my friends brother was addicted to heroin he fucked up his arm jabbing a syringe into his arm because he couldn't find a vain and had to have half of his arm removed, good thing hes in rehab now and turning his life around. he said used to stand at the freeway off ramps and make like $200 in about 3hrs but always blew it on drugs.

Not many curbside bums where I live, but even the few that I do see, I ignore completely. Musicians are another story though. If they're playing something well, then I'll usually toss in some change or a dollar or something. Haven't seen any original and clever signs, but that might get a response too.

More common around here are people catching you as you exit a gas station/convenient story and hitting you with some sob story. It pisses me the fuck off. Though one time, this guy came up to me and my friend as we were going IN to a store and started his line with "Hey man, sorry to bother, but I'm Mexican-" and then he kinda stuttered and just paused for moment. At that, the friend I had with me just couldn't help himself and busted out laughing. I hid my own smile poorly and just turned the guy down and went in... Thus, another inside joke was born: "Sorry to bother you, but I'm Mexican."

There was once a Mexican guy in San Antonio, near where I live, who held out a sign in different parts of the city and it said. "help need 10 more dollar to get back to mexico" That guy banked... I asked him one day, said he made like $1500/day.

Moral: Appeal to people's racial distrust! Say you need money to get back to w/e you came from!

No. The only bums I see around here are always the same people, standing in the same spots outside walmart. if they can spend every day for more than a year standing outside walmart, they can get a fucking job at walmart.

There are a lot of them in the Tampa area here, i'll never give straight cash out to a homeless person, if they were responsible with money i could assume (perhaps wrongly) that they wouldn't be in that situation.

But very often if i'm going into a grocery store or driving through a fast food spot i'll pick them up a bottle of water and a sandwich or something or something off the dollar menu.

If I didn't see the same 6 people every day on my two block walk between the train station and my office, I might have more sympathy. There is one older man that has the saddest eyes though, and always wishes passersby a good evening on their way home, even those of us who studiously ignore him. I feel like I should give him something some time.

Another one that makes me laugh, but I've only seen him from my car and haven't stopped to help him - he has a sign that reads "Hungry Hungry Hobo".

I'd rather give people food than money. And I don't understand this concept of "spare change". It's still money I can use, there isn't anything "spare" about it. If they would ask if one could spare some change, that's another matter.

INC because I'm from NYC, but I never give anyone money and I almost always just ignore them. The guys on the trains are always in your face about asking for money and it's fucking annoying. The guys on the street are always asleep so I'll never leave money in their cups or w/e. The only guy on the train who ever gets money is a dude who can't talk and has both his legs amputated and walks on his hands, everyone gives him money.

I base it on situation. Here in detroit a guys holding a sign saying he needs money to eat and I gave him a 10, made me feel good.

With all the loss of jobs and foreclosure I try to help where I can but if someone looks like they been camping in a spot for months with no attempt to try to improve their situation then I wouldn't.

There's quite a few bums in my city, but I only ever give them money if their sign entertains me. Stuff like "FUCK FOOD, I NEED A BEER!" (only entertaining the first time, though haha.)
