    David Jaffe sure knew.

First-print copies of Twisted Metal include TM: Black
Those who purchase a first-edition copy of Twisted Metal will receive a voucher that can be redeemed for a free digital copy of the original Twisted Metal: Black.

News of this thoughtful freebie comes by way of co-director David Jaffe, who gives us a nice reminder about Green Stamps. Yes, this video is worth a watch. The inclusion of Black seems like the right one, based on where Eat Sleep Play is headed with the new Twisted Metal.

Twisted Metal is set to arrive exclusively on the PlayStation 3 later this year, sporting both single player and frantic online multiplayer. However, it appears that the game will require an online pass for accessing online content.

In an interview with TheGamersHub, Twisted Metal QA Lead, Justin Trease, answered “yes”, when asked if Twisted Metal would require an online pass to play online.

This comes as somber news to followers of the game, as Lead Designer and Co-Producer on the game, David Jaffe, has previously said that he didn’t desire the implementation of an online pass:

“I’d actually prefer that we don’t [include PSN Pass], even though it’s probably good business, only because we have such a mountain to climb in terms of gaining people’s good faith, especially in Europe, and really letting people know that this is a title that’s worth getting excited about.”
For those unfamiliar with the concept of an online pass, it works quite simply. If you purchase Twisted Metal new, you’ll find an online pass (in the form of a code) within the box. You can enter this code when initially prompted upon startup of the game. Once entered, you’re set and ready to play.

However, if you find yourself with a used copy of the game, you have two options. Either purchase a digital online pass for $10, or don’t play online at all.

It’s a cutthroat system, but it’s typically a choice of the publisher, not necessarily the developer.

In case you haven't heard, a multiplayer demo of Twisted Metal is coming to a PlayStation 3 near you. Now, thanks to the PlayStation Blogcast, we know the date: January 31st, 2012. As a fan of the series since the first iteration, I can't wait to see what Jaffe and his team have in store for us. I thought Twisted Metal Black was an incredibly fresh take on the franchise and I see a lot of similarities in the upcoming title -- especially with the game's dark undertones and the return of twisted storyline videos.

I know some of you may not be joining in because of the online pass situation, but to me, the free inclusion of Twisted Metal Black is enough to make up for it. Regardless of the quality of the demo, my wife and I will be blowing stuff up come February 14th. Considering Jaffe has stated that this iteration is mostly a multiplayer game, is anyone else excited at the prospect of mingling with fellow carmageddon caballeros?

I'm seriously siked about this game, and just as much for the demo. Anyone gonna be on this? Would like to see how the co-op part of this game works, with certain larger cars working alongside the smaller ones to create what appears to be epic combinations. PSN: bciervo7

Lemme know, when do demos normally hit PSN store, midnight?

Yep, and it's awesome. Takes a little getting use to the controls though.

Reviews seem decent-to-mediocre and are consistent in their complaints. Was annoyed when I found out they ditched all the characters from old games in favor of only three, and from the sound of it, it doesn't seem like it was necessarily for the better. Guess I'll wait a bit and pick this up when it goes for $40 or less.

yeah i remember being pretty bad ass at the old twisted metals and this not being a big issue, on the demo i had a pretty difficult time feeling comfortable with all these controls not something i've felt for a long time. I also feel that just playing the game is pretty difficult something i also haven't felt about a game in a really long time I guess it's going to take some getting used to I haven't played this type of game since vigilante 8 part 2 or was it twisted metal black? I forget which was last

vigilante 8 was awesome in its own right (first one was at least, were there sequels?)

after tm2, the other tms sucked so V8 filled the void

Game is great, but holy shit I am rusty as hell. Hasn't been a damn car combat game worth buying in ages.

Servers are down so they can fix all the expected day 1 crap.

Only annoying thing is cars constantly fucking dogging you with AI. I know that's the point and all, but they ALL go for you. Hit each other a bit so I can go collect power ups!

I will agree with you on that. Vigilante 8 was probably my favorite car-battle type game ever made. I get boners for detailed and completely destroyable environments.

I can't imagine how many hours of my life had been spent completely leveling Las Vegas or destroying every damn orange tree orchard and windmill in Anaheim for the hell of it.

Would snatch it up in a heartbeat if they released it on PSN. I loved going apeshit on the ski resort stage and that nevada badlands stage. And come on, seriously, the fucking baddest villian on the villian side drove a fucking Corvette Stingray. God, that game was awesome.

    Aww yeah.

For those who didn't know, there was the original (Vigilante 8), a sequel (Vigilante 8: Second Offense), and then a sort of remake/mash-up of the original for XBL (Vigilante 8 Arcade). Apparently the same developers made pretty much a Star Wars version? Star Wars: Demolition. Hmm~

I remember the Flying Saucer in the original being so broken, lol.
