Id be more inclined to think its more along the lines of, the higher the level the mob is the better and more chests it drops.
Or even simpler, the higher the con of the mob the better chests you get and more of them.

I just finished a shout farming run with 16-18 people, ~33k xp + ~7.5k cruor in the end. Most people entered with 3 stones (90min), we were inside for about 2.5h. Our openers were totally new/almost new to Abyssea (I doubt they had -any- key items prior to entering). So I'd say getting extenders is totally random. We were getting extenders from Blue chests. From what I recall, extenders started showing up past 60min mark. We also got about 3 forbidden keys during the run, I think.
We weren't doing anything special, just kiling mobs merit style, trying to focus on small ones for more cruor. That's about it all.
The longer we were there, the more xp and the more chests dropped. Also the amount of cruor/xp went up as well. They all were 1k Cruor chests or 1000-1250xp chests. The time extensions seemed to drop once we got under 30min remaining but not when we already had more than 30min. I think I got the 30min warning like 15 times.
I think alot of it was luck, but once you get past that threshold the chests come like candy. I'd not seen a time chest the other times I'd gone in but this was the most we'd killed in such a short time.
Sounds good, Im forming up a full alliance up people to try this out for ourselves, what mobs did you guys target, mandies?
I can't find the maps of where monsters are in this thread so I think our group will go after birds.
Thanks for the info, I'll try and SS if we do get time extension to verify if it happens.
So more or less time extensions are a crapp shoot, seems more like a bonus if you ARE doing nothing but farming mobs, or fighting groups for pop items to pop an NM. It won't be like dynamis where you know where they extension is, so if you're going to mostly farm NM's I wouldn't bother designing your schedule around the possibility of an extension.
Still, the fact that there are those little bonuses is pretty nice. 10 extra minutes of Cruor farming or tier 1 NM popping is very helpful.
I wasn't a chest opener (we designated 2 people to do them), but no one mentioned their having any special abyssite. I'll try to get more info when they are online later. We're doing another 90min run in Konschtat tonight.
They didn't have any abyssites.
However, the time ext chests appeared to play a more unfair game with the openers.
Edit: Unless one of these persons is lying to everyone and saying 'I don't have a key item' but really does... The group wasn't made with the top players. The group didn't start out great either, a lot of people wandering around trying to check out the zone rather than focus on getting to the camp. We even had someone only enter for 30 mins and then dropped out. So when we saw the first time extension, it caused an uproar with the group.
I wish I had SS'd the time extensions. I didn't expect what happened and I didn't think we'd be the first to report it.
To try and clarify a few things on the time extensions.
Zero key items. I was opening just about every chest until they started dropping like crazy and as far as I know no one else had any key items either. I believe for most of the people it was their first time going in with 3 stones even.
For anyone trying to look through the dats or anything the text associated with the extensions are something along the lines of "You sense a familiar stone inside the chest" and "Your visitant status has been extended by 10 minutes."
Something like that at least, I didn't really memorize them exactly.
You're not likely to see these chests unless you're actively speed killing like we were. If people are focusing on NMs and killing only a few regular mobs for pops or roaming around to different mobs their likeliness of finding a chest is probably close to nil.
As a single family of mobs gets stronger and stronger you end up with more chest drops and it seems only then do the odds of finding a time extension chest fall in your favor purely by sake of numbers.
Then again I'm wondering if the chance of an extension is somehow based on the time you have remaining in the zone based on the party leader or perhaps whoever getsthe kill shot. We almost always seemed to get the chests within the 20-30min range I believe. At one point we had three time extension chests up at the same time.
The chests were rare, but by far not the rarest. I would say the gold/item chests were far rarer than the time extension chests.
EDIT: As an important side note. The extensions were always inside blue chests that required 6 correct guesses. They seem to be the highest difficulty tier for the blue boxes which can also give 1000cruor, 1250exp, intense level light and full temp item restocks to everyone in the alliance. It's likely that the extensions could be a part of this highest tier of rewards so if you are on a lower box tier you're likely not to see them.
we didn't get any time extensions
settings up another alliance to try again
I did notice after 3 hours in we only got the highest tier chests as well. At least until the very end when we started to get random low chests.
I wonder if that's partially because we were bringing in people who weren't there from the start and thusly they started to affect the chests.
Who knows, no one has any solid proof and since this was purely accident, we don't know what formula caused this.
I'm placing my faith in 'the longer you're there, the better the rewards.' Which would explain why there's a time restriction on staying there. I'd go out of my way to get the other key items so that way when you do enter for exping, that you'll have the bonuses.
With what I said in mind, it might be beneficial to have people with Forgotten keys to straight open the time chests. Because they can be fucking hard.
Yeah the cruor price for a key is lame, but when you're opening chests that are spitting 1000 cruor all the time, it'd be worth carrying a key to open a time chest.
I don´t think it been asked yet but what ligth did you receive when killing mobs?
My team been killing frogs in la thiene and we get ruby and the chest we get are always red wiht more light inside rarely anything beside that.
Just spent half an hour burning birds, got up to 100ish exp/kill with full alliance near end of half hour, were getting chests every 2~3 kills, often had 2 on the go at a time.
Not a single stone chest at all. Might try again tonight.
However did get one chest for 1K exp
Ok my chest opener idea was dumb, didn't realize you could see what kind of chest it was
Just started a 2nd run, chest drop rate sucky so far![]()
I can comfirm time extention chests bonus IS NOT granted to dead people lol. We were about to try Minhacao, but someone ended up aggroing it while we were clearing a few lesser mini-sandworms. A SAM and I (RNG) pulled Minhacao away from the main pt, and died a bit far, in the meantime a regular mob droped a chest blue, which was opened before we were raised, everyone in the group got time extention except the SAM and I.
P.S. I've done La Thiene x3 with 1:30 time and never seen a time chest there, granted we didn't grind any mobs or even attempt to exp, but neither did we in Tahrongi.
If you're up to 1000exp from a chest you're probbaly one tier short of the top tier chests.
If it is only top tier chests that can be time chests you're looking for 6 correct guess chests. These chests give "princely" cruor, "intense" light and... I can't remember the descriptor used for the exp chests.
The key seems to be killing as many mobs as possible as fast as possible to work your way up to that top tier.
Don't know how fast you were killing but we had multiple pullers, I think at least a Brd Thf and Blm pulling at times leaving us with up to 3 mobs in the "camp" at times, not counting recent spawns. We started off killing multiple mobs at once and as they got their toughest moved onto fighting one at a time while the others were slept.
Just got done doing 2 hours in canyon, we got 2 TE chests in that time, they didn't appear at all until we were close to the hour 30 mark, we got a chest with 1000 EXP, 1000 Cruor and then 1 with 1250 exp.

Edit: Chests were always blue, and when you peeked inside it said there was a stone fragment, on the 2 we got both were the same.
Random query, but did you guys getting the time extensions and/or lots of chests have any kind of TH in your group? Could be a long shot that TH could help, but who knows.
In a more general sense, I'm kind of reminded of XII and monster kill chains. Stick to a particular family and their rewards eventually build. Groups hopping to different mob packs probably won't ever see this behavior due to not meeting potential tiers.
Either way, gonna go turn in some stones to build up my time. Will have at least 180m to play with, possibly another 90m+ depending on how Joa stores. Haven't been to Abyssea since last Friday, I think.
