Honestly, aside from its looks, this is pretty awesome . Still need a 3ds for phoenix wright and pokemans, etc; don't care about 3d, and battery life I'm assuming should be a good deal longer.

Though if it doesn't fold/close, will be a bitch to transport/keep scratches off the screen

The fact that it doesn't close makes it practically worthless. Other than that, holy shit would buy if I didn't already have a 3ds.

Seriously, one of the worst handheld designs I've seen in a long time.

Do they have something against making both screens the same size? I understand the touch screen is more $/cm, but come on.

Looks more comfortable for my big palms than the normal 3DS, with its edged shoulders buttons, and d-pad lower than the earth.

After my initial laugh, first thing that came to mind was "This'll sure make the market confusion between DS/3DS even worse". With that design though, it better have a great battery life since there's more real-estate (re: no clamshell) to slap a battery in, and no 3-D screen.

Not sure how it'd handle a circle pad pro designed for it with that shape though.

[EDIT] Oh jeez, it's mono also. Hope it's at least a loud little speaker, since even the two on my XL are pretty quiet.

This is exactly what I've wanted, a cheaper version without the 3D... but why on earth would they make it not fold. There are plenty of ds/3ds games I want to play though. If these things go on sale under $100 (black friday?) I might have to get one.

The idea is great, but the execution.. That said, Kotaku's hands on impression makes it sound like it's not that bad to use as the images suggest..

There's likely a different means of engaging the sleep-mode function. Nintendo wouldn't want to ditch Streetpassing on this model.

I really only think people view the design as weird since so many are used to the "elongated screen" design like the PSP and the Clamshell design like the DS. I'm willing to give the design a pass since it seems intended for a younger age bracket anyways.

That aside, I don't really know what to think about this in terms of industry outlook. Is Nintendo planning to abandon the 3D with whatever it decides to do next? Is a stripped down Wii U in the works?

This will obviously make them money, even without launching next to Pokemon, and if that's all Nintendo was really after (think that micro GBA released like 6 after the DS) then this is great. But I just see a lot of issues with development now ignoring 3D completely because its "no longer a necessity" for them to get their product on a Nintendo handheld.

Without the 3D. I'd be turning the slider down to it's lowest setting anyways. If they can pump out a 3DS XL without the 3D for 150, i'd buy it.

I think they said it has a slider that will work to put it into standby or w/e.

I think in a lot of ways, the 3DS was a half-baked 3d option. Yes it could display 3d images, but no games actually required it. And the fact that it had an option where you could turn off the 3d, kinda makes it sound like Nintendo realized fairly early that the 3d aspect wouldn't be a selling point. Maybe you guys will disagree, but the 3d just felt like a gimmick that was thrown onto a more powerful DS.

If it makes you feel any better, 3DS XL's 3d slider clicks into an off position, unlike normal 3DS where it just slides freely. No stupid green '3d' LED also on the XL.
