    Running/Jogging Advice Required

    Hi BG,

I started jogging regularly in February to try and get in shape. I'm 6' 5", not sure what I weigh, was over 250 lbs when I started but I've lost weight since then.

I got myself some decent shoes, started out at 1 mile a night, 4-5 nights a week and built up from that. Now I usually jog 2-3 miles a couple of times a week and try and push myself to do it faster another night, while every now and again going for an endurance jog, doing it longer than I have before. I managed to do 10km last week, but it brought up a problem. I had the stamina to do it fine, but my ankles were aching by the end. They were fine the next day though I don't think I could have run much further without them starting to hurt a lot.

I have set my sights on running a half marathon in october, and the 10km is halfway there but I don't want to hurt myself pushing it further. Is it something I will build up on over time, do my ankles just need more practise? Could it be how I'm running that's doing it? Or should I be worried

    Any advice would be appreciated.

It might be your shoes. I really don't know much about jogging though. Good work on sticking with it though. A lot of people just bail after the first few days.

Shoes are good I think. I went to the local running shop, they checked my gait and checked my arches. They have a decent reputation, so I'm not really worried about those.

You should always see a doctor before starting a new exercise regimen.

That's the only advice I can give, but I think it's fairly good.

I'm no Doctor, but if I had to guess, at your height, maybe push yourself a bit less. The stress on your feet and ankles will be higher than some other people's, so in your training, you may want to focus on a certain distance and then cool down.

Again, I have no fucking idea what the Hell I'm talking about.

It's most likely just soreness since your body is not currently conditioned to run that distance, same thing happens when someone who never lifts weights actively starts to work out. I'd personally rest a day before attempting that run, do it then giving your body a day of rest then jog like normal for the other days until you want to attempt it again, in which case repeat the process. Over time you should get used to it.

And of course make sure you're properly hydrated, see a doctor, etc

I can help you because I train a lot. First, you said that you started jogging 4-5 nights a week. That is way too much for a start my friend. Jogging 45min twice a week is way enough for most people. 4-5 times a week is extremely intense for your body and so your muscles need to recover from that. I believe that you do not let them recover enough when you train 4-5 times a week. It's absolutely normal to feel some pains in the legs and the ankles when you are jogging, but in your case it seems that it's a lot of pain. I suggest you to reduce your jogging rate to two times a week or three times a week max!. 4-5 is way too much and not worth it at all. You need to let your body recover if you want to see some results! 4-5 jogging a week is worthless and you will not see any result, in fact, you will see a deterioration in your endurance! And it's starting in your ankles. So my friend, 2 training a week is way enough and 3 training a week is kind of the maximum. If you want to train 5 times a week, you can too, but you need to make sure that you are well recovered.
Finally a little trick for you, if you did not know that: when you are jogging, you do not need to go fast. But how to know if you are running too fast? If you can have a conversation with someone without losing your breath while you are running, then that is the good intensity! If you cannot have a conversation with someone(talk) without losing your breath, then you are going too fast!
See you again and keep it up.

I am nowhere near your height (I'm 5'9), but I usually run around 3-6 miles on my workouts... and I have had an aching in my legs after workouts (I ran XC in high school and now I'm just trying to continue with keeping my muscle haha) if you were fine the next day, there really shouldn't be a problem. Push yourself, but don't push TOO hard, especially since you're just moving from above the 3 mile range... it is definitely a wall that a lot of people hit (I remember when I ran my first 5k.. a lot of my teammates and I had an incredibly hard time) and once you get through that you'll be fine =) and good job for keeping with your routine!

Yeah, I'm running on the streets/sidewalks. The whole reason I decided to exercise this way was for convenience, and being able to just run around where I live helps a lot. Oh, and the pace thing, yeah I have that covered, definately sure about how fast I can run without losing my breath. Was really happy with my endurance over the 10k, was just worried about the ankle pain.

So it looks like if I cut down to 2-3 night a week and space them out so I have some recovery in between it should help me get used to it. Thanks guys.

Need to keep in mind too, running on streets and sidewalks will kill your legs and knees faster since there is no give. Find a park with dirt or grass trails and you will feel a lot better.

Or a treadmill. If you have to run outside, stick to streets over sidewalks. Try to avoid sidewalks at all costs.

By the way, what do you guys do to cope with the heat? That's my kryptonite for long distance runs. I am wearing a sleeveless dri-fit running shirt designed for marathon and short short so not much can be improved on the apparel front. I am not particularly fast neither, about 7-8 min mile, but somehow I am cooked up really fast.

I usually run at 6:30 after work but the heat is still quite intolerable, I guess I will postpone my runs at least half a hour and see whether it helps.

    Op,

How are your nipples holding up?

But yeah, running 5 days out of the week is great, but definetly listen to your body, if your ankles hurt, give them some time to get right, (1-2 days)

And the nipple question was serious, my first time i ran 9 miles, i got back home and my shit was tore up , I had to start using bandaids when I wore shirts
