Read through all the topic before going in with my ls.

We planned on going all melee dot killshot for pearlescent light, then when we'll have enough drops we'd go azure (magic kills), then when xp/cruot chest are capped => ruby light with ws kills.

We went on mandy in tahrongi.

We first noticed all dot melee killshot does NOT grant light, whereas ALL magic kills gives azure, weird.

Still the plan went pretty good, thank you bg for all those posts xD

At around ~30 pearlescent we went for magic kills, until time chest dropped, then we went for ws kills but we had ZERO ruby light...

Gekko's Flying everywhere, some penta, guillotine and all shit, and we didn't have a single ruby light all night, we ended up staying 5h30 in tahrongi, doing a bunch of exp, we raised our ruby light through a few red chests and ended up capping xp at 390/mob, lack of ruby light prevented us to go higher.

So still i'm asking myself a few questions, how many kills is required to cap each light ? was 30 kills (with light) enough ? and how come we didn't get a single ruby light off a kill ><

(Still that was an amazing run and yelded a ton of xp xD)

If your claiming mandies give ruby light there's alot of evidence that counters that. Some mobs simply dont give certain lights or does not have a 100% proc rate.

I did Pachypodiums the other night and I don't recall getting a single Ruby and I'm confident the idiots I went with were WS-killing even when they were told not to.

It had just been suggested, with some supporting responses, that each mob has a color of light that's not obtainable from them. Pachypodiums appear to lack Ruby light. It was also noted that it was impossible to get Amber light from Shadow Lizards.

I think a majority of the mobs people spend a lot of time on, namely Geiers and Crapaudies, just lack Amber light. No one really cares about Amber at the moment, so it's OK. It's not quite horrible to lack Ruby either.

edit: way to edited the entirety of your post 10 minutes after I replied... you were claiming that people saying they got pearlescent from WSs was evidence that different mobs give lights in different ways.

Um, the lights are all the same on ANY mob as the killshot.

Ruby is always WS light, and pearl is always melee kill. Sometime lag or blinking out of equipment can cause confusion.

SE already confirmed themself which lights drops from which killshot and what each light does. The playerbase confirmed that these lights can all stack and cap out at 15 each. In other words, when you get 15 feeble amber lights, it is capped and you can do another color.

Amber light makes gold chest drop and ppl rarely do amber light so they rarely get the gold chest. If you want to see nice drops like star sapphire and t3 key items in the gold chest, then you need to start spamming magic weaponskills (amber light) as your killshot.

I only seen our BST get amber lights and I think atonement makes amber light as well from PLD.

I took your next post into consideration that a stray melee atk was producing the paerlescent. Then I just thought about it for a sec and realized that all KS are consistant but light is omited per mob.

Now I'm trying to determine if this is per mob or per zone.

What is with all the miscommunication?!

I know and advocate that all lights are obtained in the same manner in all zones and on all mobs.

However, I am acknowledging that some mobs might just straight up not give a light whatsoever. A lot of people are reporting not being able to get Ruby from Pachypodiums. I watched a bunch get killed with WS with some shit group I went in with the other night and we didn't get one Ruby.

I can verify if this is true, it's by specific mob family, not by zone, as I have killed Thalassinons with Stringing Pummel and received Ruby light.

If every mob lacks a light, then Crapaudies most definitely lack Amber as they had plenty of the other 3.

I feel like there might be some truth to the limited chests theory.
I was chestpopper for an exp run yesterday and all was going rather well.. we did get to a point when chests started dropping like every mob but then suddenly there were none for like 7-8 mobs... then one or two again, then none for a while.. And since we were trying to force blue chests for time we were mostly doing magic kills and saw no chests..

I think there were about 160+ people in the zone at the time, so im not sure how the numbers skew..

Also, with regards to blue chests, I'm quite certain there are people who just flat out ignore recovery chests, which means that the number of idle chests would be rather high..

If in theory there are 160 people. thats like 8-9 alliances. If each holds 1 2hr chest idle, thats 9 chests already popped, and if there are 12 chests per color, that only gives all the alliances 3 chests to play with, and it takes a while to open each chest.

but we don't know how chests are assigned so its a big guess..

..as for SMN. If you're a chest opener, don't be SMN - it severely limits the potential of what you can do.. other than well, throwing out Zantetsukens everytime u open a 2hr chest.. which is kinda fun.

No they didn't. Stop spreading misinformation you fool.

As for ruby/mandies debate, I would imagine from a development point of view it would be a good idea to be able to get any light from any PT combination, so it may very well be that whilst most monsters give ruby=ws azure=magic pearl=melee hit, some monsters (possibly ones native to that area? E.g. mandies=tahrongi, lizards=konschtat, etc...) may not follow it. After all, what reason would there be to kill the more troublesome monsters otherwise? (e.g. Corses)

    Edit:
If in theory there are 160 people. thats like 8-9 alliances. If each holds 1 2hr chest idle, thats 9 chests already popped, and if there are 12 chests per color, that only gives all the alliances 3 chests to play with, and it takes a while to open each chest.

Well actually we do. Abyssea is just like any other zone, so each 'object' needs to be bound to a name given on the Mob List files:
    ROM/26/69.dat - La Theine
    ROM/25/110.dat - Tahrongi
    ROM/25/80.dat - Konschtat

If you look in say the La Theine one, you'll see there are 4 Sturdy Pyxis between Ovni and Akash (these are Mimics). Below that are a total of 48 'real' Sturdy Pyxis, meaning that at any one time, there can only be 48 chests up at once. Using your example, that would mean there would need to roughly be 5-6 chests up at any one time for every alliance before problems (such as your drought of chests) can occur. How often does that happen? Well, figuring that out would be the fun part. I'm not entirely sure if the monster list is bound to models, in which case the number of 'free' blue chests will be even smaller, but if it was.. then there would be 4 chest types (gold, red, blue, big gold?) which would result in only 12 blue chests, meaning people barely need even 1-2 blue chests up (in your example) before a drought occurs. From experience in Abyssea, near the later half of a lot of runs there tends to be 2-3 blue chests up almost constantly, so I do think that the number of people in a zone can affect the productivity of a run.

This was very fun, puller would come back with a mob, have it get zantetsu'd and be all "WTF where did it go?!" for like half a second.

For the 48 chests in dats, could they be the random blue chests you find just chilling in the zone? There really is some chests that just appear in different areas and repop every once in a while. I've personally seen a blue chest not far from the excavating area in tahrongi, and another not far from the jagged cliff in la thiene near conflux 7.

Each zone is huge, so maybe theres 48 random ones? Or maybe less but they take up some of the available slots for alliances....

well. i know the 48 NPC chests.. but its not like every dat is tied to a fixed in-game model.
if we take the example of Pandemonium warden, the same dat entry can take on different models, let alone colors.. so the 48 might be flexibly assigned, not just 12 a color

Extract to FFXI directory(the directory with ROM/ROM2/ROM3/ETC in it), go do an exp party, observe numbering. Put an end to this silly argument.

I'd test it myself but I don't have stones and won't be exping until sunday night, the dats will number all caskets from 1-48 so if they're fixed to a color it should be easy to observe.

We were struggling to get ruby light from the mandies last night, I'm not going to say we DIDN'T because to be honest by the end it was 5.30 am and I wasn't exactly giving 100% focus, but I know I was actively sitting on TP to pop mobs off at the end with Sidewinder (at ranged distance therefore no stray melee attacks kicking in from me) to try to force light without much luck. Seems to be a lower rate of ruby if nothing else - but I wasn't parsing and by the end coffee supplies were running low too.

I'll test that out tonight Thorny, unless somebody beats me to it. I'm going to assume you just changed all the names of the chests to Sturdy Pyxis #1, #2, etc., etc.

Also, we're going to be testing out the blue chest abyssite tonight as one of our BLMs is going to have it. I'll let you guys know if we see any of those mysterious 1.5k exp chests. I'm really hoping that it does let you break into a new tier of chests. Yeah, the red chests would allow you to get a higher light, but what i'm more concerned with is what the gold chests would put out. Possibly empyrean items? We can hope.

I have also done runs where mandies refused to give ruby light, but we still had capped red chests drop.

It might explain why mandies have taken me so long to build up max exp on, though I haven't done a run since pearl has been confirmed to increase chest drop rate.

I've spent at least 30 to 40 hours of total time killing mandies for exp in Abyssea in the last few weeks. Five jobs from 75 to 80, at least 70 merit points, and probably in the neighborhood of 2 million exp earned. I am confident that I have NEVER seen ruby light coming from anything besides a red chest that drops from them! I have ONLY ever seen pearlescent and azure glows come from kill shots on them -- and frequently NO light on kills.

Crapaudies can certainly naturally generate amber light.

You're also incorrect about the 1500 experience cap on chests.

The only fool here is you.

Pearlescent: Melee kill, includes some job abilties like shield bash and blood pact physical.

Azure: Magic damage kill, includes magical from blu, smn, blm, sch, rdm, whm etc. Not DoTs.

    Ruby: Weaponskills killshot. Physical.

    Amber: Magic WS killshot

Golden: Red treasure chest. obtained from treasure chest only.

Silvery: Obtained from treasure chest only

Ebon: Obtained from treasure chests only.

Sometimes lights do not occur when the zone is full and has like 100+ ppl in it. Because the max number of Colored chests is exceeded. It does happen and when it does, you just don't get the light either. Everytime I struggle to get a light after a killshot, I would search the zone and see 100+ ppl there farming on a bunch of different mobs and seeing chests all over their camp on the ground. I never had a problem getting a light from any mob or from mandies when the zone wasn't overcrowded.

They kill corses because they want to kill the corse NM or cause they want some kind of drop from the corse, simple as that. Not all of these mobs were meant to be exped on i'm sure. Either way, big mobs drop a different exp/crour ratio then smaller mobs, that could be another reason ppl would choose a particular mob.

Crapaudies give Amber light. Shadow of Death kills (for example) gave Amber light on Crapaudies last night.

Also, I have seen multiple (many) Ruby lights on Mandies from WS kills.
