I mentioned the intercoolers because they do damage the console. They void your warranty immediately the moment you plug it in. I happen to have access to both consoles, and I've physically watched a launch 60 gig ps3 that's been better taken care of than my xbox crash and overheat causing a YLOD in a better space than my Xbox.
The majority of Xbox overheating problems are either attributed to poor ventilation/positioning/cleaning. A few are due to manufacturing errors such as poor solder/thermal paste/mating of heatsink to GPU, or even improperly seated GPU. Even then the internals for almost all modern micro-processing chips are rated to 100+ ºC before failure.
I regularly run my 8800GTM in my macbook pro (which by the way, is notorious for heat problems) at 90-100 ºC under load. When those chips are made, they're made to operate at their advertised speed and efficiency in the worst possible scenario, and run better in average and perfect conditions.
In your case you got a shittly manufactured xbox, and should have immediately sent it back under the warranty period, and gotten a new box, end of story.
