's only picking the discipline you start as. Similarly in XI you choose thief, but that didn't mean anything in the long run, just the items you start with.

I didn't apply for the alpha/beta because I didn't want to have to delete/restart my charachter after playing around for awhile. But now I'm starting to get jealous! Thanks for the videos, and screenshots, and info everyone. It's exciting to see everything going on.

I'm not too worried about the guild leve limit if you can "get around" it by grouping. I loved grouping, and was worried it would take a hit in this game, so if this is SE's way of keeping it around, I'm pretty happy honestly. Even if it mildly inconveniences me on occasion.

And as far as money/armor, crafting guild leves won't be disabled on the retail release (i'd assume), so it should be a little bit better there. And I don't mind keeping it fairly grindish as a game. That's something that set it apart a bit from other MMOs, and its something I loved to hate, so I'm ok with that (as long as they don't turn it into an /absurd/ grind, or anything like that).

I'm /thrilled/ to see that it looks like IME will work. I was in a Japanese LS for a good part of my time in FFXI, and I hated looking like a retarded five year old trying to speak japanese in english letters. Was embarassing. Very.

The lock-on thing is something I enjoyed in FFXI, although I didn't enjoy the stopped period when you tried to disengage. It seems like this is a feature they could have kept, without keeping that stopped period, and that would have been better imo....

Looks like there's some technical issues that need sorting out, but overall my impression is that the game is absolutely gorgeous. I'm in love with it.

Edit: I heard the hate mechanics were wacky in alpha, but I haven't heard anything about them so far in beta. Has anyone had the chance to form an impression of them yet, even if only in the broadest sense? I'm quite curious about how it'll work.

Tbh, I think it's better that way.

From having played alpha a bit, I definitely would rather wait for the retail version. Playing the crappy alpha/beta longer would have ruined the experience for me.

Huh? What MMO isn't grindy? How is a square enix MMO's grind "set apart" from other MMOs? I'm guessing you mean the community and being forced to grind together as opposed to having the choice to grind alone.

    Clarify plz.

this is true, i got killed by blue puk hatchling simply because puks do pretty good dmg, and thier ws is pretty powerful, prolly would have been alright with dif gear.
Wiffing is killer, makes a huge difference, some mobs are more vasive than others but it feels like lnc is bad at all of them, maybe lnc needs to really pump dex incredibly, or maybe some of the lnc gear will up accuracy somehow. I got one gear that said it upped control and output, no idea what that means or what that does. ((found a bad screen shot, it was a cloth doublet +15 dex +8 control+ 12 output))
the mobs are different places and at this point doesnt seem like you have enough to choose a type thats particularly easy for your class, except for the moles and the rats i didnt see a whole lot of the other types of mobs around, maybe people killed most of them. I didnt really explore teh seaside area though, it may have some good jellyfish to kill

That's half of what I mean. The other half of what I mean involves getting into comparisons with WoW or w/e that I'd really rather not start. Or at least rather not argue about. In my opinion (and possibly exclusively in my opinion) gear seemed to drop to you much more easily there than in ffxi, where prolonged farming periods were involved before you could get your SH +1, or Ares body, or w/e.

I know plenty of people didn't like that, so I'm not trying to say it's better or anything. Just saying I think it slightly distinguished the game (for better or worse), and that I, personally, enjoyed it.

And then, as you said, I prefered XPing with multiple people much more to grinding it out by myself.

I just don't get the gross inaccuracy at the beginning of a game. Yes, its an MMO, and yes, its a Square Enix MMO, which apparently gives them carte blanche to make things aggravating, but seriously? 5 whiffs in a row? I've never played -any- game that involved that much inaccuracy.

Whatever, though; I might switch it up and go glad for the rest of this phase 1 beta, since I don't think I'll be maxing 2 jobs this time around with the given time period. From the few glads I saw running rampant, inaccuracy didn't seem to be a problem.

Yoli: I'm just saying that every MMO on the planet involves grinding. Just because you level up faster in one than in another doesn't mean you aren't grinding. You grind in EQ, EQ2, Asheron's Call 1 and 2, Vanguard, Age of Conan, World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online, Darkfall Online, Mortal Online, FFXI, FFXIV, Star Trek Online, and every other MMO on the planet. Lets not even get started on Korean MMOs like RO and Trickster. I don't think FFXI's grind was unique to FFXI in any way other than by providing a wonderful incentive to party (by rule of, you simply cannot solo unless you're a bst, and if you are, God help you, you twit).

That makes them bad testers. If you don't complain, nothing gets fixed and you have a sub-par product that only SE loyalists will dump their money into. As long as people have a point, it shouldn't matter how many F-Bombs they drop into a sentence. Would you really prefer it if SE didn't make a bunch of necessary changes and said "we didn't do it 'cuz they were mean to us."?

Not this early, not by this much. Granted, this was mostly a product of mob placement and a slower leve CD, but SE very clearly claimed that solo was meant to be a stronger alternative this time around. I'm only letting it slide right now because I was able to get a foothold in terms of non-leve mobs and it's the beta; there are bound to be a truck load of changes over the next 3 months.

I didn't see any point in using Skewer. Light Thrust did just as much damage as everything else, but it didn't have any debuffs. Same damage for half the cost meant that it was much more efficient to just spam light over and over and skip the rest of the skills entirely. Plus it doesn't miss as often.

Yeah, I eventually just switched to nothing but light thrust spam, but ye' gods if that wasn't boring. Lancer, I feel, has taken a huge step back from Alpha, even if you can swing faster this time around.

I haven't really been keeping up with FFXIV, but is player movement/positioning completely server side now? I finally tried making a character and logging into the beta yesterday, and there was massive input lag while simply trying to walk around.

Did they take the "hits all targets in a row" out of skewer? Because I always felt like when playing on my friend's character or watching him play, that the reason you'd use that move was to skewer multiple enemies in a row, and it was great for that. It doesn't seem like an ability meant for 1 on 1.

to me the AoE radius of conj spells also seemed to take a hit. If they are even AoE anymore

I found the range on conj spells decreased as well. I had to run much closer up to not get error messages. Also, spirit dart is pitiful now and you almost have to use your AoE spells to kill stuff.

I submitted a fair bit of feedback about lancer accuracy in Alpha. Sad that they haven't done anything about it yet.
