Ditto that when I start seeing a software line-up I'm interested in. Took DS forever to start getting decent titles, and I'm expecting the same with this. Makes owning both a 3DS/PSV viable for me now.

Still probably going to wait for a hardware revision though as the battery life still concerns me. Might have a better screen also if the prior Nintendo handheld iterations were anything to go by.

At least with Nintendo the 3DS games we know are going to be good and fun. With the Vita i've no idea if any of those random 3rd party titles are going to be good, so its a pretty hard investment. Also this is pretty funny, i knew Nintendo was going to price drop the 3DS to compete with Sony since it was pretty obviously overpriced from the beginning. Sony however shot themselves in the foot with their price just to survive; now they're gonna squirm hard. lolsony.

I'll definitely pick one of these up now, probably after their fall lineup comes out.

You can't tell if Uncharted is going to be good.

    Okay.

It was pretty much the price and launch lineup that held the 3DS back. Assuming the next Pokemon is on 3DS they will sell like hotcakes just like usual.

I'm smoking from the 'I had a GBA and already own those games as they reflect the very best of what was available from Nintendo on that system' bowl.

The following bears posting, since it at minimum exposes the desperation behind this rushed-out release:

    - Nintendo is confirming that they will sell NES VC games on the eShop for 3DS. But they will not be released on Sept 1st.

    - Instead, on Sept 1st they will be pushing out "early bird editions" of the free NES games for those who bought and registered their systems before the price drop. Only these systems will be able to download and play these NES games at that time.

    - These versions sound like beta emulated versions. There will be no digital manuals included, and while you can switch the controls from player 1 to player 2 for certain games which allow for such play, there will be no cross system multiplayer supported at all.

    - Eventually at a later date, complete versions will be released for actual sale on the eShop. When this happens, those with the "early bird editions" will be able to update to the full versions for free.

    - For the GBA VC games, it gets even weirder. While there is no release date for those other than within 2011, Nintendo is outright saying that they currently have NO plans to ever sell such games on the eShop. This is something specially for early adopters as a reward, and are considered "not for sale" releases.
So, enjoy your $70 worth of not-for-sale GBA games on the 3DS, you lucky, lucky early adopters.

I've never owned a DS before, so for me it was worth it. I don't own any consoles either, so. I got the most current DS and a flashcart to play all the past games for free, and all the new 3DS games (not for free). I don't think I was a ripped off at all, nor do I feel like a sheep.

The upgraded graphical and processing power from the DS to 3DS makes the 170 price worth it alone, they just emphasized the 3D part of it too much when at this point people are disinterested in 3D (thanks Hollywood), coupled with the bad launch lineup and that's where we are today.

So unless you're willing to possibly wait a few years, I'd hop on board pretty quickly.

I feel like nintendo is doing now what sony did years ago with the ps3; they're trying to ride their name and previous success and failed to follow through on what made their previous hardware so successful.

Nintendo's big problem is that Apple came after their market and fucking slammed them, so now that they're making gestures to core gamers (the same core gamers they completely abandoned and shat on) with this rushed out 'oh hey remember all these nostalgic games that made you love us PLEASE PLEASE COME BACK AND BUY OUR NEW SHIT PLEASE' early adopter bandaid. Sony's biggest enemy was its own ego. Riiiiiidge Racerrr! The screen is better, shut up. And who can forget "Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong."

PSP owners (Japanese ones, anyway) eventually came back for the super-rich library of RPGs on the system. Nintendo has a lot to learn from that.

Yup, I was wrong. High pricepoint combined with what was an obviously rushed release (No 1st party games at release and the only 1st party game released as of yet is a remake? Bah!) really bungled the release for Nintendo. Glad to see they're lowering the price to a more reasonable level.

I havent owned a DS for awhile, so I have a lot of shit I missed out on. I broke my Original phat DS in like... 2007, that's why I want a 3DS, same with Vita... I broke my Release day PSP by fucking around with the CFWs and permanently bricked it... brought it back to life temporarily with the Magic Stick/Battery bullshit... but it's dead now.

    Anyway.

The 3DS just had a system update on the 25th. If you install it, it states:

IMPORTANT: After the Nintendo 3DS system is updated, any existing or future unauthorized technical modification of the hardware or software of your Nintendo 3DS system, or the use of an unauthorized device in connection with your system, may render the system permanently unplayable. Content deriving from the unauthorized modification of the hardware or software of your Nintendo 3DS system may be removed. Failure to accept the update may render games unplayable.
Anyone update and use their flashcart since then? Wonder how much of this is scare tactics or will have actual follow-through.

That warning has been in effect since the 3DS launched. Remember when Sony was sure that constantly updating the PSP firmware would deter piracy?

That warning is brand new. The old warning was:

"This product contains technical protection measures. Any unauthorised technical modification to your Nintendo 3DS system or the use of an unauthorised device with your system may render this game and/or your system unplayable."
They made it scarier, I guess.

I guess it's more accurate to say that they've always threatened to remote-brick your 3DS, just not as explicitly as now.

The 3DS hardware isn't a rushed bandaid, the graphics are much better than the best DS game and it can even do things the PS2 couldn't.

They definitely rushed the release date though, and even at 170$ I bet Nintendo still makes a profit off every one sold, unlike the PS3 where they were losing ~$600 per console early on.
