Interesting point I didn't realize till I saw that article -- if you put your 360 on its side, you're covering up those vents, so wonder how important it is to keep vertical...

Not important at all. There's no vents on the left/bottom. They may make some silly design choices but they're not that retarded.

Had this one a year and a half with no issues so far though, although I've used it a ton less than my previous ones. The only one that wasn't well ventilated was the first, otherwise I take good care of em. If it's gonna happen it's gonna happen, there's not a whole lot you can do to stop it.

My first one would RRoD and I'd put it in the freezer for like and hour and it'd make it another 2-4 days depending on how long I played. I think that last for about 4 months until it finally shit the bed.

yeah mostly isn't users fault, it was the hardware. i got pretty lucky with my xbox 360 too, but then there are people that play it a hell of a lot which aren't so lucky, the chief editor at kotaku is on his 10th xbox 360, and his second wii.

We're on our second Xbox and second PS3. The PS3 died first, the 360 went the week before its warranty expired (considerate of it) - unreadable disc error though not RROD. The Wii's still going strong. Sony had the better repair/exchange system from the experience we had of them - shipped an exchange console out by courier and did a straight swap of it rather than Microsoft's having to send the 360 off to Germany for a month's holiday.

I really fucking hate these consoles that run so stupidly hot you can't keep them in the cabinet you have for putting all these electronics in - I may like games and stuff but I don't want my entire living room to be a shrine to whatever spiky/curvy/if we design it completely ridiculously they won't be able to buy and fit in any of our competitor's consoles guys design they're playing with this week.

Love their solutions to the design issues though - a sticker and changing the lights of doom - just totally what I was expecting when I saw the thread title tbh.

I don't think the disc thing is that big of an issue, unless the slightest tap completely fucks the disc up. Most, if not ALL consoles shouldn't be moved while in operation, starting back with the PS2. Laser scratches/burns are the worst fucking thing ever.

It's shitty design and people need to stop defending it. The other consoles in this generation don't suffer from this issue. With a redesigned console, Microsoft should have corrected it, but they chose not to.

So what you're saying is that they're using the same procedure Sony did last gen with PS2s? I think it's hilarious that Sony and Microsoft are in switched places this time around with the quality of their HW.

bought my first one in 2006, it died in 09, but just barely in the RRoD extended warranty or something like that so it got replaced

I don't think it's really comparable.

I never understood how a 360 could have such an awful rate of failure and still maintain such good sales figures. That's a nightmare from a marketing standpoint and yet they don't really seem to be affected for some reason. I don't like calling people out for being fanboys that will buy up anything that says xbox on it but your odds at winning at Russian roulette are better than having a 360 that won't die and yet people still defend it tooth and nail.

Just traded in a few controllers, an old headset, an old 20GB drive, an old Memory Card and a couple games for just over 100 towards a reserve on the4 next shipment. With my Console trade in and my 120GB drive I will pay maybe $50 if I decide to trade in a couple more games.

Worth it to me. I am on my 3rd 360, all repaired (1st one) or replaced (2nd one) for free. I think my first console lasted ALMOST 2 years, the second for about a year. Figure I will head this 3rd console off and get rid of it before it dies.
