Some series, escaping your roots can be good and bad depending on the person... opinions right? Take Megaman Legends, While I would gladly give my legs to get a Serious installation of the series, or the revival of it altogether, Most Megaman fans that liked the 2D style hate the game.
Played a friend copy, I notice that the game has its own charm, still has the same general concept of combat, a lot of the same fun dialogue... A good amount of places to explore, decent story... But it just feels a little watered down. I Know its because I wanted it to be Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, and what i got was New Super Paper Mario Brothers in 3D.
I think Draylo has a point though, When a game bases itself around being a fun Mario game with a heaping helping of RPG, then starts to liquidate the RPG Assets for Touch-Screen gimmicks, I don't think its taking the right path in "breaking free from its roots", and will cause this rift you see here now, Those who 'accept' the change, and those who dislike it.
The game could have incorporated the Sticker Element
and kept Leveling up/Partners/Exp/etc and still been a fun enjoyable game both old and new can enjoy.
Games Okay, I'd say good fun and most will probably enjoy it for what it is. It Just could have been a lot better, and more appealing to a wider amount of Old Paper Mario fans, If it had kept a little more of what some Paper Mario fans enjoyed... the RPG Elements it incorporated. Its still a (3d) Mario game with Story, fun characters, and good old childish humor, Which is great in its own regard! --- Just wish It would have at least kept Partners, They were fun and sometimes the center of the best conversations and story bits.
