Cruor isn't hard to come by but buying them is mindnumbing and awful and you get no reward for doing so. I open about 70% of my chests by guessing and 100% of my gold chests by guessing. As someone else mentioned, only key when you have two failures, or have like 5 chests up and are lazy.

By some quick and lazy math, you have a greater than 50% chance to get two failures before you open a 6-correct blue chest even if you assume that the first number is a 90% gimme. They eat up keys if you care about opening them consistently, period.

That's without even considering the red chests, which as far as I can tell are specifically programmed to be more difficult than they should be to open.

That might be realistic if you were guessing completely at random, but literally over 99% of guesses have a better than 50% chance of being correct, and over half of them have a better than 75% chance.

Realistically I'd say I need to key maybe 1 in 5 important chests.

Your math is way off, if you have a 75% chance on every guess, you have less than a 50% chance of getting 6 correct before you get 2 incorrect.

I didn't bother with the math, I'm saying from experience I generally need to key 1 in 5.

Just looking at it logically, though, if you have a 75% chance on each guess, you'd get about 6 out of 8...

Exactly, but the problem lies in the fact that there's 28 ways for those 6 successes and 2 failures to be laid out. Of those 28 ways, exactly 7 end with a failure, meaning that you got 6 success BEFORE 2 failures. The other 21, or 75% of that end with a success meaning you got 2 failures BEFORE 6 successes.

But don't worry, but your logic, the more failures that are allowed before it fully fails, the harder it becomes because if it's 6 and 6, suddenly your precious ratio is at 50% instead of 75. You're looking at it backwards.

As a rule of thumb, I only key right away if it's Gold Light or a TE, especially TE.

I just wish they'd at least add an option to buy more than one key at a time, it's annoying as hell (not to mention takes up valuable time) buying them individually.

Qutrubs give ruby light (and drop a quest item and tons of Forbidden Keys,) but they're not terribly fun or efficient to XP off of.

    I especially like it when the chests go "20" > Turn dial up > "12" > Turn dial up > "3" > Turn dial up > "81" > Turn dial down > "90".

    Shit makes for epic "fuuuuuuuuuuuuu".

I've had a 98 where I turned down and it came up 99. That's when I said, "I have over 100k Cruor, I'll just buy and bank a few stacks of keys every time I finish a party with more than 120 minutes on my timer." Yeah, it's sluggish and irritating, but I'll swear the chests are coded so that things which should be extremely low probability are somehow more likely to occur. I'm ok with guessing wrong on a 64, not so much when it's 7.

Really don't know how you guys are popping chests without pulling your hair out, though. Only thing I can think of that doesn't have some kind of AoE to screw with you are Crapaudy, yes? And, even then, there's Bard songs and Curagas and Divine Waltzes and similar. If you can cope with it, my hat's off to you. I don't open chests as a rule, anyhow, I'm more often engaged in more demanding activities like staring at a wall wondering if I should start singing Warding Round and Herb Pastorale to stay awake and screw with my party.

Ya know, the odds aren't necessarily what you'd expect from a standard number distribution. Logic dictates normally that if a blue chest shows a 98 then 97 numbers exist below and only 1 above, thus making your odds of being incorrect 1/98 BUT we have this fun little item:

Ivory Abyssite of Acumen - Bestows the bearer with knowledge of Abyssean treasure casket locks.

Which obviously skews those ratios. Now, I admit the BASE chance without an abyssite is likely exactly what we'd expect, but perhaps its not. Then later on, mixing the abyssite into the equation and well. Damned if we'll have any ides on "the odds of getting two failures on a successful open".

You only get Lunar Abyssite for the first boss you kill. On the second and third you get different rewards.

I use keys only on TEs, Cruor, and XP if there are too many on the ground or I'm at 2 failures.

As was mentioned above, I get pretty pissed after it goes from 4 to 3 and makes me fail a chest on the last guess (seems like a reasonable risk, right?). After a few of those, I don't even bother guessing anymore. Shit is annoying.

However, I don't have much of a problem on gold or red chests. Never failed a red, and only a couple golds (useless temp items anyway).

We don't have any solid evidence of what that Abyssite does yet, do we? I think it would more likely give you an additional failure chance or lower the number of successful guesses needed, rather than altering the distribution of the random number generator.

So like, has anybody actually figured out how atmas work? Can you change it once you have it? Do they only work in abyssea? Wat

    Scroll up.

Finish one zone's "boss" quest = Receive "Lunar Abyssite" key item.
Pay 100 Cruor = Receive a status enhancement based one Atma of your choice.
It wears when you leave Abyssea.

That's about all there is to say about it.

You can infuse one at a time inside abyssea, can't stack them.

I am not sure how you guys are having such terrible luck but Blue and Red chests really are very easy. For Red chests it seems like there is a set way that they want you to pick the ups and downs and if you do it the right way you are guaranteed to open it. Shit, half the time I can get red chests in 1-2 attempts and almost 90% of the time I get them on the 2nd to last attempt.

With Blue chests you literally guess as many times as you can before either you fail twice or it opens. If it is a cruor chest or exp chest I am willing to risk a seemingly easy guess like if you have something <85 or >15. TE's and Gold/Ebon I am not really willing to risk and will always key at 2 failures unless the number is either 1 or 99.

Really want to farm key items for my ls so amber light would probably make it a lot easier as opposed to waiting 3 billion red chests to get enough amber light to get even a handful of small gold chests and like 1 giant gold chest the whole damn run.

However both giant chests my ls has ever gotten contained a key item, (adamantoise shell and lux. mane) and popped within the first half hour. Nothing other than that.

Do we even know if amber light increases giant chess rate or just the little guys, or are we just assuming that because they're both gold?
Well, I wish I had some data for you but my LS's planned farming session ended up taking place in LTP instead of Tahrongi. We're doing LTP again tonight, but I will try to find new mobs to kill that follow the idea below:

In looking at the small number of enemy types that are -proven- to give amber light (only Thalassinions and Crapaudys), they have something in common: killing them serves no other purpose; ie, killing Thalassinions isn't necessary to pop Chukwa nor farm a pop item and killing Crapaudys is similar in that there's no lottery NM, nor do they drop a pop item. There are other mob families around that do not apparently serve any other purpose, for instance, Vermes Carnium (baby sandworms), Nematocera (gnats), Nauls (baby Fafs), and Ceoinaeg (Spirits). They also happen to be bitch mobs too, which imo contributes to the theory that they drop amber light.

Either way, we'll be trying some different mob families tonight in LTP to see if my idea is potentially sound, so I will report.

    *edit*

To go a little further on this, it looks like some mob families in LTP that are "useless" to kill are; Irate Sheep, Rock Grinder, and Pasture Funguar .. we'll try those.
